Book The Lonely City

Download or read book The Lonely City written by Olivia Laing and published by Picador. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism #1 Book of the Year from Brain Pickings Named a best book of the year by NPR, Newsweek, Slate, Pop Sugar, Marie Claire, Elle, Publishers Weekly, and Lit Hub A dazzling work of biography, memoir, and cultural criticism on the subject of loneliness, told through the lives of iconic artists, by the acclaimed author of The Trip to Echo Spring. When Olivia Laing moved to New York City in her mid-thirties, she found herself inhabiting loneliness on a daily basis. Increasingly fascinated by the most shameful of experiences, she began to explore the lonely city by way of art. Moving from Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks to Andy Warhol’s Time Capsules, from Henry Darger’s hoarding to David Wojnarowicz’s AIDS activism, Laing conducts an electric, dazzling investigation into what it means to be alone, illuminating not only the causes of loneliness but also how it might be resisted and redeemed. Humane, provocative, and moving, The Lonely City is a celebration of a strange and lovely state, adrift from the larger continent of human experience, but intrinsic to the very act of being alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the reader opens the book, the first impression may be: Oh, my God, that’s a lot of reading here! But as soon as he/she enters the universe of the main character, Valerie, he/she forgets about the number of pages and becomes solidary with her. The vast majority of people have simple, monotonous lives, they are born, go to school, then to work, get married, have children, die. Without too many incidents. It's not Valerie's case. This woman's life story is amazing, making you ask yourself, WHY? Why do some people have a life full of unpleasant surprises, of misfortune we could say, all the way? Is it only given to chosen people to live hard lives? Their life is similar to the characters’ in the fairy tales that go through many difficult moments, extreme moments sometimes, to finally get their well-deserved reward, and the conclusion good overcomes evil is justified. Really? In the book, the KARMA idea is repeatedly mentioned: what goes around, comes around. And yet there is a mystery... Why are we born in our families? Does the unborn child choose his parents and the way of life according to the mission his soul has in the world? The more we choose a harder way, the brighter our soul will be at a time when the final countdown is taking place? Really? Let's hope so! It sounds optimistic. This book seems to be especially addressed to women, but that’s not right! Anyone can learn something from Valerie's story. As a conclusion, I could say that the message of the book is: a winner is a dreamer who never gives up no matter how bitter brew gets in life’s cup!

Book The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films

Download or read book The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films written by Carl Royer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Go behind the scenes with an insightful look at horror films—and the directors who create them The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films: Dark Parades examines the work of several of the genre’s most influential directors and investigates how traditional themes of isolation, alienation, death, and transformation have helped build the foundation of horror cinema. Authors Carl and Diana Royer examine the techniques used by Alfred Hitchcock that place his work squarely in the horror (rather than suspense) genre, discuss avant-garde cinema’s contributions to mainstream horror, explore films that use the apartment setting as the “cell of horror,” and analyze how angels and aliens function as the supernatural “Other.” A unique resource for film students and film buffs alike, the book also examines Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy and the fusion of science, technology, and quasi-religious themes in David Cronenberg’s films. Instead of presenting a general overview of the horror genre or an analysis of a specific sub-genre, actor, or director, The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films offers an imaginative look at classic and contemporary horror cinema. The book examines Surrealist films such as Un Chien Andalou and Freaks, the connections among the concepts of voyeurism, paranoia, and alienation in films like Rear Window, Rosemary’s Baby, Blue Velvet, and The Blair Witch Project; the use of otherworldly creatures in films such as The Prophecy, Dogma, and The Day The Earth Stood Still; and the films of directors George Romero, John Waters, and Darren Aronofsky, to name just a few. This unique book also includes an extensive A-to-Z filmography and a bibliography of writings on, and about, horror cinema from filmmakers, film critics, and film historians. The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films examines: “Body Doubles and Severed Hands”—the common ancestry of avant-garde “art” films and exploitation horror B-movies “And I Brought You Nightmares”—recurring themes of psychological terror in Alfred Hitchcock’s films “Horror, Humor, Poetry”—Sam Raimi’s transformation of “drive-in” horror cinema “Atheism and 'The Death of Affect'”—David Cronenberg’s obsessions, interests, and cautionary messages in films ranging from Videodrome to Dead Ringers to eXistenZ and much more! The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films: Dark Parades is a unique resource of critical analysis for academics working in film and popular culture, film historians, and anyone interested in horror cinema.

'The Well of Loneliness' is a novel that follows an upper-class Englishwoman who falls in love with another woman while serving as an ambulance driver in World War I. Marguerite Radclyffe Hall was born on 12th August 1880, in Bournemouth, England. Hall's first novel The Unlit Lamp (1924) was a lengthy and grim tale that proved hard to sell. It was only published following the success of the much lighter social comedy The Forge (1924), which made the best-seller list of John O'London's Weekly. Hall is a key figure in lesbian literature for her novel The Well of Loneliness (1928). This is her only work with overt lesbian themes and tells the story of the life of a masculine lesbian named Stephen Gordon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A graceful ethnographic account that speaks to broad concerns within medical anthropology . . . a remarkable contribution to Tibetan Studies.” —Sienna R. Craig, author of Healing Elements Traditional medicine enjoys widespread appeal in today’s Russia, an appeal that has often been framed either as a holdover from pre-Soviet times or as the symptom of capitalist growing pains and vanishing Soviet modes of life. Mixing Medicines seeks to reconsider these logics of emptiness and replenishment. Set in Buryatia, a semi-autonomous indigenous republic in Southeastern Siberia, the book offers an ethnography of the institutionalization of Tibetan medicine, a botanically-based therapeutic practice framed as at once foreign, international, and local to Russia’s Buddhist regions. By highlighting the cosmopolitan nature of Tibetan medicine and the culturally specific origins of biomedicine, the book shows how people in Buryatia trouble entrenched center-periphery models, complicating narratives about isolation and political marginality. Chudakova argues that a therapeutic life mediated through the practices of traditional medicines is not a last-resort response to sociopolitical abandonment but depends on a densely collective mingling of human and non-human worlds that produces new senses of rootedness, while reshaping regional and national conversations about care, history, and belonging. “In this insightful and well-written ethnography, Tatiana Chudakova shows the elusiveness of Tibetan medicine as Siberia’s Buryat minority seeks to maintain the practice’s integrity and their status as a unique group while also striving to be a part of the Russian nation. Carefully researched and meticulously argued, Mixing Medicines offers a nuanced case for the intimate ties between today’s Russia and Inner Asia.” —Manduhai Buyandelger, author of Tragic Spirit

Book Teaching and Advocacy

Download or read book Teaching and Advocacy written by Denny Taylor and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to children who live on the edge? Children in families that are trying to make it somehow, someway, anyway they can-children with disabilities, who speak other languages, who are told they are different and who know they don't fit? What happens to adolescents who are kicked out of regular high school, who end up under the control of the social welfare system, who belong to gangs, whose friends are killed by gunfire? How can they articulate their own positions and needs? What kinds of literacy do they require so that society will recognize them? Who is their advocate? Because literacy can be used to enable or disable, those children marginalized by society must be literate to survive, and teachers are often their only advocates. But teachers often stand alone when they advocate. For most teachers there are no guidelines available on teaching and advocacy, and we rarely talk about the role that literacy plays in providing opportunities for teachers to work as advocates. Exploring how literacy learning is enabled and disabled offers that opportunity. The teacher-researchers in this book use written texts to uncover the hidden assumptions that shape our perceptions about people's positions in society. They focus on how language is done, what we do with it, how we define ourselves in print, how students are defined-often reinvented-in obscure documents that control their lives. Teaching and Advocacy encourages teachers to stand beside their students, to expose the hidden assumptions in official documents, to develop alternative explanations, and above all, to advocate. Following each chapter, Denny Taylor's interview with the author reveals a rare commitment to children and to advocacy and demonstrates the involvement implicit in qualitative research.

Book Talking with Children About Loss

Download or read book Talking with Children About Loss written by Maria Trozzi and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1999-10-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through captivating stories and thoughtful analysis, Maria Trozzi explains how to handle the difficult job of talking with children and adolescents about loss, with discussions about: * How children perceive and interpret events such as death, disability, and divorce * Guiding children through the four tasks of mourning * Helping children face funerals, wakes, and memorial services * Children's fears and fantasies: how they express them, and how to address them * Age-appropriate responses to children's questions and concerns * Talking to children about long-term illness, suicide, family or community tragedy, and other special situations * What to do when children won't talk about loss, and when to seek professional help"The wisdom, authenticity, and sheer presence of the author are evident from page one until the end of the beautifully written book. Terms like 'ground-breaking' and 'innovative' have been triviliazed by overuse. In this case they are deserved." --Stan Turecki, M.D., author of The Difficult Child
