Book Variational Principles of Continuum Mechanics

Download or read book Variational Principles of Continuum Mechanics written by Victor Berdichevsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reviews the two features of the variational approach: its use as a universal tool to describe physical phenomena and as a source for qualitative and quantitative methods of studying particular problems. Berdichevsky’s work differs from other books on the subject in focusing mostly on the physical origin of variational principles as well as establishing their interrelations. For example, the Gibbs principles appear as a consequence of the Einstein formula for thermodynamic fluctuations rather than as the first principles of the theory of thermodynamic equilibrium. Mathematical issues are considered as long as they shed light on the physical outcomes and/or provide a useful technique for the direct study of variational problems. In addition, a thorough account of variational principles discovered in various branches of continuum mechanics is given. This book, the second volume, describes how the variational approach can be applied to constructing models of continuum media, such as the theory of elastic plates; shells and beams; shallow water theory; heterogeneous mixtures; granular materials; and turbulence. It goes on to apply the variational approach to asymptotical analysis of problems with small parameters, such as the derivation of the theory of elastic plates, shells and beams from three-dimensional elasticity theory; and the basics of homogenization theory. A theory of stochastic variational problems is considered in detail too, along with applications to the homogenization of continua with random microstructures.

This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of some variational principles in the linear theory of elasticity and with their application to the determination of the effective moduli o two phase elastic materials is presented. The latter problem in particular and the problem of the determination of effective physical constants of composite materials, in general, received considerable attention. Because of the complexity of the problem, attempts to find effective moduli for such materials were based on simplifying assumptions. A more exact theoretical approach consists of the establishment of bounds on the-265 8174N2 AD-265 818Div. 17 U (TIPTM/SEB) Armament Research and Development Establishment (Gt. Brit.). Thebookisacompletelyrewrittenversionoftheauthor’smonographVariational Principles of Continuum Mechanics which appeared in Russian in 1983. I have been postponing the English translation because I wished to include the variational pr- ciples of irreversible processes in the new edition. Reaching an understanding of this subject took longer than I expected. In its nal form, this book covers all aspects of the story. The part concerned with irreversible processes is tiny, but it determines the accents put on all the results presented. The other new issues included in the book are: entropy of microstructure, variational principles of vortex line dynamics, va- ational principles and integration in functional spaces, some stochastic variational problems, variational principle for probability densities of local elds in composites with random structure, variational theory of turbulence; these topics have not been covered previously in monographic literature.

Book On Some Variational Principles in Anisotropic and Nonhomogeneous Elasticity II A Variational Approach to the Theory of the Elastic Behavior of Polycrystals

Download or read book On Some Variational Principles in Anisotropic and Nonhomogeneous Elasticity II A Variational Approach to the Theory of the Elastic Behavior of Polycrystals written by PENNSYLVANIA UNIV PHILADELPHIA TOWNE SCHOOL OF CIVIL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING. and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN PREVIOUS PAPERS (AD-265 817) the authors established some new variational principles in the linear theory of elasticity for isotropic nonhomogeneous bodies with prescribed surface displacements. These have been applied to the theory of the elastic behavior of multiphase materials. Work is concerned with the generalization of these principles to anisotropic and nonhomogeneous elasticity and the establishment of similar variational principles for a body with prescribed surface tractions. The second part deals with the application of these variational principles to the theory of the elastic behavior of polycrystals. (Author).

Book Elasticity

Download or read book Elasticity written by Adel S. Saada and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elasticity: Theory and Applications reviews the theory and applications of elasticity. The book is divided into three parts. The first part is concerned with the kinematics of continuous media; the second part focuses on the analysis of stress; and the third part considers the theory of elasticity and its applications to engineering problems. This book consists of 18 chapters; the first of which deals with the kinematics of continuous media. The basic definitions and the operations of matrix algebra are presented in the next chapter, followed by a discussion on the linear transformation of points. The study of finite and linear strains gradually introduces the reader to the tensor concept. Orthogonal curvilinear coordinates are examined in detail, along with the similarities between stress and strain. The chapters that follow cover torsion; the three-dimensional theory of linear elasticity and the requirements for the solution of elasticity problems; the method of potentials; and topics related to cylinders, disks, and spheres. This book also explores straight and curved beams; the semi-infinite elastic medium and some of its related problems; energy principles and variational methods; columns and beam-columns; and the bending of thin flat plates. The final chapter is devoted to the theory of thin shells, with emphasis on geometry and the relations between strain and displacement. This text is intended to give advanced undergraduate and graduate students sound foundations on which to build advanced courses such as mathematical elasticity, plasticity, plates and shells, and those branches of mechanics that require the analysis of strain and stress.

Book On Variational Principles in Finite Elasticity

Download or read book On Variational Principles in Finite Elasticity written by N. C. Huang and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, two variation principles are formulated for the theory of finite elasticity. The first variational principle is an extension of Hu and Washizu's variational principle and the second is a generalization of the theory of stationary potential energy in classical elastostatics. New variational variables are introduced. The Euler equations are Rivlin's field equations expressed in terms of undeformed state variables for the theory of finite elasticity. Three examples are solved by the variational technique for illustrative pruposes. (Author).

Book Mathematical Theory of Elasticity of Quasicrystals and Its Applications

Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Elasticity of Quasicrystals and Its Applications written by Tian-You Fan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary work on condensed matter physics, the continuum mechanics of novel materials, and partial differential equations, discusses the mathematical theory of elasticity and hydrodynamics of quasicrystals, as well as its applications. By establishing new partial differential equations of higher order and their solutions under complicated boundary value and initial value conditions, the theories developed here dramatically simplify the solution of complex elasticity problems. Comprehensive and detailed mathematical derivations guide readers through the work. By combining theoretical analysis and experimental data, mathematical studies and practical applications, readers will gain a systematic, comprehensive and in-depth understanding of condensed matter physics, new continuum mechanics and applied mathematics. This new edition covers the latest developments in quasicrystal studies. In particular, it pays special attention to the hydrodynamics, soft-matter quasicrystals, and the Poisson bracket method and its application in deriving hydrodynamic equations. These new sections make the book an even more useful and comprehensive reference guide for researchers working in Condensed Matter Physics, Chemistry and Materials Science.

Book Variational Methods in Nonlinear Elasticity
