Book Packet Switching Tomorrow s Communications Today

Download or read book Packet Switching Tomorrow s Communications Today written by Roy Rosner and published by Springer. This book was released on 1982-08-30 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Packet switching has emerged as a telecommunications technique with unlimited potential. Because it permits communications resources to be used at utmost efficiency, packet switching can adapt to a wide range of user services and user demands. Public packet switching networks have been built or are planned in more than 20 countries around the world, and numerous private and experimental networks are currently using packet switching. Presently packet switching is used primarily in connection with computer and data communication. However, its effectiveness for voice, video, and other wideband telecommunications services has been demonstrated, and as advanced data processing techniques improve the computer processors that form the heart of the packet switches, this application of the technique will undoubtedly become widespread. This book explains how packet networks operate, how they compare to alternative techniques, and how the many options in the design and use of packet networks are interrelated. The needs of both suppliers and users of packet net works are addressed throughout the book, particularly because one's viewpoint can have a significant impact on design choices.

Book Packet Switching in a Multi access Broadcast Channel with Application to Satellite Communication in a Computer Network

Download or read book Packet Switching in a Multi access Broadcast Channel with Application to Satellite Communication in a Computer Network written by Simon S. Lam and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report considers a packet switching technique applicable to packet communication using a satellite or ground radio channel. The objective of this research is to develop analytic models for the evaluation and optimization of the system performance in terms of stability, throughput and delay. Advantages of packet switched satellite and ground radio systems over conventional wire communications for large computer-communication networks are discussed. The emphasis of this research is on a high-speed channel shared by a large population of 'small' users. The channel behavior is typical of 'contention' systems in which the throughput vanishes to zero as the load on the system increases. This phenomenon is called channel saturation. The channel may go into saturation as a result of (a) time fluctuations, and (b) stochastic fluctuations in the channel input. The channel response to time varying inputs is first studied using a deterministic approximation analysis. The effect of (b) is then studied through probabilistic models. (Modified author abstract).

Book First International Conference on Optical Communications and Networks ICOCN 2002

Download or read book First International Conference on Optical Communications and Networks ICOCN 2002 written by Cambyse Guy Omidyar and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical communications networks are becoming increasingly important as there is demand for high capacity links. Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) is widely deployed at the core networks to accommodate high capacity transport systems. Optical components such as optical amplifiers, tunable filters, transceivers, termination devices and add-drop multiplexers are becoming more reliable and affordable. Access and metropolitan area networks are increasingly built with optical technologies to overcome the electronic bottleneck at network edges. New components and subsystems for very high speed optical networks offer new design options. The proceedings of the First International Conference on Optical Communications and Networks present high quality recent research results in the areas of optical communications, network components, architectures, protocols, planning, design, management and operation.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by W. H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 22 (thesis year 1977) a total of 10,658 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 227 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 22 reports theses submitted in 1977, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Multiple Access Protocols

Download or read book Multiple Access Protocols written by Raphael Rom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer communication networks have come of age. Today, there is hardly any professional, particularly in engineering, that has not been the user of such a network. This proliferation requires the thorough understanding of the behavior of networks by those who are responsible for their operation as well as by those whose task it is to design such networks. This is probably the reason for the large number of books, monographs, and articles treating relevant issues, problems, and solutions in this field. Among all computer network architectures, those based on broadcast mul tiple access channels stand out in their uniqueness. These networks appear naturally in environments requiring user mobility where the use of any fixed wiring is impossible and a wireless channel is the only available option. Because of their desirable characteristics multiple access networks are now used even in environments where a wired point-to-point network could have been installed. The understanding of the operation of multiple access network through their performance analysis is the focus of this book.

Book Random Access Techniques for Data Transmission Over Packet Switched Radio Networks

Download or read book Random Access Techniques for Data Transmission Over Packet Switched Radio Networks written by Fouad A. Tobagi and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the behavior of a population of data terminals which use packet-switching to communicate with a central station over a multiple-access radio channel. In order to reduce the interference among conflicting packets, we introduce Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) as a method for multiplexing the terminal traffic in the packet radio environment. In this access mode, a terminal will inhibit its transmission when it senses the carrier of any other transmission. This method is effective when the propagation delay is small compared to the packet transmission time. However, the performance of CSMA is highly dependent on the sensing ability of each terminal; unfortunately, many situations exist in which some terminals are hidden from others (either because they are out-of-sight or out-of-range). The existence of hidden terminals significantly degrades the performance of CSMA. To eliminate the hidden terminal problem, we consider a natural extension of CSMA, namely, the Busy Tone Multiple Access (BTMA). BTMA with hidden terminals performs almost as well as CSMA without hidden terminals. A second alternative for multiplexing the terminals on a packet radio channel is to use reservation techniques. Here we study the Split-channel Reservation Multiple Access mode as one implementation of such reservation techniques. These many access modes are compared with regard to throughput and delay.
