Book Matthew Poet of the Beatitudes

Download or read book Matthew Poet of the Beatitudes written by H. Benedict Green and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Green argues that the Beatitudes in Matthew's version are a carefully constructed poem, exhibiting a number of the characteristics of Hebrew poetry as we know it from the Old Testament; but as certain of these, such as rhyme and alliteration, cannot survive translation, what we have here is an original composition in Greek. This is shown to be no isolated phenomenon in the gospel; a series of texts found at specially significant points in it disclose similar characteristics. The findings cut across conventional source attributions and reveal the creative hand of the evangelist. By studying the individual beatitudes in their relation to each other as revealed by the formal structure, fresh light is thrown upon their meaning and their background in the scriptures of the Old Testament.

Book Parables and Rhetoric in the Sermon on the Mount

Download or read book Parables and Rhetoric in the Sermon on the Mount written by Ernst Baasland and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Parable research has to a large degree ignored the Sermon on the Mount (SM) and for its part, research into the SM has likewise left the parables by the wayside. However, the use of parabolic language in more than one third of the SM influences its interpretation and indeed opens up a new approach to it. In the current volume, Ernst Baasland focuses on this important factor, whilst also taking the rhetoric of Jesus' teaching into consideration. The author maintains that rhetorical features have a great bearing on the interpretation of the text with the overall structure illuminating the entire composition of the sermon. Fresh insights into its oration therefore serve to challenge the source problem in a new way. The religious and philosophical settings of this most well-known of Christ's preachings are clarified by its parables and rhetoric; and the sermon's Jewish background has often been investigated. While the author continues with that particular task, he simultaneously affords more emphasis to the parallels in (Greek) Hellenistic literature. The combining of all these factors leads to a clearer comprehension of the Sermon on the Mount's philosophy of life and provides a better understanding of this classical text"--

Book Jesus and the Sabbath in Matthew s Gospel

Download or read book Jesus and the Sabbath in Matthew s Gospel written by Yong-Eui Yang and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1997-01-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew's two stories of sabbath controversy contain key materials on the relations between Jesus and the sabbath. Deploying both socio-historical and literary criticisms, the author concludes that for Matthew the sabbath is fulfilled by Jesus-that is to say, Jesus' redemption has fulfilled the ultimate goal for the sabbath. The christological and eschatological character of these stories is thus apparent, and Yang suggests that such an emphasis, over against the Pharisees' casuistic concerns, betrays Matthew's awareness of the danger of a legalistic tendency in sabbath observance among members of his community.

Book The Devil Disease and Deliverance

Download or read book The Devil Disease and Deliverance written by John Christopher Thomas and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The relationships between the Devil and disease, sickness and sin, healing and forgiveness, and exorcism and deliverance form an intriguing and controversial set of issues. This monograph brings some clarity to the topic by offering the first full-length examination of the origins of illness in New Testament thought. In an attempt to respect the diversity of thought within the New Testament, the author employs a method that allows the distinctive contributions of each New Testament writer to be appreciated on their own terms. These readings are followed by an attempt at the construction of a New Testament theology of the Devil, disease and deliverance where the distinctive New Testament voices on this topic are heard in relation to one another. The monograph concludes with a chapter devoted to the implications of this study for Pentecostal theology and ministry."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
