Book Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Policy

Download or read book Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Policy written by Maggie Walter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how Indigenous Peoples around the world are demanding greater data sovereignty, and challenging the ways in which governments have historically used Indigenous data to develop policies and programs. In the digital age, governments are increasingly dependent on data and data analytics to inform their policies and decision-making. However, Indigenous Peoples have often been the unwilling targets of policy interventions and have had little say over the collection, use and application of data about them, their lands and cultures. At the heart of Indigenous Peoples’ demands for change are the enduring aspirations of self-determination over their institutions, resources, knowledge and information systems. With contributors from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, North and South America and Europe, this book offers a rich account of the potential for Indigenous data sovereignty to support human flourishing and to protect against the ever-growing threats of data-related risks and harms. Book Comic Art and Feminism in the Baltic Sea Region

Download or read book Comic Art and Feminism in the Baltic Sea Region written by Kristy Beers Fägersten and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection explores how the relationship between comic art and feminism has been shaped by global, transnational, and local trends, curating analyses of multinational comic art that encompass themes of gender, sexuality, power, vulnerability, assault, abuse, taboo, and trauma. The chapters illuminate in turn the defining features of the aesthetics, materiality, and thematic content of their source material – often expressed with humorous undertones of self-reflection or social criticism – as well as recurring strategies of visualising and narrating female experiences. Broadening the research perspective of feminist comics to include national comics cultures peripheral to the cultural centers of Anglo-American, Franco-Belgian, and Japanese comics, the anthology explores how the dominant narrative or history of canonical works can be challenged or deconstructed by local histories of comics and feminism and their transnational connections, and how local histories complement or challenge the current understanding of the relationship between feminism and comic art. This is an essential collection for scholars and students in comics studies, women and gender studies, media studies, and literature.

Download or read book Band Ferromagnetism written by K. Baberschke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating phenomenon ferromagnetism is far from being fully understood, although it surely belongs to the oldest problems of solid state physics. For any investigation it appears recommendable to distinguish between materials whose spontaneous magnetization stems from localized electrons of a partially ?lled atomic shell and those in which it is due to itinerant electrons of a partially ?lled conduction band. In the latter case one speaks of band-ferromagnetism, prototypes of which are the classical ferromagnets Fe, Co, and Ni. The present book is a status report on the remarkable progress that has recently been made towards a microscopic understanding of band-ferromagnetism as an electron c- relation e?ect. The authors of the various chapters of this book “Band-Ferromagnetism: Ground-State and Finite-Temperature Phenomena” participated as selected - perts in the 242nd WE-Heraeus-Seminar (4-6 October 2000) held under almost the same title in Wandlitz near Berlin (Germany). It was the second seminar of this type in Wandlitz. (The ?rst in 1998 dealt with the complementary topic of the physics of local-moment ferromagnets such as Gd). Twenty-six invited spe- ers from ten di?erent countries together with ?fty-?ve further participants, who presented contributions in form of posters, spent three days together discussing in an enthusiastic and fertile manner the hot topics of band-ferromagnetism.

Book Digital Pattern Recognition

Download or read book Digital Pattern Recognition written by K. S. Fu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1976, the original volume has been warmly received. We have decided to put out this updated paperback edition so that the book can be more accessible to students. This paperback edition is essentially the same as the original hardcover volume except for the addition of a new chapter (Chapter 7) which reviews the recent advances in pattern recognition and image processing. Because of the limitations of length, we can only report the highlights and point the readers to the literature. A few typographical errors in the original edition were corrected. We are grateful to the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research for supporting the editing of this book as well as the work described in Chapter 4 and a part of Chapter 7. West Lafayette, Indiana March 1980 K. S. Fu Preface to the First Edition During the past fifteen years there has been a considerable growth of interest in problems of pattern recognition. Contributions to the blossom of this area have come from many disciplines, including statistics, psychology, linguistics, computer science, biology, taxonomy, switching theory, communication theory, control theory, and operations research. Many different approaches have been proposed and a number of books have been published. Most books published so far deal with the decision-theoretic (or statistical) approach or the syntactic (or linguistic) is still far from its maturity, many approach.

Book Regulating Competition

Download or read book Regulating Competition written by Susanna Fellman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cartels, trusts and agreements to reduce competition between firms have existed for centuries, but became particularly prevalent toward the end of the 19th century. In the mid-20th century governments began to use so called ‘cartel registers’ to monitor and regulate their behaviour. This book provides cases studies from more than a dozen countries to examine the emergence, application and eventual decline of this form of regulation. Beginning with a comparison of the attitudes to regulation that led to monitoring, rather than prohibiting cartels, this book examines the international studies on cartels undertaken by the League of Nations before World War II. This is followed by a series of studies on the context of the registers, including the international context of the European Union, and the importance of lobby groups in shaping regulatory outcomes, using Finland as an example. Section two provides a broad international comparison of several countries’ registers, with individual studies on Norway, Australia, Japan, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands. After examining the impact of registration on business behaviour in the insurance industry, this book concludes with an overview of the lessons to be learnt from 20th century efforts to regulate competition. With a foreword by Harm Schroter, this book outlines the rise and fall of a system that allowed nations to tailor their approach to regulating competition to their individual circumstances whilst also responding to the pressures of globalisation that emerged after the Second World War. This book is suitable for those who are interested in and study economic history, international economics and business history.

Book Bridging the Gaps

Download or read book Bridging the Gaps written by Martin Ruhs and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the use of research in public debates and policy-making on immigration and integration? Why are there such large gaps between migration debates and migration realities, and how can they be reduced? Bridging the Gaps: Linking Research to Public Debates and Policy Making on Migration and Integration provides a unique set of testimonies and analyses of these questions by researchers and policy experts who have been deeply involved in attempts to link social science research to public policies. Bridging the Gaps argues that we must go beyond the prevailing focus on the research-policy nexus by considering how the media, public opinion, and other dimensions of public debates can interact with research and policy-processes. The chapters provide theoretical analyses and personal assessments of the successes and failures of past efforts to link research to public debates and policy-making on migration and integration in six different countries - Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States - as well as in European and global governance debates. Contrary to common public perceptions and political demands, Bridging the Gaps argues that all actors contributing to research, public debates, and policy-making should recognize that migration, integration, and related decision-making are highly complex issues, and that there are no quick fixes to what are often enduring policy dilemmas. When the different actors understand and appreciate each other's primary aims and constraints, such common understandings can pave the way for improved policy-making processes and better public policies that deal more effectively with the real challenges of migration and integration.

Download or read book The Inside Text written by R. Harper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-06-27 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SMS or Text is one of the most popular forms of messaging. Yet, despite its immense popularity, SMS has remained unexamined by science. Not only that, but the commercial organisations, who have been forced to offer SMS by a demanding public, have had very little idea why it has been successful. Indeed, they have, until very recently, planned to replace SMS with other messaging services such as MMS. This book is the first to bring together scientific studies into the values that ‘texting’ provides, examining both cultural variation in countries as different as the Philippines and Germany, as well as the differences between SMS and other communications channels like Instant Messaging and the traditional letter. It presents usability and design research which explores how SMS will evolve and what is likely to be the pattern of person-to-person messaging in the future. In short, The Inside Text is a fundamental resource for anyone interested in mobile communications at the start of the 21st Century.

Book Oppressed Pride

Download or read book Oppressed Pride written by Khalid Rashid and published by Khalid Rashid. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honour related violence and oppression is a relatively new phenomenon in Sweden that received political and medial attention in the 1990's. A lot of research has been made since then in order to understand the phenomenon and to improve the interventions against it. Most of the focus have been on women under HRVO, which stands for the majority who falls victim for this crime. This study aims to bring forth more shades of this phenomenon by exploring how professionals identify and give recognition to the needs, vulnerabilities and obstacles for sexual minorities who seeks aid from public services, as they've become targets for patriarchal violence and oppression. This is done by presenting three different vignettes of LGBTQ persons who are exposed to different forms of HRVO during semi-structured interviews. Twelve respondents from three different professional categories were interviewed: social welfare officers, counsellors and housing personnel. The participants in the interviews varied from one up to four simultaneously. The gathered results tells of several important aspects in the work with HRVO cases, among them are: refreshing and enhancing the professional's knowledge, being able to adapt to the client's needs and to grant a safe environment for the client during the ongoing assessment. The results also show difficulties for the professionals, such as facing conflicting legislation, whether HRVO is seen as a patriarchal phenomenon or a cultural relativistic phenomenon and high workload.
