Book excerpt: This study examined the student self-assessment usage and perceptions of participants who were music teachers in Connecticut. The theoretical framework was Bandura's construct of self-regulation, stemming from social cognitive theory. How, when, and why music teachers use student self-assessment in their daily practice was examined. Because there is little baseline information on current or best practice in the field, this exploratory study provides an important view on self-assessment in the state of Connecticut. This study used a mixed-methods approach, a follow-up explanation design that emphasized the quantitative data, using interviews to add more depth to the survey results. The survey was validated through an expert panel and pilot group and then given to music teachers in the state in a convenience sample (n = 234). Quantitative results were examined using ANOVA analysis and paired samples t tests as well as frequency analysis. Qualitative interviews were a purposeful sample of teachers who use self-assessment with high frequency from a mixture of subjects and grade levels (n = 5) and results were closed-coded. Connecticut music teachers who participated the survey overwhelmingly use self-assessment (95%), and they have positive views of its impact on students (82%). Teachers were split on whether self-assessment should be used formatively or summatively, and generally found that student calibration trended towards what is shown in the literature: higher achieving students grade themselves lower, lower achieving students grade themselves higher, while students in the middle tend to be more accurate. Teachers interviewed believed strongly that practice, a culture of self-assessment, and a structured direct instruction in how to self-assess and calibrate can correct these issues and bring about positive student outcomes. Chi-square analysis revealed differences in how teachers used certain self-assessments by grade-level. There were significant differences between levels in usage of reflecting writing, behavioral self-assessments, and physical self-assessments. It was also found that there were significant differences in the timing of when teachers gave these self-assessments between grade levels when using post formal performance self-assessment and also within daily classroom usage of self-assessment.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of differentiated music on classroom behaviors and attitudes of middle school band members. Special, differentiated music, was written to find out if the level of class participation (students on task) would increase with its use. The differentiated music consisted of three parts from which each player could choose; a simple two note harmony, melody, and an advanced counterpoint. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade band classes were included in the study. A series of eight class sessions, fifteen minutes in length from each grade, were videotaped over a period of four weeks on successive Tuesdays and Thursdays. Baseline and treatment sessions were established with the baseline consisting of the use of typical band method material, and the treatment including the use of differentiated music. Each grade level ran a different length of baseline and treatment time periods. Data were collected to measure the percent of students on task for baseline and treatment for each grade level. Other areas evaluated included the amount of class time spent playing, teaching, and dealing with discipline and interruptions. Teacher comments were measured, as was survey information from the students regarding their enjoyment levels and self assessment. The use of the differentiated music did not show an increase in the number of students participating as had been expected. Rather the discipline of the students became the prominent issue. Correlations showed that as negative behaviors increased, attitude toward the class and personal achievement decreased. Future research in this area should be done in a setting and through instruction where student attention and relatively good discipline is maintained. If the classroom discipline problem area could be reduced or eliminated, comparison of differentiated music versus other types of materials might yield different results.

Book excerpt: Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) are responsible at the local NHS level for the statutory "duty of care", largely through implementing clinical governance. The concept of clinical governance aims to improve continuously the overall standard of clinical care; reduce variations in outcomes of, and access to, services; and ensure that local decisions are based on the most up to date evidence of what is known to be effective. The key principles of clinical governance are: a coherent approach to quality improvement, clear lines of accountability for clinical quality systems and effective processes for identifying and managing risk and addressing poor performance. Clinical governance, implemented effectively, can provide PCT Chief Executives with assurance that healthcare, whether provided directly or commissioned from other providers, is both safe and of good quality. This report finds that the organisational structures and processes for clinical governance have largely been put in place at PCT level. But progress in implementing the different components of clinical governance varies both within and between PCTs. More needs to be done to provide assurance about the performance of General Practitioners and the systems which protect the safety of patients. Key features of those PCTs that can demonstrate consistent improvements in quality include effective clinical leadership, maintaining the capacity to deliver services, ensuring the quality of the patient experience and improving services based on lessons from complaints and patient safety incidents. The higher performing PCTs are characterised by: availability and accessibility of information to support evidence-based medicine; all staff appraised against an agreed work and development programme; service users involved in service development; clear action plans developed in response to clinical risks; and underperformance by clinical staff addressed by clear management procedures.
