Book Handbook of Multicultural Mental Health

Download or read book Handbook of Multicultural Mental Health written by Thema Bryant-Davis and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traumatic experiences may lead to multiple negative mental health consequences, including PTSD, depression, and suicidal ideation. Ethnically diverse people, particularly those who are impoverished, are at increased risk for various traumatic experiences such as intimate partner violence, sexual assault, community violence, and child abuse. While there have been a number of treatments that have evidenced significant reductions in symptoms of distress among trauma survivors, few of these approaches have acknowledged and investigated the role of culture in the trauma recovery process. There are however some promising practices and a few evidenced-based culturally appropriate interventions. This chapter will review current literature on treatment approaches for ethnically diverse survivors. There is a need for more attention to underserved trauma survivors, including but not limited to ethnically diverse survivors.

Book Working with South Asian Indian Women Exposed to Domestic Violence in the United States

Download or read book Working with South Asian Indian Women Exposed to Domestic Violence in the United States written by Rajinder K. Basra and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic violence (DV) affects people of all race, culture, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, and educational levels. In addition, it can happen to heterosexual or same-sex intimate partners who are married, cohabitating, or dating. According to various findings, DV is the single major cause of injury to women, exceeding rapes, muggings, and auto accidents combined. In regards to violence against women i.e., DV, there are many commonalities amongst U.S. and South Asian Indian (SAI) women as well as women from other collectivist cultures. However, there are also very clear differences as well. These differences are disregarded in major studies on DV. Furthermore, the studies conducted are predominately on the Caucasian population, followed by African American and the Latino population. Findings from these popular studies, which may consist of members from minority groups, are then applied to men and women belonging to various cultural groups such as the Asian community. With very little studies conducted on the Asian population to begin with, and further merging the Asian groups together based on collectivist idealism or other similarities, reveals that there is no consideration to the diverse cultural norms within the various groups. The diverse cultural norms used to socialize individuals can become significant barriers to leaving a DV relationship, as well as receiving the appropriate help from American mental health providers. This study proposes to better equip mental health professionals when working with SAI women by shedding light on many traditions and cultural norms that keep women subordinate to men, and cements patriarchy which this study believes is the root and cause of DV. With the SAI community growing rapidly in the USA, this study examines how therapists can best approach the treatment of DV within this specific community as well as DV victims in the general population. Keywords: domestic violence, intimate partner violence, cycle of abuse, gender socialization, patriarchy, treating South Asian Indian women, dowry, arranged marriage, wife burning

Book Rethinking Social Work Practice with Multicultural Communities

Download or read book Rethinking Social Work Practice with Multicultural Communities written by Yolanda C. Padilla and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With research showing that clients from diverse racial and ethnic groups disproportionately experience barriers in their interactions with social services and that providers recognize the need to be better prepared to work with these groups, this book invites us to rethink current approaches to social work practice with multicultural communities. We begin with a synthesis of the current evidence on the provision of care to multicultural communities that provides an in-depth look at both client and provider experiences. The following chapters offer tangible, research-based approaches to engaging with multicultural clients and reveal often unrecognized problems with current models of social work practice. A unique compilation of rigorous qualitative, experimental, and community-based studies demonstrate the effectiveness of culturally grounded interventions and identify the specific factors associated with positive outcomes. Areas covered include disability, marriage and couple relationship problems, domestic violence, and mental illness within Latinx, African American, First Nations, and South Asian communities. As the authors in this book show, the stories of multicultural communities are narratives of unprecedented resourcefulness and reinvention. Yet, social work underutilizes rich family and community cultural resources. By not facilitating their involvement, social service systems compromise these vital resources which social services cannot replace. In arguing that we need to expand professional boundaries to encompass indigenous practices, family and extended kin, and therapeutic relationships that make sense to different cultural groups, this book will be of interest to those studying the ways in which social work practice can be improved to better suit the needs of a racially and ethnically diverse population. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic & Cultural Diversity in Social Work.

Book Samvedna Shakti

Download or read book Samvedna Shakti written by Rajwinder Mangar and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic violence within the South Asian community in the United States is on the rise, and has been a largely ignored social problem by community leaders. The dynamics of South Asian culture, the system of patriarchy, and gender role socialization process greatly impact the experiences of South Asian woman within the marital institution, and serve to keep them trapped in abusive situations. Many of the services currently available to South Asian Women's Organizations across the US are aimed at assisting women with immediate crisis, such as removing themselves from an abusive relationship, and locating a safe shelter. A structured empowerment program was lacking within the community. The following project is a group psychotherapy program development for South Asian domestic violence survivors. The development was guided by a thorough review of the literature and a needs assessment, conducted with five South Asian professionals. Samvedna Shakti is a 20-session, culturally grounded empowerment program based on Narrative Therapy. Each woman will have an opportunity to critically examine her culture, gender roles and expectations, culturally ideologies, and the ways in which she has been oppressed by patriarchy. It is hoped that sharing their narratives and examining their values will enable women to feel more empowered, and to make lasting changes as they re-author their lives and embrace new role models. Limitations and challenges of the present project and ideas for future research are included.

Book Body Evidence

Download or read book Body Evidence written by Shamita Das Dasgupta and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When South Asians immigrated to the United States in great numbers in the 1970s, they were passionately driven to achieve economic stability and socialize the next generation to retain the traditions of their home culture. During these years, the immigrant community went to great lengths to project an impeccable public image by denying the existence of social problems such as domestic violence, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, mental illness, racism, and intergenerational conflict. It was not until recently that activist groups have worked to bring these issues out into the open. In Body Evidence, more than twenty scholars and public health professionals uncover the unique challenges faced by victims of violence in intimate spaces . . . within families, communities and trusted relationships in South Asian American communities. Topics include cultural obsession with women's chastity and virginity; the continued silence surrounding intimate violence among women who identify themselves as lesbian, bisexual, or transgender; the consequences of refusing marriage proposals or failing to meet dowry demands; and, ultimately, the ways in which the United States courts often confuse and exacerbate the plights of these women.

Chapters focus on African Americans, Native Americans, Latinas, Asian and Pacific Island communities, persons with disabilities, immigrants and refugees, women in later life, LGBT survivors, and military families. In their introduction, they provide a thorough overview of intersectionality, culturally competent practice, and domestic violence and basic practice strategies, such as universal screening, risk assessment, and safety planning. They follow with collaborative chapters on specific populations demonstrating the value of generalist social work practice, including developing respectful relationships that define issues from the survivor's perspective; collecting and assessing data; setting goals and contracting; identifying culturally specific interventions; implementing culturally appropriate courses of action; participating in community-level strategies; and advocating for improved policies and funding at local, state, and federal levels.
