Book excerpt: The debate over affirmative action has raged for over four decades, with little give on either side. Most agree that it began as noble effort to jump-start racial integration; many believe it devolved into a patently unfair system of quotas and concealment. Now, with the Supreme Court set to rule on a case that could sharply curtail the use of racial preferences in American universities, law professor Richard Sander and legal journalist Stuart Taylor offer a definitive account of what affirmative action has become, showing that while the objective is laudable, the effects have been anything but. Sander and Taylor have long admired affirmative action's original goals, but after many years of studying racial preferences, they have reached a controversial but undeniable conclusion: that preferences hurt underrepresented minorities far more than they help them. At the heart of affirmative action's failure is a simple phenomenon called mismatch. Using dramatic new data and numerous interviews with affected former students and university officials of color, the authors show how racial preferences often put students in competition with far better-prepared classmates, dooming many to fall so far behind that they can never catch up. Mismatch largely explains why, even though black applicants are more likely to enter college than whites with similar backgrounds, they are far less likely to finish; why there are so few black and Hispanic professionals with science and engineering degrees and doctorates; why black law graduates fail bar exams at four times the rate of whites; and why universities accept relatively affluent minorities over working class and poor people of all races. Sander and Taylor believe it is possible to achieve the goal of racial equality in higher education, but they argue that alternative policies -- such as full public disclosure of all preferential admission policies, a focused commitment to improving socioeconomic diversity on campuses, outreach to minority communities, and a renewed focus on K-12 schooling -- will go farther in achieving that goal than preferences, while also allowing applicants to make informed decisions. Bold, controversial, and deeply researched, Mismatch calls for a renewed examination of this most divisive of social programs -- and for reforms that will help realize the ultimate goal of racial equality.

The booklet is divided up into three parts: the first part provides general information on what a mining district is, how many mining districts are in Utah, types of mineral deposits found at these districts, and landownership issues. The second part includes individual mining-district discussions containing information on location, production, history, geology, mineralogy, and current/future operations. The third part includes a glossary of geologic terms and other useful resources in the appendices, such as a descriptive list of minerals found in the districts, geologic time scale, and a list of mineral resources of the mining districts.
Download or read book Consensus Preferred Recurrence interval and Vertical Slip rate Estimates written by William R. Lund and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the Utah Quaternary Fault Parameters Working Group (hereafter referred to as the Working Group) review and evaluation of Utah’s Quaternary fault paleoseismic-trenching data. The purpose of the review was to (1) critically evaluate the accuracy and completeness of the paleoseismictrenching data, particularly regarding earthquake timing and displacement, (2) where the data permit, assign consensus, preferred recurrence-interval (RI) and vertical slip-rate (VSR) estimates with appropriate confidence limits to the faults/fault sections under review, and (3) identify critical gaps in the paleoseismic data and recommend where and what kinds of additional paleoseismic studies should be performed to ensure that Utah’s earthquake hazard is adequately documented and understood. It is important to note that, with the exception of the Great Salt Lake fault zone, the Working Group’s review was limited to faults/fault sections having paleoseismic-trenching data. Most Quaternary faults/fault sections in Utah have not been trenched, but many have RI and VSR estimates based on tectonic geomorphology or other non-trench-derived studies. Black and others compiled the RI and VSR data for Utah’s Quaternary faults, both those with and without trenches.

Download or read book Annual Review and Forecast of Utah Coal Production and Distribution 2006 written by Michael D. Vanden Berg and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utah coal production in 2006 increased for the second straight year to 26.1 million short tons, 6.4% higher than 2005’s production total and 20% higher than the 10-year low experienced in 2004. This year’s increase was the result of renewed longwall mining at the Skyline mine and significant production increases at Aberdeen,West Ridge, and SUFCO. In addition, Utah achieved record production in the Book Cliffs coal field, record production in Carbon County, and record production on State lands. In fact, in 2007, coal production on State lands is expected to out-pace federal coal production for the first time in history. Despite this recent surge in production, many coal mine operators are experiencing increasingly difficult mining conditions, resulting in a higher ash product.

Download or read book Analysis of Septic tank Density for Three Areas in Cedar Valley Iron County Utah written by Mike Lowe and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2000 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of septic tank soil-absorption systems on ground-water quality for three areas in Cedar Valley where septic tank soil-absorption systems are typically used for wastewater disposal. These areas have some existing development, but we anticipate that there will be additional development in the future. The Utah Geological Survey evaluated the potential impact of the projected potential development on ground-water quality based on septic-tank-system densities using a mass-balance approach similar to an analysis conducted by Hansen, Allen, and Luce for Heber and Round Valleys, Wasatch County, Utah. The selection of the evaluated areas was made in consultation with local government officials. This study may be used as a model for other evaluations of the impact of proposed subdivision site(s) on ground-water quality and allow planners to more effectively determine appropriate development densities.
Download or read book Ceratosaurus Dinosauria Theropoda written by James H. Madsen and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2000 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ceratosauria is modified to include two super families with one new subfamily. Two new species of Ceratosaurus are described, the first based on an articulated skeleton from the Fruita Paleontological Area in western Colorado, and the second on skeletal elements of a single individual from the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry in east-central Utah. A number of additional specimens, identifiable only to genus, have been found in North America and are mentioned or briefly described. Specimens from East Africa and Switzerland are also considered to be identifiable only to genus. The peculiar genus Labrosaurus is placed in synonymy with Allosaurus.

Download or read book Utah Mineral Activity Summary for 1995 written by Roger L. Bon and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1996 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The value of Utah's non-petroleum mineral production in 1995 is estimated to be $2.5 billion, an increase of more than $300 million from 1994, making 1995 production an all-time high. Contributions from each of the major industry segments are: base metals, $1,198 million (48 percent of total), coal, $540 million (22 percent of total), industrial minerals, $429 million (17 percent of total), and precious metals, $310 million (13 percent of total). The growth in Utah's mineral valuation by industry segment for 1993 - 1995 is shown in figure 1. Prices rose sharply for base metals (copper, molybdenum, and magnesium) in 1995 while coal and precious metals showed slight improvement. Industrial mineral prices increased modestly for some commodities and declined for other commodities.
