Book An Annotated Bibliography of North American Doctoral Dissertations on Old Norse Icelandic

Download or read book An Annotated Bibliography of North American Doctoral Dissertations on Old Norse Icelandic written by Kirsten Wolf and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kirsten Wolf's annotated bibliographical survey of doctoral dissertations written at North American institutions of higher learning, and treating topics pertaining to Old Norse-Icelandic language, literature, and culture, provides a new tool for basic research. It also offers insight into trends and tendencies in scholarship within the field of Old Norse-Icelandic in the United States and Canada from the last decades of the nineteenth century, when the first doctoral dissertations in the field appeared, to late 1995. Specifically, it demonstrates a gradual shift from studies in language and style, firmly rooted in Germanic philology, to anthropological studies and literary analyses of individual works or themes. Author, director, and institution indices appear at the end of the volume. To facilitate research, Wolf provides a subject index that includes not only titles of works and proper names but also concepts.

Book First Encounters in French and German Prose Fiction 1830 1883

Download or read book First Encounters in French and German Prose Fiction 1830 1883 written by Sima Kappeler and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First encounters are intense and often decisive moments both in life and literature. This study analyzes nineteenth-century French and German texts by comparing six representative scenes of first encounters and their implications. The close readings reveal how, while dealing with appearance, first encounters inevitably lead to deeper insights. The selected scenes show how the self is affected by the challenging appearance of the encountered other. Crucial psychoanalytic and epistemological issues are raised as well as new perspectives on major French and German texts.

Book Sexual Violence and Rape in the Middle Ages

Download or read book Sexual Violence and Rape in the Middle Ages written by Albrecht Classen and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval historians and literary scholars have not ignored the topic of sexual violence and rape, but the primary focus has regularly rested on English, French, or Italian documents. Here we have the first book-length study that investigates the treatment of sexual crimes in medieval and early modern German and Latin literature, making great efforts to shed light on often ignored scenes and episodes even in some of the ‚classical‘ works such as Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival or the anonymous Nibelungenlied. As this monograph reveals, many times we face situations where we cannot easily determine whether rape has occurred or not. Consequently, we recognize an important discourse in these literary examples concerning the question of how to view and deal with sexual violence, which could also involve men as victims. This critical examination extends toward sixteenth-century jest narratives (Schwänke) where the issue of rape continued to occupy the authors’ minds. Moreover, as numerous side glances to contemporary European literature indicate, the theme of sexual violence was of universal concern and critical importance during the entire premodern era.

Book Victorian Travel Writing and Imperial Violence

Download or read book Victorian Travel Writing and Imperial Violence written by Laura E. Franey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-10-14 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the cultural and political impact of Victorian travelers' descriptions of physical and verbal violence in Africa. Travel narratives provide a rich entry into the shifting meanings of colonialism, as formal imperialism replaced informal control in the Nineteenth century. Offering a wide-ranging approach to travel literature's significance in Victorian life, this book features analysis of physical and verbal violence in major exploration narratives as well as lesser-known volumes and newspaper accounts of expeditions. It also presents new perspectives on Olive Schreiner and Joseph Conrad by linking violence in their fictional travelogues with the rhetoric of humanitarian trusteeship.
