Download or read book The Conditions of Being Art written by Jeannine Tang and published by CCS Bard and Dancing Foxes Press. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conditions of Being Art is the first book to examine the activities of groundbreaking contemporary art galleries Pat Hearn Gallery and American Fine Arts, Co. (1983-2004), and the transnational milieu of artists, dealers and critics that surrounded them. Drawing on the archives of dealers Pat Hearn and Colin de Land--both, independently, legendary players on the New York art scene of the 1980s and '90s, and one of the great love stories of the art world--this publication illustrates their distinctive artistic practices, significant exhibitions and events, and daily business. Hearn and de Land championed art that challenged the business of running an art gallery; artists like Renée Green and Susan Hiller, Andrea Fraser and Cady Noland, who employed conceptualism and installation, social and institutional critique. Contributing to the history of exhibitions, institutions and curating, The Conditions of Being Art addresses a significant gap in this literature around experimental commercial spaces in recent art history. This publication is the first book-length critical account of the alternative commercial gallery practices of the 1990s, a moment and a scene that is extremely influential to many of today's art dealers, curators and artists. Hearn and de Land's gallery practices explored new experimental and ethical possibilities within the selling of art, testing the relationship of contemporary art to its markets. In this volume, full-color images, in-depth scholarly investigations and detailed gallery histories vibrantly document how Hearn and de Land tested new notions of what an art gallery could be.
Download or read book Colin De Land American Fine Arts written by Dennis Balk and published by powerHouse Books. This book was released on 2008-05-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the international art world, American Fine Arts, Co., Colin de Land Fine Art was a gallery known equally for its anti-commercial, risk-taking practices and for its charismatic owner, who championed a perennially marginalized discourse that critiqued the status quo of gallery practice. Culled from de Land's extensive archive, Colin de Land, American Fine Arts provides an incomparable look at the activities and personalities that frequented the gallery during its heyday. The photographs and snapshots are accompanied by remembrances from more than 50 international artists and writers associated with the gallery. Part personal history, part expose, Colin de Land, American Fine Arts takes us back to the essence of south SoHo during the late 1980s and 90s, serving as a testament to de Land and his loving wife, gallerist Pat Hearn, both of whom died of cancer but left a legacy of personal style in their respective gallery practices, which have since been sorely missed.

Download or read book Cognitive Support for Learning written by Piet A. M. Kommers and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the various aspects of computational support systems for learners nowadays. It highlights in particular those learning aspects that rely heavily upon one's imagination of knowledge and new ideas. The question is how learners may become more effective through the use of highly graphical computer systems that now conquer almost every desk. As an extrapolation of the constructionistic paradigm, learning is seen here as a process of conceptual design. Witnessing the prudent introduction of CADD software (Computer Aided Drafting and Design) it is obvious that users are generally scrupulous to accept the computer in the ideational stages of design. This book presents both existing conceptual techniques and those estimated to arrive in the few coming years.
Download or read book The Evolution of the Gospel written by John Enoch Powell and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many biblical scholars believe that the Gospel of Matthew was written after those of Mark and Luke. In this controversial book, an eminent politician who is also a distinguished classical scholar refutes this idea, using textual and literary criticism to assert that the Gospel of Matthew preceded the other gospels. Translating and analysing the original Greek source, Powell proceeds to concentrate upon the text of Matthew, as being the earliest form of the gospel that we possess, and to demonstrate how its peculiar characteristics can best be accounted for as being the result of insertions and manipulations, often theologically motivated. Powell argues that the Gospel of Matthew represents an attempted compromise between a pro-gentile book and a critical revision of that book produced for the judaising wing of the early Church, and that material intended to appeal to the followers of John the Baptist was also introduced. The Gospel of Matthew, though given the form of consecutive narrative, is, says Powell, essentially a theological debate carried on by means of allegory: was Jesus the Son of God or a Davidic king?

Download or read book Dark Matter Missing Planets and New Comets written by Tom Van Flandern and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 1999-01-08 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Van Flandern's book adds a new dimension to cosmology--not only does it present a novel approach to timeless issues, it stands up to the closest scientific scrutiny. Even the most respected scientists today will readily admit that the Big Bang Theory is full of holes. But it takes a new look, like Dark Matter, Missing Planets, and New Comets, to explain not only why the theory is wrong but what to substitute in its place. If you are curious about such things as the nature of matter and the origin of the solar system, but feel inadequately equipped to grasp what modern science has to say about such things, read this book. You will not get the all too common condescending attempt to water down the `mysteries' of modern science into a form intelligible to little non scientist you, but rather a straightforward new theory, logically derived in front of your eyes, which challenges the roots of many of today's complex accepted paradigms, yet whose essence is simple enough to be thoroughly communicated to the intelligent layman without "losing it in the translation."
Download or read book Procurement Systems written by Steve Rowlinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-10-09 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procurement Systems details the whole spectrum of procurement issues in the construction industry, starting with the client /customer and running through managerial, cultural and IT-based issues. The book commences with an overveiw of previous work and a section on selection criteria is provided to enable practitioners to make their choices of procurement form. Importantly, perfromance comparisons of different procurement forms are discussed and the main emphasis of the book is to highlight best practice based on the most up-to-date research. One chapter deals specifically with developmentally orientated procurement issues in NICs (newly industrialised countries), where best practice is assessed from a different set of perspectives. The authors contributing to this book are among the most highly respected and eminent in the field.

Book excerpt: American artist Andrea Fraser's energetic parodies of the art world seem like stand-up comedy, whether she's doing her own wacky take on a docent talk or engaging in an erotic encounter with the Guggenheim Bilbao. But her sometimes-hilarious performances address serious issues, like the relationship between an art institution and its visitors, or the meaning of "education" in a museum. Includes multiple video frames and transcripts of four works performed at the Belkin Gallery at the University of British Columbia.
