Book excerpt: Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is widely used for inventory control, tool and material tracking, and other similar applications where line-of-sight optical bar codes are inconvenient or impractical. Several applications of RFID technology to pavements are evaluated in this report: tracking of placement of truckloads of hot mix asphalt (HMA) within the pavement, tracking of placement of truckloads of Portland cement concrete (PCC) within the pavement, real-time measurement of pavement temperature versus depth and time during intelligent compaction, and early detection of reflection cracking in overlays. RFID tracking of HMA placement was the most successful application and the one with potential for immediate commercial implementation. RFID tracking of PCC placement was unsuccessful, at least with the RFID systems evaluated in this study; the high dielectric constant of the hydrated cement paste severely attenuates the RFID signals. Real-time measurement of pavement temperatures with depth and time during intelligent compaction shows promise but further work is required to develop reader software/hardware and RFID tags with more reliable and faster response rates. Laboratory and limited field evaluation of an RFID-based sensor for early detection of reflection cracks in HMA overlays also shows promise, but additional development work and field trials are required. Guidelines for integration of material property data from construction and pavement performance data during service via RFID-assisted geolocation are also provided. The necessary steps required to integrate RFID-tagged material property and pavement management data are outlined in generic terms. Implementation details will depend on the materials and pavement systems used by each individual agency.

However, the vast expanse of road systems quite increases the complexity of manhole identifications when implementing maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) activities. Hence, an emerging method for finding manholes beneath pavements is needed. In this study, radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is used to identify manholes beneath pavements. RFID tags with cement blocks were buried in dense-grade asphalt concrete at different depths in a metal mold and then were identified using RFID in the laboratory. This study developed an easy-to-use program on an RFID reader to identify RFID tags on-site. The RFID tags attached to covers of manholes beneath pavements can be easily monitored by the program. Augmented reality (AR) technology can aid users in manipulating virtual objects in real environments. This study developed a mobile manhole monitoring system (MMS) and a web-based MMS. The location and information of manholes can be transmitted from the web-based MMS through the Internet and be shown on the mobile MMS based on the AR technology. The time and costs of manhole identification can be significantly decreased and pavement maintenance activities may be implemented in a more timely fashion by using RFID and AR technologies.

When the ground begins to thaw, ice melts, leaving the ground under the roads softer. Large trucks carring heavy loads can cause permanent damage to roads when the roads are in a soft state. For this reason, a seasonal load restriction (SLR) policy is implemented to restrict truck loads during road thaw period. Consequently, SLR imposition results in a lack of profit from trucking and related industry. Currently, no cheap real-time method exists for road monitoring to allow trucks to change loads based on real-time circumstances. The proposed solution to this problem is to implement an affordable system for monitoring road temperatures and moisture using radio frequency identification (RFID) sensors. To successfully place and remove SLRs, the RFID sensors need to detect the current condition of the pavement and relay the condition to a collector, or RFID reader. The current condition of the pavement is measured using external temperature and moisture sensors. An onboard microcontroller unit (MCU) gathers the measured readings and wirelessly transmits the readings to a RFID reader above the surface of the road. Collected data is used by the Sate Department of Transportation (DOT) to properly decide the real time road conditions on a daily or hourly basis, effectively allowing the DOT to place or remove restrictions as necessary.

It uses the temperature of concrete to determine a maturity index that can then be used to determine strength of concrete. However, monitoring the concrete temperature using thermocouples brings up a wiring issue, which is not advisable in an equipment and human intensive area like a construction site. One of the ways to get around this wiring issue is to use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, which is capable of transmitting information wirelessly. Previous research implemented using ultra high frequency RFID tags embedded in fresh concrete found that water could be the impediment for transmitting RFID signal from within concrete during early stages of curing. From literature it was found that lower the frequency, better the chances of the wave penetrating water. The objective of the research was to figure out whether the frequency of RFID tags has any relationship with the readability of RFID tags embedded in fresh concrete. For this investigation, low frequency, high frequency, and ultra high frequency RFID tags were tested within fresh concrete to see any difference between tags in terms of transmitting information. This experiment was carried out in a controlled space to reduce the number of variables affecting the experiment outcome. The low frequency, high frequency, and ultra high frequency RFID tags were placed within 2 in x 3 in x 2 in wooden formwork at a depth of 4 in, 8 in, and 12 in. Ready mix concrete was poured into the formwork and 3 concrete cubes were cast with the tags embedded within them. Readers that could be connected to a laptop were used to monitor and collect the time at which these RFID tags can be detected. The test showed that the RFID signals from the low frequency tags at all depths were detected as soon as concrete was poured. The Ultra High Frequency tags placed at the 4" level could be detected 15 minutes after concrete was poured. The UHF tags at the 8" level could be detected after 30 minutes. The UHF tags at the 12" level took on an average 2 hours to be detected from the vicinity of the formwork. The greater the depth at which the ultra high frequency tag was buried the longer it took for it to be detected. The high frequency tags could be detected only at the 4" level. The reason the performance of the HF card degraded in concrete could be because it uses an aluminum foil antenna which is more susceptible to the environment changing the relative permeability. A copper wire antenna could have fared better in this condition, increasing the chances of detecting the tag. Moreover a passive tag was used. The read range and chances of detection could have been increased had an active tag been used. The power of the reader that was used was also very less which might have contributed to the tag not being detected. Among the tags that were used in the experiment it was found that low frequency tags was the tag that could be detected the earliest after concrete was poured into the forms. However, the maximum read range of the tag observed in the experiment was 20" which is too small a distance to be used on an actual construction site.
