Book Manual of Romance Word Classes

Download or read book Manual of Romance Word Classes written by Anna-Maria De Cesare and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Word classes are linguistic categories serving as basis in the description of the vocabulary and grammar of natural languages. While important publications are regularly devoted to their definition, identification, and classification, in the field of Romance linguistics we lack a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of the current research. This Manual offers an updated and detailed discussion of all relevant aspects related to word classes in the Romance languages. In the first part, word classes are discussed from both a theoretical and historical point of view. The second part of the volume takes as its point of departure single word classes, described transversally in all the main Romance languages, while the third observes the relevant word classes from the point of view of specific Romance(-based) varieties. The fourth part explores Romance word classes at the interface of grammar and other fields of research. The Manual is intended as a reference work for all scholars and students interested in the description of both the standard, major Romance languages and the smaller, lesser described Romance(-based) varieties.

This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time the Dutch-speaking regions of the Caribbean and Suriname are brought into fruitful dialogue with another major American literature, that of the anglophone Caribbean. The results are as stimulating as they are unexpected. The editors have coordinated the work of a distinguished international team of specialists. Read separately or as a set of three volumes, the History of Literature in the Caribbean is designed to serve as the primary reference book in this area. The reader can follow the comparative evolution of a literary genre or plot the development of a set of historical problems under the appropriate heading for the English- or Dutch-speaking region. An extensive index to names and dates of authors and significant historical figures completes the volume. The subeditors bring to their respective specialty areas a wealth of Caribbeanist experience. Vera M. Kutzinski is Professor of English, American, and Afro-American Literature at Yale University. Her book Sugar's Secrets: Race and The Erotics of Cuban Nationalism, 1993, treated a crucial subject in the romance of the Caribbean nation. Ineke Phaf-Rheinberger has been very active in Latin American and Caribbean literary criticism for two decades, first at the Free University in Berlin and later at the University of Maryland. The editor of A History of Literature in the Caribbean, A. James Arnold, is Professor of French at the University of Virginia, where he founded the New World Studies graduate program. Over the past twenty years he has been a pioneer in the historical study of the Négritude movement and its successors in the francophone Caribbean.

Book The Story of Papiamentu

Download or read book The Story of Papiamentu written by Gary C. Fouse and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Papiamentu is a non-linguistic history of the creole language, Papiamentu, which is spoken in Cura ao, Aruba and Bonaire. Papiamentu is a Spanish-based creole which most believe to have originated in the 17th century. The exact origin of Papiamentu is in dispute, and this text discusses whether it is the result of the Spanish of explorers mixing with the language of the local Indians, or if it originated with Portuguese slavers in Africa. Also discussed are the activities of the Portuguese explorers and slavers in Africa, the later activities of the Dutch slavers, the history of slavery in Cura ao, the oral and written development of Papiamentu, and the Sephardic Jewish community of Cura ao and their contributions to the development of Papiamentu.
