Book Italian Literature Before 1900 in English Translation

Download or read book Italian Literature Before 1900 in English Translation written by Robin Healey and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 1185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors - Dante Alighieri, [Niccoláo] Machiavelli, and [Giovanni] Boccaccio - and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature."--Pub. desc.

Book Vasari on Technique

    Book Details:
  • Author : Giorgio Vasari
  • Publisher : Forgotten Books
  • Release : 2017-09-17
  • ISBN : 9781528271752
  • Pages : 396 pages

Download or read book Vasari on Technique written by Giorgio Vasari and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the foundations of the Italian Renaissance and art history in Vasari on Technique: Being the Introduction to the Three Arts of Design. Giorgio Vasari was a 16th Century painter, sculptor and architect who is known as the father of art history. His writings on painters, sculptors and architects started a new writing genre, that of the encyclopedia of artist biographies. Vasari was writing when the Renaissance was in full bloom and this book contains many powerful examples of classical art and architecture. Vasari on Technique: Being the Introduction to the Three Arts of Design is divided into three sections: On Architecture, On Sculpture, and On Painting. Each section begins with a discussion of materials, then moves on to forms, and finally to practical considerations on how to paint, sculpt or build powerful works of art. There is a list of illustrations which identifies the plates, illustrations and figures which appear throughout the book. This is a handy guide for a reader who wants to find a particular illustration, along with specifications about the piece. As an artist himself, Vasari has great credibility when he gives advice on how to work with various materials and the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches. He also has the knowledge of a true scholar, expertly explaining the technical and artistic elements of ancient and modern architectural forms, especially the Greek. The book is even more enjoyable because of Vasari's passion for art. For example, after praising classical Greek formations, Vasari attacks the Gothic style as being awful, deformed and demented. When an author blends strong opinions with scholarly discussion the way Vasari does in this book, it enlivens the text and makes art truly come alive.Vasari on Technique: Being the Introduction to the Three Arts of Design is an essential book for artists, art lovers and people who love to read. The book is an excellent resource for Renaissance art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Architectural Model

Download or read book The Architectural Model written by Matthew Mindrup and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of different uses for the architectural model through history—as sign, souvenir, funerary object, didactic tool, medium for design, and architect's muse. For more than five hundred years, architects have employed three-dimensional models as tools to test, refine, and illustrate their ideas. But, as Matthew Mindrup shows, the uses of physical architectural models extend beyond mere representation. An architectural model can also simulate, instruct, inspire, and generate architectural designs. It can be, among other things, sign, souvenir, toy, funerary object, didactic tool, medium, or muse. In this book, Mindrup surveys the history of architectural models by investigating their uses, both theoretical and practical. Tracing the architectural model's development from antiquity to the present, Mindrup also offers an interpretive framework for understanding each of its applications in the context of time and place. He first examines models meant to portray extant, fantastic, or proposed structures, describing their use in ancient funerary or dedicatory practices, in which models are endowed with magical power; as a medium for architectural reverie and inspiration; and as prototypes for twentieth-century experimental designs. Mindrup then considers models that exemplify certain architectural uses, exploring the influence of Leon Battista Alberti's dictum that models be simple, lest they distract from the architect's ideas; analyzing the model as a generative tool; and investigating allegorical, analogical, and anagogical interpretations of models. Mindrup's histories show how the model can be a surrogate for the architectural structure itself, or for the experience of its formal, tactile, and sensory complexity; and beyond that, that the manipulation, play, experimentation, and dreaming enabled by models allow us to imagine architecture in new ways.
