Book Writing Portfolios in the Classroom

Download or read book Writing Portfolios in the Classroom written by Robert Calfee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents chapters by researchers, practitioners, and policymakers who study the impact of classroom portfolios in the assessment of writing achievement by elementary and middle grade students. The focus throughout the volume is on the tension between classroom assessment and externally mandated testing. It presents the efforts of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to understand the impact of classroom portfolios for the assessment of writing achievement by elementary and middle grade students. Under the auspices of the Center for the Study of Writing, the editors conducted a national survey of exemplary portfolio projects, arranged for a series of "video visits," and held several working conferences. The result of this work is a broad-ranging tale: the aspirations of teachers and administrators to move the machinery of schooling in the direction of more authentic and engaging tasks, the puzzlement of students when they realize that the assignments are real and that the teacher may not have a "right answer" in mind, and the tensions between ivory-tower ideas and everyday classroom practice. Divided into four sections, this research volume: * provides a historical perspective, develops the conceptual framework that serves as a background for many activities described throughout, and discusses numerous practical issues that confront today's researchers and practitioners; * views the phenomenon of writing portfolios through a variety of broadview lenses such as teacher enthusiasm, student reflection, assessment tension, the portfolio as metaphor, and the locus of control; * conveys important conceptual issues with a balance toward pragmatics; and * offers unique insights from the perspective of one individual who serves as scholar, researcher, and teacher.

Book Digital Portfolios in the Classroom

Download or read book Digital Portfolios in the Classroom written by Matt Renwick and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment is messy. Day-to-day, in-the-moment assessments not only reveal information that drives future instruction but also offer a comprehensive picture of students’ abilities and dispositions toward learning. As teachers, we might know what this looks and feels like, yet it can be hard to put into action—hence the messiness. Say hello to digital student portfolios—dynamic, digital collections of authentic information from different media, in many forms, and with multiple purposes. Using digital portfolios to capture student thinking and progress allows us to better see our students as readers, writers, and learners—and help students see themselves in the same way! Matt Renwick’s Digital Portfolios in the Classroom is a guide to help teachers sort through, capture, and make sense of the messiness associated with assessment. By shining a spotlight on three types of student portfolios—performance, process, and progress—and how they can be used to assess student work, Renwick helps educators navigate the maze of digital tools and implement the results to drive instruction.

She also discusses using portfolios for key purposes: learning, curriculum development and assessment, research, and staff development. Book An Introduction to Using Portfolios in the Classroom

Download or read book An Introduction to Using Portfolios in the Classroom written by Charlotte Danielson and published by Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development. This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is a useful resource for educators who would like to begin using portfolios in the classroom. The three major types of portfolios are working portfolios (collections of work in progress), display portfolios (also called showcase or best works), and assessment portfolios. These types are distinct in theory, but tend to overlap in practice. Once the purpose of the portfolio has been determined, the steps in the portfolio development process are: (1) collection; (2) selection; (3) reflection; and (4) projection. Projection, in the portfolio process, means looking ahead and setting goals for the future. Portfolios are best used in the classroom when they are used as a stimulus for students to produce imaginative and creative work, and when students are encouraged to analyze their own progress and to produce answers to open-ended questions. There are many logistical challenges to the use of portfolios, and it is essential not to undermine their instructional benefits by using them prematurely for high-stakes assessment. Many of the assessment tasks of portfolios can be achieved through well-designed performance tasks. It is the collection and reflection aspects of portfolios that make them such a valuable assessment tool. Some practical suggestions are offered for portfolio management. Book Going Gradeless Grades 6 12

Download or read book Going Gradeless Grades 6 12 written by Elise Burns and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Grade reform and standards-based grading (SBG) is a hotly debated issue in education. As one high school administrator puts it, "Traditional letter grading is probably the biggest elephant in the room in regard to school reform. We start [grading] at a young age, and it becomes all about accumulating points, and it's not about the learning anymore." (Dan Kelley, principal of Smithfield High School, Rhode Island). When students can focus less on the score and more on the learning, great things happen. SBG is even more challenging in high school. In this book, the authors share their districts' successes moving to alternate assessment methods that promote learning rather than solely achievement. The proponents of grade reform highlight the arbitrary nature of grades, the undue stress experienced by some learners, and the potential interference in the process of learning. On the other hand, opponents reference the lack of accountability and a shift away from content knowledge that is perceived in many alternate assessment models. This book outlines how to remove the negative impacts of grades while still maintaining a high level of accountability. While the majority of other books in this space provide a rationale for why the shift is necessary, these authors provide the classroom teacher's perspective and concrete examples of how these approaches can be developed and applied. They provide sample assessments, student work samples, an accountability checklist, a sample of their rubrics, and a review of our collected data"--

Book The Portfolio Project

Download or read book The Portfolio Project written by Terry Underwood and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study, in research-based narrative form, of one middle school's implementation of a new portfolio assessment plan in response to statewide policy changes in California. The book highlights the interactions of state, district, and local forces as teachers work to implement a portfolio-assessment plan that collects student work and evaluates it systematically. It examines a portfolio-assessment project that views student work through three progressive lenses: warm, value free; cool, analytical; and hard, critical. The plot of the book traverses a 15-year period in California during which assessment drove instruction across the state, often in unexamined and contradictory ways, always in powerful ways. The book traces the ebb and flow of a variety of assessment philosophies located in living rooms, classrooms, principals' offices, district headquarters, and in downtown Sacramento (the state capital)--a variety of philosophies coming and going that left behind fixed, predictable histories of conflict in classrooms. Its story appears to have parallels in the recent history of schools all over the United States. Chapters in the book are: (1) "Washers, Dryers, and School Reformers"; (2) "The Portfolio-Assessment System as an Innovation at Charles Ruff"; (3) "Portfolios in Review"; (4) "The Seeds of Change in California, 1983-1994"; (5) "Ruff Unified School District"; (6) "Inside the Middle (School)"; (7) "Ruff Instruction"; (8) "Ruff Students and Their Portfolios"; and (9) "Conclusions and Implications." Contains an Epilogue, an Appendix giving the research method, and an extensive list of works cited. (NKA)
