Book Using the Google Places API and Google Trends Data to Develop High Frequency Indicators of Economic Activity

Download or read book Using the Google Places API and Google Trends Data to Develop High Frequency Indicators of Economic Activity written by Mr. Paul A Austin and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the pandemic heigthened policymakers’ demand for more frequent and timely indicators to assess economic activities, traditional data collection and compilation methods to produce official indicators are falling short—triggering stronger interest in real time data to provide early signals of turning points in economic activity. In this paper, we examine how data extracted from the Google Places API and Google Trends can be used to develop high frequency indicators aligned to the statistical concepts, classifications, and definitions used in producing official measures. The approach is illustrated by use of Google data-derived indicators that predict well the GDP trajectories of selected countries during the early stage of COVID-19. To this end, we developed a methodological toolkit for national compilers interested in using Google data to enhance the timeliness and frequency of economic indicators.

Book Panel Nowcasting for Countries Whose Quarterly GDPs are Unavailable

Download or read book Panel Nowcasting for Countries Whose Quarterly GDPs are Unavailable written by Omer Faruk Akbal and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2023-08-04 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quarterly GDP statistics facilitate timely economic assessment, but the availability of such data are limited for more than 60 developing economies, including about 20 countries in sub-Saharan Africa as well as more than two-thirds of fragile and conflict-affected states. To address this limited data availablity, this paper proposes a panel approach that utilizes a statistical relationship estimated from countries where data are available, to estimate quarterly GDP statistics for countries that do not publish such statistics by leveraging the indicators readily available for many countries. This framework demonstrates potential, especially when applied for similar country groups, and could provide valuable real-time insights into economic conditions supported by empirical evidence.

Book In Search of Information

Download or read book In Search of Information written by Futoshi Narita and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timely data availability is a long-standing challenge in policy-making and analysis for low-income developing countries. This paper explores the use of Google Trends' data to narrow such information gaps and finds that online search frequencies about a country significantly correlate with macroeconomic variables (e.g., real GDP, inflation, capital flows), conditional on other covariates. The correlation with real GDP is stronger than that of nighttime lights, whereas the opposite is found for emerging market economies. The search frequencies also improve out-of-sample forecasting performance albeit slightly, demonstrating their potential to facilitate timely assessments of economic conditions in low-income developing countries.

Book Constructing Daily Economic Sentiment Indices Based on Google Trends

Download or read book Constructing Daily Economic Sentiment Indices Based on Google Trends written by Vera Eichenauer and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Google Trends have become a popular data source for social science research. We show that for small countries or sub-national regions like U.S. states, underlying sampling noise in Google Trends can be substantial. The data may therefore be unreliable for time series analysis and is furthermore frequency-inconsistent: daily data differs from weekly or monthly data. We provide a novel sampling technique along with the R-package trendecon in order to generate stable daily Google search results that are consistent with weekly and monthly queries of Google Trends. We use this new approach to construct long and consistent daily economic indices for the (mainly) German-speaking countries Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The resulting indices are significantly correlated with traditional leading indicators, with the advantage that they are available much earlier.

Book Knitting Multi Annual High Frequency Google Trends to Predict Inflation and Consumption

Download or read book Knitting Multi Annual High Frequency Google Trends to Predict Inflation and Consumption written by Johannes Bleher and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We propose a regression-based algorithm that allows to construct arbitrarily many comparable, multi-annual, consistent time series on monthly, weekly, daily, hourly and minute-by-minute search volume indices based on the scattered data obtained from Google Trends. The accuracy of the algorithm is illustrated using old datasets from Google that have been used previously in the literature. We use our algorithm to construct an index of prices searched online (IPSO). Out-of-sample, the IPSO improves monthly inflation and consumption forecasts for the US and the Euro Area. In-sample it is contemporaneously correlated with US consumption, when controlling for seasonality, and Granger causes US inflation on a monthly frequency.

Book Nowcasting Monthly GDP with Big Data

Download or read book Nowcasting Monthly GDP with Big Data written by Tommaso Proietti and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gross domestic product (GDP) is the most comprehensive and authoritative measure of economic activity. The macroeconomic literature has focused on nowcasting and forecasting this measure at the monthly frequency, using related high frequency indicators. We address the issue of estimating monthly gross domestic product using a large dimensional set of monthly indicators, by pooling the disaggregate estimates arising from simple and feasible bivariate models that consider one indicator at a time in conjunction to GDP. Our base model handles mixed frequency data and ragged-edge data structure with any pattern of missingness. Our methodology enables to distill the common component of the available economic indicators, so that the monthly GDP estimates arise from the projection of the quarterly figures on the space spanned by the common component. The weights used for the combination reflect the ability to nowcast quarterly GDP and are obtained as a function of the regularized estimator of the high-dimensional covariance matrix of the nowcasting errors. A recursive nowcasting and forecasting experiment illustrates that the optimal weights adapt to the information set available in real time and vary according to the phase of the business cycle.
