Book Using Time Separation of Signals to Obtain Independent Proton and Antiproton Beam Position Measurements Around the Tevatron

Download or read book Using Time Separation of Signals to Obtain Independent Proton and Antiproton Beam Position Measurements Around the Tevatron written by R. Webber and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Independent position measurement of the counter-circulating proton and antiproton beams in the Tevatron, never supported by the original Tevatron Beam Position Monitor (BPM) system, presents a challenge to upgrading that system. This paper discusses the possibilities and complications of using time separation of proton and antiproton signals at the numerous BPM locations and for the dynamic Tevatron operating conditions. Results of measurements using one such method are presented.

Book Simultaneous Position Measurements of Protons and Anti protons in the Tevatron

Download or read book Simultaneous Position Measurements of Protons and Anti protons in the Tevatron written by R. Webber and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fermilab is nearing completion of an upgrade to the electronics of the Beam Position Monitor (BPM) system that measures the transverse position of the beams inside the Tevatron collider. A new feature in the upgraded system is the ability, when both protons and anti-protons are present in the Tevatron, to make simultaneous measurements of the closed orbit position of both beam species. This paper will present one of the methods for achieving the simultaneous measurement and will present results from commissioning data, which demonstrate that the system achieves its requirements.

Book Antiproton Yield Diagnostics for the Tevatron I Debuncher

Download or read book Antiproton Yield Diagnostics for the Tevatron I Debuncher written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During start-up of the CERN AA, many hours of machine experiments went into the study and optimization of antiproton yields. Those involved in the commissioning programme experienced the difficulty of tuning a new machine to accept a low-intensity full-aperture beam. The antiproton yield could only be obtained by integrating a slow Schottky scan of the beam on the injection orbit, normalized with respect to primary beam intensity by a charge transformer just in front of the production target. A precise yield measurement took about five minutes. At high yields this method permitted measurements to within a few percent. The slowness of the multi-parameter yield optimization, starting from low yields where the measurement errors were often as large as the gains to be made, cannot be over emphasized. In the Tevatron I Debuncher the antiproton yields should be substantially higher than at the AA and, given a Schottky pick-up of sufficient sensitivity, the situation looks more promising. At the AA we have resolved some of our difficulties by improving the charge transformer signal, speeding up the Schottky scan and adding instrumentation to use the signals from pions, muons and electrons injected along with the antiprotons. Low yields, e.g. at reduced aperture, are now measured using beam scrapers in conjunction with counters calibrated against the Schottky pick-up at high intensities. The latter is itself calibrated by the circulating beam current transformer at even higher intenSities, usually with protons in reverse polarity mode. Based on the AA experience we outline the techniques that could be used for the following measurements and procedures at the Debuncher: (1) antiproton yield (number of antiprotons circulating in the Debuncher per incident proton) versus the machine apertures 6X, 6y, and 6p, (2) yield versus phase space coordinates downstream from the production target, (3) use of other secondary particle fluxes, (4) optimization of full-aperture yield at the start of and during antiproton accumulation.

Book Using the TEVATRON Beam Position Monitor System to Investigate Transverse Phase Space

Download or read book Using the TEVATRON Beam Position Monitor System to Investigate Transverse Phase Space written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transverse phase space trajectories can be measured by using the TEVATRON beam position monitor in the standard turn by turn operation mode if a coherent betratron oscillation is excited by a dipole kick. The measurement of phase space coordinates is influenced by incoherent and coherent synchrotron oscillations and incoherent betatron oscillations. In order to investigate phase space trajectories in detail, all these effects must be understood quantitatively and if possible the measured data must be corrected. In this report the measuring and correction procedures will be investigated and the first measurements will be discussed.

Book Bunch by bunch Detection of Coherent Transverse Modes from Digitized Single bpm Signals in the Tevatron

Download or read book Bunch by bunch Detection of Coherent Transverse Modes from Digitized Single bpm Signals in the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A system was developed for bunch-by-bunch detection of transverse proton and antiproton coherent oscillations based on the signal from a single beam-position monitor (BPM) located in a region of the ring with large amplitude functions. The signal is digitized over a large number of turns and Fourier-analyzed offline with a dedicated algorithm. To enhance the signal, the beam is excited with band-limited noise for about one second, and this was shown not to significantly affect the circulating beams even at high luminosity. The system is used to measure betatron tunes of individual bunches and to study beam-beam effects. In particular, it is one of the main diagnostic tools in an ongoing study of nonlinear beam-beam compensation studies with Gaussian electron lenses. We present the design and operation of this tool, together with results obtained with proton and antiproton bunches.

Book Longitudinal Dynamics and Tomography in the Tevatron

Download or read book Longitudinal Dynamics and Tomography in the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivated by the desire to understand the longitudinal effects of beam-beam forces, we study the longitudinal dynamics of protons and anti-protons at injection and top energy in the Tevatron. Multi-turn data of the longitudinal profiles are captured to reveal information about frequencies of oscillation, and changes in the bunch distributions. Tomographic reconstruction is used to create phase space maps which are subsequently used to find the momentum distributions. Changes in these distributions for both proton and anti-proton beams are also followed through the operational cycle. We report on the details of interesting dynamics and some unexpected findings.

Book Antiproton Production for Tevatron

Download or read book Antiproton Production for Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Needs to improve the Fermilab Pbar Source for the Tevatron Upgrade and discrepancies in predictions of the antiproton yields have forced us to develop the production model based on the modern data and to incorporate this model to the current version of MARS10 code. The inclusive scheme of this code with the use of statistical weights allows the production of antiprotons to be enhanced within the phase space region of interest, which is extremely effective for optimization of Pbar Source parameters and for developing of such an idea as a beam sweeping system. Antiproton production model included in the modified version of our Monte Carlo program MARS10M for the inclusive simulation of hadronic cascades, as for other particles throughout the program, is based on a factorization approach for hadron-nucleus differential cross-section. To describe antiproton inclusive spectra in pp-collisions a phenomenological model has been used modified in the low-Pt region. The antiproton production in pion-nucleon interactions is described in the frame of our simple phenomenological model based on the modern data. In describing of the of antiproton production cross-sections ratio in hadron-nucleus and hadron-nucleon collisions the ideas of soft hadronization of color strings and all the present experimental data have been used. Some comparisons of our model with experimental data are presented in the wide intervals of initial momenta, antiproton kinematical variables and nuclei. In all the cases the agreement is pretty good what gives us an assurance in the consequent studies carried out for the Fermilab Pbar Source. The results of such study are presented in this paper.

Book Design for Antiproton Collection and Beam Transport in the Fermilab Tevatron I Project

Download or read book Design for Antiproton Collection and Beam Transport in the Fermilab Tevatron I Project written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 120-GeV protons from the Main Ring will be used to produce 8-GeV antiprotons. A pulsed lithium lens collects and matches the antiprotons to a beam line for injection into the Debuncher Ring. The anti p beam has a transverse emittance of 20.pi. mm-mr and a deltap/p = +-2.0%. The beam line consists of a clean-up section with vertical emittance selection, two long dispersion free sections, a bend and a vertical injector. Antiprotons with a transverse emittance of 2.pi. mm-mr and deltap/p = +-7.0 x 10−4 are transported in the reverse direction, bypassing the target area, and along the 120-GeV proton transport line for reverse injection in the Main Ring.

Book Measuring the Orbit Length of the Tevatron

Download or read book Measuring the Orbit Length of the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The orbit length in the Tevatron was measured when coasting beam was first obtained. The method was time-of-flight, using a vernier phase comparison between beam pickup signals and a synthesizer sine wave. Some effort was spent making a stable phase detector so that it would not be a limiting factor. The results exhibited a repeatability of a few Hz at 53 MHz, corresponding to a mean radius measurement to 0.1 mm. 5 refs., 4 figs.

Book Optimization of the Helical Orbits in the Tevatron

Download or read book Optimization of the Helical Orbits in the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To avoid multiple head-on collisions the proton and antiproton beams in the Tevatron move along separate helical orbits created by 7 horizontal and 8 vertical electrostatic separators. Still the residual long-range beam-beam interactions can adversely affect particle motion at all stages from injection to collision. With increased intensity of the beams it became necessary to modify the orbits in order to mitigate the beam-beam effect on both antiprotons and protons. This report summarizes the work done on optimization of the Tevatron helical orbits, outlines the applied criteria and presents the achieved results.
