Book excerpt: Vashti Chamberlin is a 20 year old college student who wishes for nothing more than a quiet, unexciting, very routine life. Since she was a child Vashti has been plagued by the supernatural. For as long as she can remember she has seen what others do not, experienced the unexplainable and sometimes horrific manifestations; the only thing she truly desires is for it all to go away. For nearly five years her life has been quiet and she truly believed that maybe, just maybe, the universe was going to cut her a break and free her from this curse. Alas, the universe is not so kind. Vashti starts being haunted by visions of what she can only describe as a past life. Once the visions begin, there is no turning them off. She learns she has a power, a power passed down through generations, a power so great that none who have carried it before her have ever learned how to use it. The previous carriers of this gift, were either killed by it or died defending it, but none let it fall into evil's hands. Vashti also learns there isn't just this new power to defend, she is on a deadline to do so. If she isn't able to take full control of the power it will kill her by her 21st birthday, and more importantly the evil demons tracking her will win. But something else Vashti doesn't want to lose along with her life and relative peace of the universe, is this curious new love she has found on her journey. A love so pure it has spanned centuries. This book is for people who enjoy a roller coaster ride of past lives, alternate dimensions, demon attacks, and ass kicking weaponry. It is a first person narrative that will keep readers wanting to turn the pages to see more of the adventure, betrayal, love, and personal growth.

Download or read book Dreaming of Animals written by Valerie Harms and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the links between the "inner" world of our imagination, emotions, and thoughts and the "outer" world where we encounter animals? Can it be that the psychological and ecological are one and the same? This book shows how their convergence might alter our perception of "community." Currently the connection between people and animals appears dysfunctional because of the accelerated loss of species. Since we will not save what we do not love, this book seeks to restore the honor and importance of animals. Dreams, including daydreams (thoughts, ideas, cultural myths) and sleep dreams, have positive and negative consequences in the world. In order to help heal ourselves and the Earth, this book dives deeply into the lives of many animals, documents our relationship to them over time, and shows how to work with dreams and dialogues. A great emotion, transforming in effect, is released when we take the beauty and power of dream animals to heart.

Download or read book Echopraxia written by Peter Watts and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepare for a different kind of singularity in Peter Watts' Echopraxia, the follow-up to the Hugo-nominated novel Blindsight It's the eve of the twenty-second century: a world where the dearly departed send postcards back from Heaven and evangelicals make scientific breakthroughs by speaking in tongues; where genetically engineered vampires solve problems intractable to baseline humans and soldiers come with zombie switches that shut off self-awareness during combat. And it's all under surveillance by an alien presence that refuses to show itself. Daniel Bruks is a living fossil: a field biologist in a world where biology has turned computational, a cat's-paw used by terrorists to kill thousands. Taking refuge in the Oregon desert, he's turned his back on a humanity that shatters into strange new subspecies with every heartbeat. But he awakens one night to find himself at the center of a storm that will turn all of history inside-out. Now he's trapped on a ship bound for the center of the solar system. To his left is a grief-stricken soldier, obsessed by whispered messages from a dead son. To his right is a pilot who hasn't yet found the man she's sworn to kill on sight. A vampire and its entourage of zombie bodyguards lurk in the shadows behind. And dead ahead, a handful of rapture-stricken monks takes them all to a meeting with something they will only call "The Angels of the Asteroids." Their pilgrimage brings Dan Bruks, the fossil man, face-to-face with the biggest evolutionary breakpoint since the origin of thought itself. Download or read book The Right Sort of Woman written by Precious McKenzie Stearns and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rhetoric surrounding Empire, freedom, and adventure are nowhere more striking than in nineteenth-century British women’s travel writing. The Right Sort of Woman charts the progression of British feminism in relationship to exploration of the Empire. Precious McKenzie introduces us to the lesser known writings of Florence Douglas Dixie, Mrs. Aubrey Le Blond, and Isabel Savory, and also revisits the more widely read travel texts of Isabella Bird Bishop and Mary Kingsley. Their travel writings explore the hotly debated Victorian ideologies of femininity, equality, and fitness. McKenzie contends that British women travel writers found opportunities for freedom when traveling abroad. Women travelers could participate in what were traditionally men’s sports – hunting, riding, canoeing, shooting, mountaineering – when far away from strict Victorian social codes of behavior. Because of their athletic pursuits while abroad, British women travelers found their health improved as did their self-reliance and self-confidence. McKenzie considers how sports shaped the British feminist movement and then became integral to the revolutionary image of the New Woman at the fin de siècle.
