Book excerpt: First published in 1999, The Nenets’ Song is the first book-length study of the epic song tradition that survives among the Nenets nation of Northern Eurasia, an area which is also the homeland of such widely known epics as the Finnish Kalevala and Yakut Olonkho. The book considers the Nenets’ song tradition within its historical, cultural, social and political contexts, and focuses on its melodic system viewed as a manifestation of musical thought and knowledge. Alla Abramovich-Gomon provides a description of the Nenets’ way of life and their song performances which she has observed while carrying out her field research. The book unravels the epic song’s ties with the Nenets’ shamanistic past and elaborates on a number of cross-disciplinary theories involved in shaping a holistic interpretation of the song tradition. The study concludes that the Nenets’ song tradition embodies the whole of their traditional ‘mother culture’ and has contributed to the people’s survival and adaptation.

The Khasi have a long history of traditions and there is a great deal to learn from its tangible and intangible heritage. Tangible heritage includes handicraft (bamboo, grass and wood), weaving, art etc. These instruments are employed not only to fulfill one’s daily requirements but to add beauty and brightness in the otherwise dull and drab existence. They have been a cementing force in our social and economic life. Art was never meant for the privileged few but has instead, been a connecting thread and a medium of connection for the masses. The intangible heritage includes the oral traditions which have been transmitting the flow of knowledge in the various aspects of history, philosophy, technical skill. It cuts across the discipline of dance and music as well as of informal social practices. Folktales, jokes, proverbs, anecdotes, myths, legends are various forms of narratives, passed on orally, from one generation to another. These narratives are performed in an open area, accompanied with music. The performers and the audience have a strong relationship in romanticizing the dreams and aspirations of the common man, and thus relieving the society from hypertension and frustration. Also, the mysterious life of our ancestors is brought into light through these narratives.

The piano accompaniment version was premiered at the Tanglewood Festival in 2019 by the Boston Symphony Children's Choir, of which Burton is founder and director. The Hallé Children's Choir will premiere the orchestral version of the full work in Manchester, UK, post-pandemic. Vocal Score Co-commission by Boston Symphony and Hallé Concerts Society for their respective Children's Choirs. Two versions - with orchestral or with piano accompaniment. The vocal score is the same for both versions. James Burton is a composer but also a conductor. He is conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and choral director of the Boston Symphony. The book The Lost Words, exquisitely designed, has won multiple awards and is an international best-seller. The vocal score includes Jackie Morris's beautiful imagery in its cover design.

Book excerpt: Written from the perspective of a scholar and performer, Traditional Music and Irish Society investigates the relation of traditional music to Irish modernity. The opening chapter integrates a thorough survey of the early sources of Irish music with recent work on Irish social history in the eighteenth century to explore the question of the antiquity of the tradition and the class locations of its origins. Dowling argues in the second chapter that the formation of what is today called Irish traditional music occurred alongside the economic and political modernization of European society in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Dowling goes on to illustrate the public discourse on music during the Irish revival in newspapers and journals from the 1880s to the First World War, also drawing on the works of Pierre Bourdieu and Jacques Lacan to place the field of music within the public sphere of nationalist politics and cultural revival in these decades. The situation of music and song in the Irish literary revival is then reflected and interpreted in the life and work of James Joyce, and Dowling includes treatment of Joyce’s short stories A Mother and The Dead and the 'Sirens' chapter of Ulysses. Dowling conducted field work with Northern Irish musicians during 2004 and 2005, and also reflects directly on his own experience performing and working with musicians and arts organizations in order to conclude with an assessment of the current state of traditional music and cultural negotiation in Northern Ireland in the second decade of the twenty-first century.
