Book Using Bibliotherapy to Support Children s Friendships with Peers with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Using Bibliotherapy to Support Children s Friendships with Peers with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project explored the use of Bibliotherapy to provide preschool-aged children a better understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Peer relationships are central to a child’s development by aiding them socially, emotionally, and cognitively and unfortunately for many children with ASD, relational skills are often challenging, allowing for some unique difficulties in meeting those demands in school environments. Bibliotherapy has provided a way to use literature to help children facilitate an understanding of difficult concepts and provide them with opportunities to explore emotions, thoughts and feelings. This provided a unique opportunity to teach typically developing children about a more difficult concept such as ASD with the goal of improving peer experiences for individuals with ASD. Based on Bibliotherapy guidelines and popular children’s stories, an illustrated book was created with the goal of encouraging kindness and fostering a better understanding of children with ASD amongst all of the children in the classroom. Input from two teachers supporting inclusion classrooms (children with ASD and typically developing children, together) was gathered before writing to inform the content of the book. These teachers as well as a parent of a child with ASD provided quantitative and qualitative feedback on an early draft of the story. The book was read on two occasions in an inclusion preschool classroom across three weeks. A running record observation was collected on students’ reaction to the book and their apparent understanding of the message. Overall, students appeared interested in the book and actively answered questions related to the message while the story was being read. Potential areas for improvement to increase students’ understanding and further application of Bibliotherapy for the purpose of supporting peer relationships for children with ASD are discussed.

Book The FRIEND Program for Creating Supportive Peer Networks for Students with Social Challenges including Autism

Download or read book The FRIEND Program for Creating Supportive Peer Networks for Students with Social Challenges including Autism written by Holly Sokol and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FRIEND is a social, communication and play-based program to help school-aged children with social challenges. All students deserve a positive school experience where they can reach their social and academic potential. However, this can prove difficult for students with challenges such as attention deficit, anxiety, or autism spectrum disorders, who may struggle daily with social situations. This manual provides everything educators need to support these students with their social skills in everyday situations, throughout their school years. This program is designed to help any student with social challenges, no matter how subtle. For students without social challenges, it teaches tolerance, acceptance and understanding. The characteristics of successful social skills programs are described, with an emphasis on how FRIEND implements them through three key components: the Peer Sensitivity Curriculum, the FRIEND Lunch Program and the FRIEND Playground Program. These can be implemented individually or in any combination as a comprehensive program. Parents and family are offered information on working together with schools and implementing FRIEND strategies at home and in the community. Emphasizing peer sensitivity, education and a supportive environment, FRIEND is for any educator wanting to create an inclusive and safe atmosphere for students to learn social skill-building strategies.

Book Who Needs Friends

Download or read book Who Needs Friends written by Laurie Leventhal-Belfer and published by . This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who Needs Friends?A Guide to The Friends Program:An intervention program that helps young children on the Autism Spectrum/ Asperger's Disorder and their Parents explore and expand their social world. For the past 15 years colleagues and graduate students have asked us if we have a handbook about our program that they could share with their trainees. Parents have also inquired about a handbook that they can share with family members and their children's teachers. So here it is, a reader friendly guidebook to The Friends Program. The program strives to replicate a preschool and elementary school setting to capture the challenges that these children experience at school, across social settings such as their home, and in after school activities. The program is unique in that the parents, experienced interpreters of their children's social world, attend every session. We learned early on that their observations and comments made during the parent's group provided the clinicians with insight that might otherwise take months to acquire. A parent immediately knew which movie or video their child was referring to during the table discussion. They understood why a child may look distressed at the start of a session or what they were eager to share in the group. The program runs on the academic calendar since we have learned that different issues arise at different times such as the opening of the school year, holidays, and tests. Our curriculum is not standardized but molds to fit the issues the children are currently raising, i.e., making new friends, keeping your cool, bullying, and collaboration. The goal of this program is to enhance a child's Social Communication, capacity for shared symbolic Play, understanding of Emotions and Emotional Regulation, verbal Communication and Sensory Regulation (SPECS). The book defines each area and elaborates on how these goals are addressed in different activity themes. Each activity has a theme, goal, and strategies that address the SPECS. The goal for the parents is to increase their understanding of their child, and provide a safe and supportive setting where they can openly share with the clinical facilitator and fellow parents the stages they travel as parents of children on the Autism Spectrum/ Asperger's Disorder. The journey involves stages of denial, anger and frustration, bargaining, sadness, advocacy, and acceptance. This journey does not travel a linear path but moves up and down in relationship to how their child is doing. The stages come to life with direct quotes from the parents along with a story written by a parent who was not aware of how we were going to present this process in our first book, Asperger's Disorder in Young Children (2004). Over time an increasing number of fathers are attending each session and that has provided a rich insight into the paths that couples travel. The group parents provide each other with ongoing support years after they leave the group, often sending us updates on the progress their child has made or their recent achievements as (for example) an Eagle Scout, in the martial arts, in the arts, or in their transition to college. The book contains the charts that we use in the group, a guide to children's books we use in our program, and a list of books for professionals and parents. Lastly we provide a review of our pilot outcome study, preliminary data, and a set of outcome measures. Nothing is more satisfying than watching a child who asked their parents and the staff at the start of the program, "who needs friends?", leave the program with a desire to maintain the friendships they made in the group and gradually expand their social world with a little nudge and lots of love from their parents.

Download or read book An Investigation of written by Mary Schlieder and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic rise in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is accompanied by a substantial increase in public school inclusion. A growing body of research supports the need for teachers proficient in evidence-based practices to support such students. One strategy involves using peer support networks like Circle of Friends (CoF) for ASD adolescents. A collective case study was used to investigate experiences of stakeholders relative to a CoF community. Four themes emerged from a cross-case analysis: the influence a CoF partnership initiative has on inclusion, social skills improvement, empowerment, and sense of wellbeing. For the purposes of this article, findings relative to inclusion are discussed. CoF fostered an attitude of peer acceptance for classmates with ASD and helped alleviate feelings of fear peers experienced toward ASD classmates. CoF peers developed empathy and understanding for the CoF target student, and those qualities extended to students outside the circles. CoF seemed to have fostered true social inclusion, altering traditional divisions between special education and typical education populations. Peer acceptance generalized outside the school setting, even in the absence of CoF adult facilitators, and fostered long-term, genuine friendships. Findings from the larger study led to the development of an interactive website to foster a virtual learning community to enhance this ongoing partnership. The website might promote a deeper understanding of peer support networks for improved social skills, increased school involvement, decreased isolation, and decreased bullying in youth with ASD, as well as a successful community agency-public school partnership model. An appendix presents the interview questions.

Book Learning About Friendship

Download or read book Learning About Friendship written by Kay Al-Ghani and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2011-05-15 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making friends can be a challenge for all children, but those with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) can struggle more than most. This collection of ten fully-illustrated stories explores friendship issues encountered by children with ASD aged four to eight and looks at how they can be overcome successfully. Key problem areas are addressed, including sharing, taking turns, being a tattletale, obsessions, winning and losing, jealousy, personal space, tact and diplomacy, and defining friendship. The lively and entertaining stories depersonalize issues, allowing children to see situations from the perspective of others and enabling them to recognize themselves in the characters. This opens the door to discussion, which in turn leads to useful insight and strategies they can practise and implement in the future. Each story has a separate introduction for adults which explains the main strategies within it. This book will be a valuable resource for all parents and teachers of children with ASD, along with their friends and families, and anybody else looking to help children on the spectrum to understand, make and maintain friendships.

Book Friends a Music Therapy Program to Promote Prosocial Behaviors in Neurotypical Children and Children with Autism

Download or read book Friends a Music Therapy Program to Promote Prosocial Behaviors in Neurotypical Children and Children with Autism written by John Heckel and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies have found that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a higher rate of loneliness than their neurotypical (NT) peers despite a desire to engage in social interactions with others (Deckers, Roelofs, & Muris,. 2017; Deckers, Roelofs, Muris, & Rinck, 2014). The lack of social interactions in children with ASD is a result of core features of the disorder, including difficulty perceiving and engaging in typical social interactions as well as in exhibiting prosocial behaviors (Adamek et al., 2008; American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Barlow & Durand, 2015). These challenges often make it difficult for children with ASD to create and maintain friendships or participate in meaningful social interactions which can result in feelings of loneliness in the individual with ASD and greater degrees of social vulnerability compared to their NT peers. Social vulnerability (the inability to handle adverse situations due to a lack of interpersonal resources) leads to higher rates of physical abuse, sexual abuse, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts in people with ASD compared to the general population (Fisher, Moskowitz, & Hodapp, 2013; Hedley, & Uljarevic, 2018; Hoover, & Kaufman, 2018; Jawaid, Riby, Owens, White, Tarar, & Schulz, 2012; Reiter, Bryen, & Shachar, 2007). Therefore, to reduce feelings of loneliness and social vulnerability, it is important to provide children with ASD the opportunity to engage in meaningful social interactions with other children. The purpose of this project was to create, develop, and implement the FRIENDS model, an inclusive group music making program which aims to improve interactions between children with ASD and their NT peers. FRIENDS is intended to improve interactions by providing an inclusive setting, encouraging prosocial behaviors, and teaching NT children how to interact with those with ASD. The FRIENDS model was created by the student clinician and informs the interventions provided to the children to promote prosocial interactions. As program implementation progressed, the student clinician evaluated the effectiveness of the music interventions and the FRIENDS model and made changes based on program data collected. Finally, two case studies were written, one on a participant with ASD and a second on a NT participant. These case studies were written to better understand and evaluate the effectiveness of the methods used for this program.

Book An Exploration of Joint Attention and Friendship in Preschool Children with Autism

Download or read book An Exploration of Joint Attention and Friendship in Preschool Children with Autism written by Ya-Chih Chang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children begin to show preferences for specific playmates as early as the first two years of life. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulty making friends, even in elementary and middle school. However, very little is known about earlier friendships in children with autism such as preschool friendships. The current study examined friendships in preschool children with autism and explored how joint attention contributes to these friendships in mainstreamed settings. The participants were 31 mainstreamed preschool children (ages 2-5) with ASD. Two 15-minute school observations were conducted for each participant to capture participants' interactions with peers and adults during free play. Friendship was defined by three criteria: the children must have 1) at least 50% of their social initiation attempts responded to, 2) at least one interval of joint engagement, and 3) at least one positive affective exchange (adapted from Howes, 1983). Using this definition for friendship, the results indicated that 20% of the sample had friendships at school. Children with friends were more likely than children without friends to be jointly engaged with their peers during free play, and they used higher joint attention skills. Additionally, the study also found that adults were using far more behavioral management skills than any other strategies within the classrooms. Future studies may want to examine the effects of early interventions and/or teacher training on the development of friendships in preschool children with ASD within the school setting.
