Book excerpt: City of Façades: Archaeology, History, and Urbanism in Velha Goa revisits early modern colonial urbanisms through an archaeological project conducted in 2012 at the Portuguese colonial site of Velha Goa, India. Histories written about the city's growth and decline from 1510 to the current day are unavoidably structured by elite, top-down understandings of social processes, owing principally to the limits of the colonial archives themselves. As a result, quotidian material transformations, essential to urban processes, remain largely unconsidered. The archaeological data explored in this volume allows us to reflect on these transformations and how they shaped colonial life, both during and after Portuguese rule.

It lies on the banks of the Mandovi River estuary in Tiswadi taluka. With a population of 65,000 in the city and approximately 100,000 in the metropolitan area, Panaji is Goa's third largest city after Vasco da Gama and Margao. Panaji means "land that never floods." It has terraced hills, concrete buildings with balconies and red-tiled roofs, churches, and a riverside promenade. There are avenues lined with gulmohar, acacia and other trees. The Baroque Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church is located overlooking the main square known as Praca da Igreja. Pretty villas, cobbled streets and interesting buildings give Panaji a Portuguese ambience. The word Panaji is derived from the words panjani and khali, which mean a boat and a small creek respectively, in Sanskrit. Thus the modern word Panaji is a corrupt form of the old word Panjakhali as inscribed on the copper-plates found, belonging to the rule of Kadamba king Tribhuvanamalla. The official name is Panaji. The Portuguese name was Pangim. The city is called Panjim in English. It has been spelt as Panaji since the 1960s. The city is called ponnje in Konkani. Earlier a small village on the river...

Book The Built Environment through the Prism of the Colonial Periodical Press

Download or read book The Built Environment through the Prism of the Colonial Periodical Press written by Alice Santiago Faria and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Built Environment through the Prism of the Colonial Periodical Press is a venture of the International Group for Studies of Colonial Periodical Press of the Portuguese Empire (IGSCP-PE), who are also interested in comparative studies and conceptual discussions. Through a focus on the understudied role of colonial periodicals in the creation and public discussion of colonial built environments, the present book contributes to a cultural history of the idea of built environment. The studies underscore the role of press in articulating environment imaging and transformations with colonial ideologies, projects and policies, and the fixing, othering and disputing of identities, while still retaining the epochal circulation of ideas. This role is evidenced through discussions of forests, clubs, hotels, barracks, hospitals, houses, verandas and gardens, railways, Catholic churches and Hindu "templescapes", restorations and exhibitions. The book also examines a non-canonical variety of periodicals, such as newspapers, bulletins, women’s magazines, and professional journals. Published within the sphere of Portuguese, Belgium, Italian, British formal and informal Empire, the analysis of these periodicals provides a multilingual, plural and complex comprehension of the discursive creation of modern built environments in colonial ambiances. This volume is indispensable for scholars and students interested in Media Studies, Architectural and Engineering studies, Built Environment studies as well as Colonial and Imperial history.

Book The Portuguese Presence in India

Download or read book The Portuguese Presence in India written by João A. de Menezes and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2020-06-27 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book hails from a Goan emigrant family and was born in British India and has had a rare exposure to British rule in India, to the Portuguese presence in Goa and to independent India, besides having lived in the United States for three years for post-graduate studies in engineering. After Independence, India raised objections to two forms of the Portuguese presence: (1) Portuguese government’s patronage over certain Catholic dioceses which had been evangelized by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century, a dispute which was quickly resolved by July 18, 1969 and (2) the Portuguese political presence in Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, which India claimed on grounds of geography and Portugal claimed on grounds of history and juridical superiority, the absence of any significant desire of the people to merge with India. The author has been privy to a full set of diplomatic exchanges with India, few other countries and within the Portuguese Government, in four volumes published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lisbon, an official de-classification, on Goa and its dependencies, 1947 to 1967, some of which have been extensively used in their complete text for better understanding in the book.

Book Suffering and the Thesis of Purgatory

Download or read book Suffering and the Thesis of Purgatory written by Iveta Cleophas Fernandes and published by Publicious Pty Limited. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings to life the Prophecies of Fatima and unfolds the Book of Revelation in the messages revealed by the Blessed Virgin Mary to the Victim Soul Iveta 'Cleophas' Fernandes. It reveals that great powers are given to the 'adversary' in these times and speaks of the Great Tribulation and of the Birth pangs of the Great Apostasy - the first being the 'diabolic pandemic', the second birth pang being the fall out of a diabolic nature - of which we are at the threshold! This book also contains prophetic messages of the impending Schism of the Catholic Church and of the Persecution that will befall to purify the Church before the promised Era of peace! In revealing the spiritual battle that we are currently engaged in, the messages contained in this book give us a spiritual roadmap for the times ahead and calls for the proclamation of the fifth Marian Dogma: 'Mary, Mediatrix of All Grace, Co-Redemptrix and Advocate'. The first part of this book outlines the profound value of suffering when this suffering is united to the Passion of Our Lord Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Mother of God. The second part reveals precious insights into the realms of Purgatory, of Souls serving Divine Justice and of the process required to attain their Crown of Glory! Readers are advised to exercise spiritual discernment as some of these prophecies and warnings to be fulfilled soon are quite disturbing! Some of their consequences can be mitigated if we choose to pray, offer up our suffering and convert!
