Book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services

Download or read book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 4 million U.S. service members took part in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.

Book Implementation Science at a Glance

Download or read book Implementation Science at a Glance written by National Cancer Institute (U.S.) and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many effective interventions can reduce cancer risk, incidence, and death, as well as enhance quality of life, they are of no benefit if they cannot be delivered to those in need. In the face of increasingly dynamic and resource-constrained conditions, implementation science plays a critical role in delivering cancer control practices. This 30-page workbook was written by members of the NCI (National Cancer Institute) implementation Science team and reviewed by nearly 100 public health practitioners and implementation science researchers. Through summaries of key theories, methods, and models, the guide shows how greater use of implementation science can support the effective adoption of evidence-based interventions. Case studies illustrate how practitioners are successfully applying implementation science in their cancer control programs

Book excerpt: In addition to providing health care to vets, the VA funds research that focuses on health conditions vets may experience. Experts estimate that up to 20% of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom vets have experienced PTSD and demand for PTSD treatment is increasing. This report examined VA¿s funding of PTSD research, and its processes for funding PTSD research proposals, reviewing and incorporating research outcomes into clinical practice guidelines -- tools that offer clinicians recommendations for clinical services but do not require clinicians to provide one service over another -- and determined which PTSD services are required to be made available at VA facilities. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand report.
