Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meteoric rise of Las Vegas from a remote Mormon outpost to an international entertainment center was never a sure thing. In its first decades, the town languished, but when Nevada legalized casino gambling in 1931, Las Vegas met its destiny. This act—combined with the growing popularity of the automobile, cheap land and electricity, and changing national attitudes toward gambling—led to the fantastic casinos and opulent resorts that became the trademark industry of the city and created the ambiance that has made Las Vegas an icon of pleasure. This volume celebrates the city’s unparalleled growth, examining both the development of its gaming industry and the creation of an urban complex that over two million people proudly call home. Here are the colorful characters who shaped the city as well as the political, business, and civic decisions that influenced its growth. The story extends chronologically from the first Paiute people to the construction of the latest megaresorts, and geographically far beyond the original township to include the several municipalities that make up today’s vast metropolitan Las Vegas area.

Book excerpt: On September 20, 1998, Jose Vigoa, a child of Fidel Castro’s revolution, launched what would be the most audacious and ruthless series of high-profile casino and armored car robberies that Las Vegas had ever seen. In a brazen sixteen-month reign of terror, he and his crew would hit the crème de la crème of Vegas hotels: the MGM, the Desert Inn, the New York—New York, the Mandalay Bay, and the Bellagio. The robberies were well planned and executed, and the police–“the stupids,” as Vigoa contemptuously referred to them–were all but helpless to stop them. But Lt. John Alamshaw, the twenty-three-year veteran in charge of robbery detectives, was not giving up so easily. For him, Vigoa’s rampage was a personal affront. And he would do whatever it took, even risk his badge, to bring Vigoa down.

Book Patriarch

Download or read book Patriarch written by David M. Bickman and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-01-07 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly before his death, Abe Bickman (the "Patriarch") gave his son, David, his modest family archive. This archive comprised: an envelope, postmarked in 1948 and with a return address in Brazil, in which were contained several black & white photographs; several letters from relatives in the Ukraine, written in Yiddish in the 1920s; and a military passport issued by the Czarist Russian government in the very early 1900s. The author had the letters and passport translated and then reconnected with relatives in Brazil. He subsequently went to Brazil and met many of his cousins living there, some of whom helped him to locate, and eventually meet, cousins from Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Israel and the United States. Bickman's research into his father's family history also involved gathering information from public archives in Canada, the United States and Ukraine, where he found his earliest direct paternal ancestor bearing the family surname (then "Bikman"). Bickman discovered that much of his father's family's history is a microcosm of the history of Eastern European Jewry from 1774 to the present and, in this process, learned much more about himself than he ever anticipated.

Book The Peoples Of Las Vegas

Download or read book The Peoples Of Las Vegas written by Jerry L Simich and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2005-03-07 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beneath the glitzy surface of the resorts and the seemingly cookie-cutter suburban sprawl of Las Vegas lies a vibrant and diverse ethnic life. People of varied origins make up the population of nearly two million and yet, until now, little mention of the city has been made in studies and discussion of ethnicity or immigration. The Peoples of Las Vegas: One City, Many Faces fills this void by presenting the work of seventeen scholars of history, political science, sociology, anthropology, law, urban studies, cultural studies, literature, social work, and ethnic studies to provide profiles of thirteen of the city’s many ethnic groups. The book’s introduction and opening chapters explore the historical and demographic context of these groups, as well as analyze the economic and social conditions that make Las Vegas so attractive to recent immigrants. Each group is the subject of the subsequent chapters, outlining migration motivations and processes, economic pursuits, cultural institutions and means of transmitting culture, involvement in the broader community, ties to homelands, and recent demographic trends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been reading some excellent writings by you. Consider sending me such some pieces in Hindi for the Vishva-Vivek. Regards, BhuDev (On #14) Ive wanted to say this for a long time. Since you write so well, I am surprised that you dont enter the Toastmasters International Speech Contest more often and win!! Maybe I could help you convert some of your writings into inspirational speeches! Let me know if interested! Narayanan (On #19) It seems you have knack of praising everything Americana by putting Hinduism down. Nobody can miss this bias in your articles. Have you heard about samagams and they were what conventions were sans frills. Wish you could make your point without getting into unnecessary diversion. Rahul (On #28) This is, by far, the best of your recent articles! Anand Bhatia (On # 38) Your articles are thought - provoking. Sometimes, I read them twice or thrice to grasp the deeper ideas embedded. You have a natural talent to express the ideas and feelings. Soori (On #60) You have had a very eventful life indeed, coming in company with people of unusual talents. In contrast, I knowingly drifted away from success in search of what I thought was truth. I did find it. But I have been going into hardship intentionally and rejected the material world. Subhash (On #76)

Book The Seeker King

Download or read book The Seeker King written by Gary Tillery and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 2013-09-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A woman in the audience once handed Elvis a crown saying, “You’re the King.” “No, honey,” Elvis replied. “There is only one king — Jesus Christ. I’m just a singer.” Gary Tillery presents a coherent view of Elvis’s thoughts through such anecdotes and other recorded facts. We learn, for instance, that Elvis read thousands of books on religion; that his crisis over making bimbo movies like Girl Happy led him to writers such as Gurdjieff, Krishnamurti, and Helena Blavatsky; and that, while driving in Arizona, an epiphany he had inspired him to learn Hindu practice. Elvis came to believe that the Christ shines in everyone and that God wanted him to use his light to uplift people. And so he did. Elvis’s excesses were as legendary as his generosity, yet, despite his lethal reliance on drugs, he remained ever spiritually curious. When he died, he was reading A Scientific Search for the Face of Jesus. This intimate, objective portrait inspires new admiration for the flawed but exceptional man who said, “All I want is to know and experience God. I’m a searcher, that’s what I’m all about.”

Book Boxing in New Mexico 1868 1940

Download or read book Boxing in New Mexico 1868 1940 written by Chris Cozzone and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 28, 1868, a group of men gathered alongside a road 35 miles north of Albuquerque to witness a 165-round, 6-hour bare-knuckle brawl between well-known Colorado pugilist Barney Duffy and "Jack," an unidentified fighter who died of his injuries. Thought to be the first "official" prizefight in New Mexico, this tragic spectacle marked the beginning of the rich and varied history of boxing in the state. Oftentimes an underdog in its battles with the law and public opinion, boxing in New Mexico has paralleled the state's struggles and glories, through the Wild West, statehood, the Depression, war, and economic growth. It is a story set in boomtowns, ghost towns and mining camps, along railroads and in casinos, and populated by cowboys, soldiers, laborers, barrio-bred locals and more. This work chronicles more than 70 years of New Mexico's colorful boxing past, representing the most in-depth exploration of prizefighting in one region yet undertaken.
