Book Components of productivity of Mediterranean climate regions Basic and applied aspects

Download or read book Components of productivity of Mediterranean climate regions Basic and applied aspects written by N.S. Margaris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our knowledge of the functional characteristics of the plants of mediterranean-cl imate regions has increased greatly in the past decade. In recent times the possibility of large-scale util ization of biomass for energy from these regions has been proposed. In order to assess the feasibil ity of these proposals we must consider the productive structure of these plant communities and how they vary through time and space. This symposium was an attempt to examine our recently acquired basic knowledge of the environmental I imitations on the productivity of Mediterranean plant communities in relation to the consequences of the possible util ization of these communities for energy and chemicals. Specifically in this book we examine the mechanisms by which plants of mediterranean-cl imate regions maintain their productive capacity under the prevail ing conditions of summer draught and winter cold. We consider the characteristics of leaves, their history, morphology and plasticity. Evergreen sclerophyll leaves are common to the dominant plants of all mediterranean-cl imate regions and thus they have significance in terms of enhancing carbon gain and water-use efficiency as well as ensuring survival under the prevail ing cl imatic conditions.

Book Urban Energy Systems for Low Carbon Cities

Download or read book Urban Energy Systems for Low Carbon Cities written by Ursula Eicker and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an increase of global energy demand arising in urban settlements, the key challenges for the urban energy transition include analysis of energy efficiency options and the potential of renewable energy systems within the existing building stock, making cities a key actor in the transition success. In Urban Energy Systems for Low Carbon Cities, indicators to evaluate urban energy performance are introduced and the status quo of monitoring and efficiency valuation schemes are discussed. The book discusses advances on the state-of-the-art of research in a number of key areas: - Energy demand and consumption mapping and monitoring - Optimization of design and operation of urban supply and distribution systems - Integration of renewable energy and urban energy network models - Demand side management strategies to better match renewable supply and demand and increase flexibilities With innovative modelling methods this book gives a real bottom-up modelling approach used for the simulation of energy consumption, energy conversion systems and distribution networks using engineering methods. - Provides support and guidance on the energy transition issues relating to energy demand, consumption mapping and monitoring - Includes examples from case study cities, including Vienna, Geneva, New York and Stuttgart - Analyzes the potential of energy management strategies in urban areas

Book Waste Management in MENA Regions

Download or read book Waste Management in MENA Regions written by Abdelazim M Negm and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-05 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the state-of-the-art document describing the knowledge, data, cost-effectiveness and technologies employed to manage the waste in several countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordon, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, and Yemen. It covers diverse topics including the status of the waste in the region, solid waste management, solid waste recovery and disposal, the use of the agricultural waste in feeding poultry, sludge disposal and management, wastewater treatment and energy production. Also, the book explains how waste management systems are becoming more complex in many countries with the move from landfill-based to resource recovery-based solutions following the setting of international and national targets to divert waste from landfill and to increase recycling and recovery rates. Besides, this book also evaluates the environmental legislation in the selected countries and suggests new performance enhancements. This book is of interest to environmental professionals including scientists and policymakers in the Middle East, North Africa, and areas with similar features.

Book Energy in the Development of New Caledonia

Download or read book Energy in the Development of New Caledonia written by Yves le Bars and published by IRD Editions. This book was released on 2010 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
