Book The Central Republic in Mexico 1835 1846

Download or read book The Central Republic in Mexico 1835 1846 written by Michael P. Costeloe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the so-called Age of Santa Anna in the history of independent Mexico remains a mystery and no decade is less well understood than the years from 1835 to 1846. In 1834, the ruling elite of middle class hombres de bien concluded that a highly centralised republican government was the only solution to the turmoil and factionalism that had characterised the new nation since its emancipation from Spain in 1821. The central republic was thus set up in 1835, but once again civil strife, economic stagnation, and military coups prevailed until 1846, when a disastrous war with the United States began in which Mexico was to lose half of its national territory. This study explains the course of events and analyses why centralism failed, the issues and personalities involved, and the underlying pressures of economic and social change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its archaeological sites, colonial architecture, pristine beaches, and alluring cities, Mexico has long been an attractive destination for travelers. The tourist industry ranks third in contributions to Mexico’s gross domestic product and provides more than 5 percent of total employment nationwide. Holiday in Mexico takes a broad historical and geographical look at Mexico, covering tourist destinations from Tijuana to Acapulco and the development of tourism from the 1840s to the present day. Scholars in a variety of fields offer a complex and critical view of tourism in Mexico by examining its origins, promoters, and participants. Essays feature research on prototourist American soldiers of the mid-nineteenth century, archaeologists who excavated Teotihuacán, business owners who marketed Carnival in Veracruz during the 1920s, American tourists in Mexico City who promoted goodwill during the Second World War, American retirees who settled San Miguel de Allende, restaurateurs who created an “authentic” cuisine of Central Mexico, indigenous market vendors of Oaxaca who shaped the local tourist identity, Mayan service workers who migrated to work in Cancun hotels, and local officials who vied to develop the next “it” spot in Tijuana and Cabo San Lucas. Including insightful studies on food, labor, art, diplomacy, business, and politics, this collection illuminates the many processes and individuals that constitute the tourism industry. Holiday in Mexico shows tourism to be a complicated set of interactions and outcomes that reveal much about the nature of economic, social, cultural, and environmental change in Greater Mexico over the past two centuries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Squadron Under Commodore Conner: In the War With Mexico, Being a Synopsis of Its Services Containing Admiral Addendum Memoir, of the Landing of Our Army at Vera Cruz in Vera Cruz in 1847 At the time when hostilities commenced between Mexico and the United States, the former had no navy on the high seas, and the latter none fitted to prosecute warfare in the enemy's waters. In consequence of this the war was without any strictly naval conflicts. But the want of proper vessels in the American navy was not generally known, and consequently dissatisfaction was felt at the presumed lack of enterprise of the squadron in the Gulf of Mexico, and a portion of the press did not hesitate to censure the same, together with the commander of that force. Subsequently, however, the government - through the medium of the report of the Secretary of the Navy - announced its total want of proper vessels, and appropriate means in general, for active operations in the Gulf. This placed the case in its true light, and the injustice of the criticism was made evident. While the truth was thus slowly unraveling itself at home, Commodore Conner, in the Gulf, was manfully bearing up against the many combined difficulties there present, and steadily performing the arduous and harassing duties assigned to him. The department, having openly acknowledged the inappropriateness of the means at his command, promised to purchase and dispatch vessels and forces fitted for the special service required, and consequently the commodore laid his plans in expectation of their arrival. Commodore Conner, as before stated, having borne the brunt of difficulties and misfortune, and yet having passed with safety through the most critical period of the war, - in regard to both military and diplomatic action, - it was to be expected that the government which had not only put this officer in such an embarrassed position, but had, moreover, requested him to remain there, when he could have retired with credit, would afford him every facility in its power to achieve the end desired by placing in his hands those proper means which he had designated and which the Navy Department was preparing. Such, I presume, was the intention of the government; but the lapse of time and subsequent circumstances caused a different result.
