Book Use of Soil Fumigants to Control Spread of Fomes Annosus

Download or read book Use of Soil Fumigants to Control Spread of Fomes Annosus written by David R. Houston and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2The root rot caused by the fungus Fomes annosus is a serious threat to coniferous plantations throughout the North Temperate Zone. It is especially prevalent in plantations that have been thinned; and it commonly spreads through the roots from diseased trees to healthy news. In 1962-67 we conducted a series of experiments to provide preliminary information for testing the hypothesis; that a continuous band or zone of roots rendered unsuitable for invasion by F. annosus will prevent the underground spread of this fungus from diseased to healthy trees.S3.

Book Investment Analyses of Stand Improvement and Reforestation Opportunities in Appalachian Forests

Download or read book Investment Analyses of Stand Improvement and Reforestation Opportunities in Appalachian Forests written by Owen W. Herrick and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2In a study carried out on the George Washington National Forest, 72 of the existing 143 site-stand condition classes were designates as candidates for timber-stand-improvement or conversion projects. But which projects are worth undertaking, and which should receive priority? These are decisions that confront program administrators and forest managers alike. To help them in this we have made investment analyses of the 19 most prevalent (modal) project classes, which together encompass almost 124 thousand acres of this Forest in Virginia and West Virginia. By providing a basis for rating and comparing opportunities, these appraisals suggest what kinds of projects to favor in planning an efficient program for stand improvement and stand conversion.S3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fungus Heterobasidion annosumis, in economic terms, the most important causal agent of disease and of yield loss in coniferous trees in northern temperate regions. This is the first book which brings together and summarizes the considerable amount of knowledge which has been gathered about all aspects of this disease. It has been prepared and published with support from the European Union, under the Agriculture and Agro- Industrial Research (AAIR) program. Drawing on over 2,000 research papers and books published from the early nineteenth century to the present day, the book covers topics which include the history, detection, biology, taxonomy and distribution of H. annosum. It provides the latest information on infection, host resistance, the biochemistry of the host-parasite interaction, molecular and genetic regulation of the host response and methods of control. It concludes with a series of case studies from Europe and North America. This book is an indispensable source of information for all those involved in the management of coniferous forests and plantations wishing to reduce the impact of this disease on yields. It should also become the accepted text for students of forestry and plant pathology studying H. annosum, and an invaluable reference manual for scientists researching this and other fungal tree diseases.
