Book excerpt: A large portion of system breaches are caused by authentication failure either during the system login process or even in the post-authentication session, which is further related to the limitations associated with existing authentication approaches. Current authentication methods, whether proxy based or biometrics based, are hardly user-centric; and they either put burdens on users or endanger users' (biometric) security and privacy. In this research, we propose a biometrics based user-centric authentication approach. The main idea is to introduce a reference subject (RS) (for each system), securely fuse the user's biometrics with the RS, generate a BioCapsule (BC) (from the fused biometrics), and employ BCs for authentication. Such an approach is user-friendly, identity-bearing yet privacy-preserving, resilient, and revocable once a BC is compromised. It also supports "one-click sign on" across multiple systems by fusing the user's biometrics with a distinct RS on each system. Moreover, active and non-intrusive authentication can be automatically performed during the user's post-authentication on-line session. In this research, we also formally prove that the proposed secure fusion based BC approach is secure against various attacks and compare the new approach with existing biometrics based approaches. Extensive experiments show that the performance (i.e., authentication accuracy) of the new BC approach is comparable to existing typical biometric authentication approaches, and the new BC approach also possesses other desirable features such as diversity and revocability.

Within the last forty years face and speaker recognition have emerged as research topics. However, as recently as a decade ago, biometrics itself did not exist as an independent field. Each of the biometric-related topics grew out of different disciplines. For example, the study of fingerprints came from forensics and pattern recognition, speaker recognition evolved from signal processing, the beginnings of face recognition were in computer vision, and privacy concerns arose from the public policy arena. One of the challenges of any new field is to state what the core ideas are that define the field in order to provide a research agenda for the field and identify key research problems. Biometrics has been grappling with this challenge since the late 1990s. With the matu ration of biometrics, the separate biometrics areas are coalescing into the new discipline of biometrics. The establishment of biometrics as a recognized field of inquiry allows the research community to identify problems that are common to biometrics in general. It is this identification of common problems that will define biometrics as a field and allow for broad advancement.

Book excerpt: Biometric authentication is the process of establishing an individual's identity based on measurable characteristics of their anatomy, physiology or behavior. Biometrics do not share many of the limitations of traditional authentication mechanisms, as the characteristics used for biometric authentication cannot be lost, forgotten or easily replicated. Despite these advantages, there are unresolved problems with the use and acceptability of biometrics and the technology has not seen the strong uptake that many predicted. There is a significant literature discussing the implications of biometric technology use, though much of this work is theoretical in nature and there is comparatively little empirically grounded work with a focus on the biometric user experience. This thesis presents research investigating biometric authentication from a user-centric perspective. The principal aims of this research were to deepen our understanding of the usability and acceptability of biometric authentication and use this knowledge to improve design. A series of controlled evaluations are presented, where biometric systems and different aspects of system design were investigated. To understand wider implementation issues, a field trial of a biometric system in a real-world environment was also carried out. A second strand of research focused on how biometrics are perceived and both survey and interview approaches were used to explore this issue. In general the empirical work can be characterized by a trend of structured, quantitative methodologies leading into less-structured approaches as contextual and experiential aspects of system use were investigated. A framework for the biometric user experience is presented based on this work. The framework is used to structure the design guidelines and knowledge emerging from this work. A methodology for the user-centric evaluation of biometrics is also proposed. The results from this project further our understanding of usable system design, but biometrics have proven to be an emotive technology and implementation remains a complex issue.
