Book excerpt: Valentine Place is a dark valentine. But these forty-three poems are not only about desire, marriage, betrayal, and divorce, they're about the whole gamut of emotions surrounding the pursuit of happiness. Keenly felt, Lehman's work is never merely confessional. He uses a variety of techniques here, and the narrative that emerges is mysterious and provocative - a love affair as seen through a Cubist prism. Lehman writes with candor, at times with high humor, and frequently with a cinematic eye trained by Hollywood and hard-boiled detective novels. From "First Lines" to "Last Words", from "The Secret Life" to "Young Death", Valentine Place reveals a talent that is daring and original.

His widowed mother is now a savvy entrepreneur, his family home has been turned into student housing and his brothers seem to think his well-meant advice is just bossy interference. And then there's Maddie Lamont—Dylan doesn't know what to think about her. People change. Maddie's grown up a lot since the summer she spent with the Donovans. The braces, thick glasses and boyish figure have all been replaced, and Dylan's man enough to appreciate the transformation. Book excerpt: Edgar Award Finalist: A former Miami Beach tennis pro discovers the dangerous price of marrying for money in “one of the year’s best chillers” (The New York Times Book Review). There was a time when Davis Cup winner Chris Monte had it all. Now, down and out in Dade County, restringing racquets at a South Beach tennis shop and hiring himself out for an occasional lesson, he’s dead broke. Then, along comes Elizabeth Jones, a mousy student with an irresistible proposition: fifty thousand dollars in exchange for marrying her. As sole beneficiary of the Valentine estate, Elizabeth is set to inherit a fortune. There’s only one stipulation: She must be married. She’ll collect, they’ll divorce, and Chris will get paid off. Simple. But there are a few details Elizabeth left out, including the other claimants who are ruthlessly scheming to get their shares; her former boss, a goon with shady connections; her institutionalized mother, the target of whispers and gossip; the syndicate representative behind the execution of the will; and the pressing question of the actual identity of the deceased. Before long, Chris is in over his head. And wondering what his real part is in this twisted game of family secrets, Chris has good reason to fear that in agreeing to marry Elizabeth, he’s set in motion the carefully drawn plans for his own murder. From a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, The Valentine Estate is a gripping thriller and was named an Edgar Award finalist for Best Novel.

Book Milliken s Bend

  • Author : Linda Barnickel
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 2013-04-15
  • ISBN : 0807149926
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Milliken s Bend written by Linda Barnickel and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At Milliken's Bend, Louisiana, a Union force composed predominantly of former slaves met their Confederate adversaries in one of the bloodiest small engagements of the war. This important fight received some attention in the North and South but soon drifted into obscurity. In Milliken's Bend, Linda Barnickel uncovers the story of this long-forgotten and highly controversial battle. The fighting at Milliken's Bend occurred in June 1863, about fifteen miles north of Vicksburg on the west bank of the Mississippi River, where a brigade of Texas Confederates attacked a Federal outpost. Most of the Union defenders had been slaves less than two months before. The new African American recruits fought well, despite their minimal training, and Milliken's Bend helped prove to a skeptical northern public that black men were indeed fit for combat duty. Soon after the battle, accusations swirled that Confederates had executed some prisoners taken from the "Colored Troops." The charges eventually led to a congressional investigation and contributed to the suspension of prisoner exchanges between the North and South. Barnickel's compelling and comprehensive account of the battle illuminates not only the immense complexity of the events that transpired in northeastern Louisiana during the Vicksburg Campaign but also the implications of Milliken's Bend upon the war as a whole. The battle contributed to southerner's increasing fears of slave insurrection and heightened their anxieties about emancipation. In the North, it helped foster a commitment to allow free blacks and former slaves to take part in the war to end slavery. And for African Americans, both free and enslaved, Milliken's Bend symbolized their never-ending struggle for freedom.

Book Voice Terminal Echo Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Voice Terminal Echo Routledge Revivals written by Jonathan Goldberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, this title examines a set of English Renaissance texts by Shakespeare, Spenser, Herbert, Marvell and Milton, within the theoretic framework of postmodern thought. Following an opening chapter that argues for the value of this conjunction as a way of understanding literary history, subsequent chapters draw upon Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction of photocentrism and Jacques Lacan’s analysis of the agency of the letter to offer fully theorized readings. Throughout, there is a sustained concern with the transformations of such Ovidian figures as Narcissus and Echo, Perseus and Medusa, Orpheus and Eurydice, and with the echo effects of Virgilian pastoral, as paradigms for the interplay of voice and writing.
