Book Validity and Reliability of the YMCA Submaximal Cycle Test Using an Electrically Braked Ergometer

Download or read book Validity and Reliability of the YMCA Submaximal Cycle Test Using an Electrically Braked Ergometer written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: To test the effect of using an electrically braked ergometer on the validity and reliability of the YMCA submaximal cycle test. Methods: 22 male and 13 female subjects ages 19 to 31 completed one maximal treadmill test and four submaximal cycle tests to measure and estimate VO2max, respectively. The maximal tests involved recording heart rate and VO2 during graded exercise until volitional fatigue; an actual max was verified when two out of the following criteria: respiratory Exchange Ratio> 1.1, VO2 plateau (150 ml/min increase in VOsub2/sub during final stage), and achievement of 90% age-predicted HR max (or completed a validation stage). The submaximal tests were conducted in accordance with ACSM guidelines (10supth/sup ed.). Measured and predicted VOsub2max/sub measurements were compared between tests using repeated measures ANOVA and Pearson correlations. Results: The treadmill VOsub2max/sub protocol yielded significantly higher values (50.3 ± 7.7 mL/kg/min) than the YMCA submax protocol using a friction-braked (40.8 ± 5.5 mL/kg/min) and electrically braked ergometer (38.8 ± 4.5 mL/kg/min). Furthermore, estimated VOsub2max/sub using the friction-braked ergometer was higher than that observed using the electrically braked ergometer. There were similar reliability coefficients between the friction-braked (R = 0.63) and electrically braked (R = 0.52) ergometers. Lastly, a moderately strong (R = 0.74) relationship was observed between actual VOsub2max/sub and prediction error (VOsub2max/sub - estimated VOsub2max/sub). Conclusion: Both Monark and Viasprint ergometers severely underestimated VOsub2max /subin a sample of generally fit, young individuals. Future investigations should explore the possible relationship between higher aerobic fitness and accuracy of predicting VOsub2max

Book The Effect of Electrically braked Cycle Ergometers on the Validity of the YMCA Cycle Ergometer Test

Download or read book The Effect of Electrically braked Cycle Ergometers on the Validity of the YMCA Cycle Ergometer Test written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) serves as an accurate predictor of an individual's cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and is typically measured via a maximal treadmill test. Due to costs, age and health limitations, submaximal tests (such as the YMCA test) can be administered to estimate VO2max values. There is much dispute regarding the validity and accuracy of these tests as estimators of CRF. This study investigated the effect of using an electrically-braked cycle ergometer on the validity of the YMCA cycle ergometer test. A population of healthy, fit college-aged individuals (n = 20) were administered one maximal treadmill test to obtain actual VO2max, and four submaximal tests following the YMCA protocol (2x Monark ergometer and 2x Viapsrint ergometer) to estimate VO2max. Overall this study observed estimated VO2max values obtained from the YMCA protocol underpredicts VO2max (regardless of whether the test is performed on either an electrically-braked or a mechanically-braked ergometer. Neither submaximal test showed a strong correlation (Monark: R = 0.53 & Viasprint: R = 0.30) with actual VO2max but the Monark test was more valid and reliable than the Viasprint test due to the lack of a significant validity and reliability coefficient for the electrically-braked ergometer protocol. Additionally, both submaximal tests showed relatively low reliability coefficients (Monark: R = 0.50 R; Viasprint: R = 0.42). The findings from this study indicate that the YMCA submaximal test needs to undergo improvements in order to serve as an accurate predictor of VO2max in this population.

This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by Corey H. Evans, Russell D. White, and coauthorsis a gem. There was a time when exercise testing was largely limited to cardiologists, but no more. Ex- cise testing, which providesinformationon tness, the risk of coronarydisease, and all around vitality, is now being performed in the of ces of primary care physicians across the United States. Although there is a signi cant risk in some populations, a careful doctor who takes the trouble to become knowledgeable in exercise physiology and the pat- physiologyof coronary artery disease can use exercise testing to improve his ability to give excellent, preventive medicine. Over the years I have read many books on this subject, and even contributed to some, andthis oneratesrightup therewith the best. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last several years, Clinical Exercise Testing has become an increasingly important tool for patient evaluation in clinical medicine due to a growing awareness of the limitations of traditional resting cardiopulmonary measurements. Emphasizing scientific and technological advances and focusing on clinical applications for patient diagnosis and management, this volume provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary review of clinical exercise testing, concentrating on Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET). 25 reader-friendly chapters discuss important topics, including the physiologic responses to exercise in normal subjects, in the aged and in various disease states; the set-up of an exercise lab; the methodology and protocols used for clinical exercise testing; and an integrative approach to the interpretation of CPET results. CPET in heart failure, deconditioning, COPD, ILD, pulmonary vascular disease, neuromuscular disease, and asthma is thoroughly discussed. Clinical applications including pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation, heart and lung transplantation evaluation, unexplained exertional dyspnea assessment, evaluation for lung resection and lung volume reduction surgery, and impairment-disability evaluation are also covered in detail. Additional chapters on clinical exercise testing in children, during pregnancy and the postpartum, and in other systemic disorders complete this extensive publication. Written by well-respected experts, this volume will be a valuable resource for a wide audience including pulmonologists, cardiologists, pediatricians, exercise physiologists, rehabilitation specialists, nurse clinician specialists, and respiratory therapists.
