Book Using Multi Modal Education in a Public Health System to Increase Rates of Cervical Cancer Screening

Download or read book Using Multi Modal Education in a Public Health System to Increase Rates of Cervical Cancer Screening written by Christina Nardi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Papanicolaou (Pap) screening has been implemented since the 1950’s, and is linked to decreased rates of cervical cancer, national screening rates are still below the national target screening rate. In Contra Costa County (CCC), the current cervical cancer screening rate is 50.92% (Contra Costa Health Services [CCHS], 2016a). This is far below the national goal of 93% and the first benchmark of 54.33% needed in order to receive state funding under the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) Medi-Cal 2020 waiver. The Medi-Cal 2020 waiver has a 5-year Public Health Incentives and Redesign in Medi-Cal (PRIME) program requiring participating health systems to complete projects that improve population health, such as increasing cancer screening rates. CCHS needs to increase screening rates in order to receive funding from DHCS. In this paper, the author of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project discusses the design and implementation of an evidence-based cervical cancer screening toolkit to increase cervical cancer screening rates. The toolkit includes PowerPoint about the PRIME program and cervical cancer screening guidelines for Public Health Clinic Services (PHCS) staff, a pocket reference for cervical cancer screening, and a patient handout. During the two months following implementation of the toolkit, cervical cancer screenings for the PHCS pilot group increased when compared to the same time the prior year. The toolkit helped educate providers and patients, meeting the goal of increasing staff and patient knowledge about cervical cancer screening. Overall, the toolkit is a cost effective way to assist the efforts to increase cervical cancer screening rates and obtain Medi-Cal funding.

Book Cervical Cancer Screening Education

Download or read book Cervical Cancer Screening Education written by Ayano Itoh and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States. A low education level and socioeconomic level are the commonality among women with cervical cancer. The disease affects Latina and African American women the most. Cervical cancer screening is one of the key preventive methods in decreasing cervical cancer rates as a cure rate is high with early detection. The project was conducted in an underserved community with a high population of African Americans and Latinos in Los Angeles, California. EBP Framework: An evidence-based practice model used for the project was "Model for Change to Evidence-Based Practice" by Rosswurm and Larrabee. The model guided the project to improve cervical cancer screening rates. Methods: The project objective included improving the number of cervical cancer screenings among wimen ages between 35 to 44-year-old. Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions approved the project through the Institutional Review Board and determined the project was not human subject research. A convenience sample of nurse practitioners (n=7) was selected and educated on cervical cancer screening and poster reminders within the clinic. The provider's confidence level and knowledge level were assessed using pre- and post- assessments for each. The outcomes were assessed using a chart review of four weeks during pre- and post-intervention. Findings/Results: The number of cervical cancer screenings, the providers' confidence levels, and knowledge levels were assessed during pre- and post-intervention phases. The outcomes suggested that the provider education and poster reminder with the use of the EBP model increased cervical cancer screening rates, the providers' confidence and knowledge levels. Conclusion/Recommendations: The project's outcomes suggested an increase in cervical cancer rates, the providers' knowledge and confidence level on cervical cancer, and the financial benefit of the increased cervical cancer screening rates. The clinic decided to continue using the poster reminders and possibly modify the poster to increase patients' awareness. The clinic is considered periodical provider education sessions.

Book An Evaluation of Differences in Motivations to Receive Cervical Cancer Screening and Follow up Care Between Black and White Women

Download or read book An Evaluation of Differences in Motivations to Receive Cervical Cancer Screening and Follow up Care Between Black and White Women written by Ashlee Nicole Sawyer and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Cervical cancer among Black women is a major individual and public health concern. Despite advancements in medical technology and policy, disparities in cervical cancer diagnosis and mortality still exist between White and Black women, with Black women having higher rates of diagnosis (10.0 vs 7.1 per 100,000) and mortality (4.1 vs 2.0 per 100,000). Previous studies have focused heavily on barriers to obtaining cervical cancer screening among Black women and efforts to improve screening rates. Despite speculation by researchers that gaps in receipt of quality follow-up care may contribute to disparities, its role in disparate mortality rates between Black and White women has yet to be formally studied. Purpose: The goals of the present research were to (1) assess differences in Pap screening rates and (2) rates of adherence to recommended follow-up care after abnormal Pap results between Black and White women, (3) evaluate how specific factors of the Health Belief Model (HBM) influence the decision-making process for obtaining Pap screening and (4) receiving recommended follow-up Pap care, and (5) evaluate the role of ethnic centrality as a factor in health decision-making. Results: Results indicated that HBM facets functioned similarly in predicting engagement in Pap screening and follow-up care, although there were differences in the influence of different facets by race. Ethnic centrality showed little applicable influence on adherence to follow-up care among Black women. An exploratory analysis revealed that doctor recommendation was the most influential factor predicting follow-up care use for both racial groups. Conclusion: The present study offers support for increased education and training on provider recommendation of appropriate follow-up care, as well as effective provider communication of results and services using messaging that appeals to the values and concerns of patients.

Book Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Control

Download or read book Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Control written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most women who die from cervical cancer, particularly in developing countries, are in the prime of their life. They may be raising children, caring for their family, and contributing to the social and economic life of their town or village. Their death is both a personal tragedy, and a sad and unnecessary loss to their family and their community. Unnecessary, because there is compelling evidence, as this Guide makes clear, that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively. Unfortunately, the majority of women in developing countries still do not have access to cervical cancer prevention programmes. The consequence is that, often, cervical cancer is not detected until it is too late to be cured. An urgent effort is required if this situation is to be corrected. This Guide is intended to help those responsible for providing services aimed at reducing the burden posed by cervical cancer for women, communities and health systems. It focuses on the knowledge and skills needed by health care providers, at different levels of care.

Book Cervical Cancer in Low income Settings

Download or read book Cervical Cancer in Low income Settings written by Elisabeth Vodicka and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cervical cancer is one of the most frequently occurring cancers among women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). While preventable if detected early, many women experience challenges accessing life-saving screening and treatment due to health systems inefficiencies, costs, perceptions of screening, and time required to seek care. Integration of cervical cancer screening into existing public health programs, such as screening women as they enter the health system for HIV treatment or bring their children to obtain routine immunizations, may increase screening coverage rates at low marginal costs. This dissertation aimed to evaluate the potential costs, cost-effectiveness, and budget impact of integrating cervical cancer screening into a routine childhood immunization clinic in Uganda and an HIV-treatment facility in Kenya. First, using primary facility-level data, a model-based analysis was conducted to estimate the individual level-costs of treatment for pre-cancerous lesions, cervical cancer, and cervical cancer palliative care in Kenya. Second, a Markov model was developed to assess the potential costeffectiveness of integrating screening programs into an HIV treatment clinic in Kenya and a routine childhood immunization clinic in Uganda. Third, a budget impact model estimated the size of the target population and potential uptake of screening, as well as the impact on the current health system, of each integration strategy. Study findings indicate that integrating cervical cancer screening into existing health systems in East Africa is likely to be cost-saving or cost-effective in terms of cost-per life year saved, compared to current strategies of nonintegrated screening. These findings provide decision-makers in Kenya, Uganda, and other similar LMICs with information on the costs and cost-effectiveness of innovative methods for increasing access to life-saving cervical cancer screening and treatment interventions.

Book Transforming Health and Social Education to Include a Greater Focus on Public Health Education in the Curriculum

This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now more than ever, an increased emphasis is needed on educational changes and innovations to effectively prepare health and social service professionals for 21st-century practice. Earlier work of the Lancet Independent Global Commission has been instrumental in validating the need for curricula change to include a focus on social determinants, public health priorities, and strategies to sustain healthy communities. The need to further strengthen the public health focus within health and social service education has been fuelled by the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing recognition of specific issues challenging society such as that highlighted within the technical report recently released by the World Health Organization recognizing Parkinson’s Disease as a public health issue. Each is an example of the need to prepare a future health and social service workforce well equipped in responding to major public health issues while contributing to global health and human wellbeing. The goal of this Research Topic is to provide additional evidence-based contributions to strengthen the public health focus in health and social service education. We aim to commission and publish a broad range of works including original research, case studies, pedogeological innovations, curriculum developments, program evaluations, and debate.

Book Integrating Social Care into the Delivery of Health Care

Download or read book Integrating Social Care into the Delivery of Health Care written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating Social Care into the Delivery of Health Care: Moving Upstream to Improve the Nation's Health was released in September 2019, before the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic in March 2020. Improving social conditions remains critical to improving health outcomes, and integrating social care into health care delivery is more relevant than ever in the context of the pandemic and increased strains placed on the U.S. health care system. The report and its related products ultimately aim to help improve health and health equity, during COVID-19 and beyond. The consistent and compelling evidence on how social determinants shape health has led to a growing recognition throughout the health care sector that improving health and health equity is likely to depend â€" at least in part â€" on mitigating adverse social determinants. This recognition has been bolstered by a shift in the health care sector towards value-based payment, which incentivizes improved health outcomes for persons and populations rather than service delivery alone. The combined result of these changes has been a growing emphasis on health care systems addressing patients' social risk factors and social needs with the aim of improving health outcomes. This may involve health care systems linking individual patients with government and community social services, but important questions need to be answered about when and how health care systems should integrate social care into their practices and what kinds of infrastructure are required to facilitate such activities. Integrating Social Care into the Delivery of Health Care: Moving Upstream to Improve the Nation's Health examines the potential for integrating services addressing social needs and the social determinants of health into the delivery of health care to achieve better health outcomes. This report assesses approaches to social care integration currently being taken by health care providers and systems, and new or emerging approaches and opportunities; current roles in such integration by different disciplines and organizations, and new or emerging roles and types of providers; and current and emerging efforts to design health care systems to improve the nation's health and reduce health inequities.
