Download or read book Valuing Architecture written by Ashley Paine and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture has always been found in a space between its economic and cultural values. Yet these values are often seen as compromised by, or contingent upon, forces outside the discipline: property prices, real estate markets, and the vicissitudes of local and global economies. The intersections of cultural and economic values are especially conspicuous in architectural heritage, where conflicts between them are most publicly and passionately contested. This book examines the different sites and occasions where such values are bestowed, exchanged, and can create friction through a collection of essays that tackle concrete cases, both historical and contemporary.

Book Exploring Cultural Value

Download or read book Exploring Cultural Value written by Kim Lehman and published by . This book was released on 2021-01-25 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Cultural Value presents ground breaking new research on the use of the cultural value lens to explain and investigate those areas of society where art and culture can have an impact or add value, beyond economic measures. The book develops and advances existing concepts around cultural value, and thus provides a deeper understanding of the impacts and value of the arts and cultural sectors. Contributions bridge academic disciplines and the current discourse of policy-makers, with sections exploring ways of thinking about cultural value, current developments in the field, and challenges for the future. Key themes illustrated throughout include alternative conceptual frameworks of cultural value, national/regional/urban perspectives, evidence from practice, and discussion of how the challenges facing the sectors can be addressed. Exploring Cultural Value combines academic research, case studies, and practitioner perspectives, making a robust and accessible contribution grounded in real world practice. It is a crucial resource for academics, practitioners and policy makers with an interest in the arts, and provides valuable insights into a facet of human endeavour all of us believe to be vital to society.

Book The Value of Culture

Download or read book The Value of Culture written by Arjo Klamer and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture manifests itself in everything human, including the ordinary business of everyday life. Culture and art have their own value, but economic values are also constrained. Art sponsorships and subsidies suggest a value that exceeds market price. So what is the real value of culture? Unlike the usual focus on formal problems, which has 'de-cultured' and 'de-moralized' the practice of economics, this book brings together economists, philosophers, historians, political scientists and artists to try to sort out the value of culture. This is a book not only for economists and social scientists, but also for anybody actively involved in the world of the arts and culture.

Book Culture and Commerce

Download or read book Culture and Commerce written by Mukti Khaire and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art and business are often described as worlds apart, even diametric opposites. And yet, these realms are close cousins in creative industries where firms bring cultural goods to market, attaching price tags to music, paintings, theater, literature, film, and fashion. Building on theories of value construction and cultural production, Culture and Commerce details the processes by which artistic worth is decoded, translated, and converted to economic value. Mukti Khaire introduces readers to three industry players: creators, producers (who bring to market and distribute cultural goods), and intermediaries (who critique and rave about them). Case studies of firms from Chanel and Penguin to tastemakers like the Pritzker Prize and The Sundance Institute illuminate how these professionals construct a vital value chain. Highlighting the role of "pioneer entrepreneurs"—who carve out space for radical, new product categories—Khaire illustrates how creative professionals influence our sense of value, shifting consumer behavior and our culture in deep, surprising ways.

Book Values and Behavior

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sonia Roccas
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2017-08-09
  • ISBN : 3319563521
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Values and Behavior written by Sonia Roccas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are values? How are they different from attitudes, traits, and specific goals? How do our values influence our behavior, and vice versa? How does our culture and environment impact the relationship between values and behavior? These questions and more are rigorously examined by prominent and emerging scholars in this significant volume Values and Behavior: Taking A Cross Cultural Perspective. Personal values are cognitive representations of abstract, desirable motivational goals that guide the way individuals select actions, evaluate people and events, and explain their actions and evaluations. The unique features of values have implications for their impact on behavior. People are highly satisfied with their values and perceive them as close to their ideal selves. At the same time, however, daily interpersonal interaction reveals that individuals hold different, sometimes opposing, value profiles. These individual differences are even more apparent when individuals from different cultures interact. The collected chapters address the links between values and behavior from a cultural perspective. They review studies conducted in various cultures and discuss culture as a moderator of the relationships between values and behavior. Structurally, part I of the volume discusses what values are and how they should be measure; part II then examines the contents of the relationships between values and behavior in different life-domains, including prosocial behavior, aggression, behavior in organizations and relationships formation. Part III explores some of the moderating mechanisms that relate values to behavior. Taken together, these chapters review and synthesize over twenty years of research on values and behavior, and propose new insights that have important implications for both research and for practice.

Book Culture and Value

    Book Details:
  • Author : Regina F. Bendix
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2018-05-09
  • ISBN : 0253035694
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Culture and Value written by Regina F. Bendix and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “eminently readable” collection of essays exploring what happens when cultural heritage meets commerce (Asian Ethnology). When heritage becomes a commodity, when culture is instrumental in driving tourism, and when individuals assert ownership over either, social, ideological, political, and economic motivations intertwine. Bestowing value on “culture” is itself a culturally rooted act, and the essays gathered in Culture and Value focus on the motivations and value regimes people in particular times and contexts have generated to enhance the visibility and prestige of cultural practices, narratives, and artifacts. This collection of essays by noted folklorist Regina F. Bendix offers a personal record of the unfolding scholarly debate regarding value in the studies of tourism, heritage, and cultural property. Written over the course of several decades, Bendix’s case studies and theoretical contributions chronicle the growing and transforming ways in which ethnographic scholarship has observed social actors generating value when carrying culture to market, enhancing value in inventing protective and restorative regimes for culture, and securing the potential for both in devising property rights. Bendix’s work makes a case for a reflexive awareness of the changing scholarly paradigms that inform scholars’ research contributions. “A significant contribution to the study of cultural resources . . . a must read for scholars particularly interested in politics and the allocation of funding and personal rights over tangible and intangible culture.” —Western Folklore
