Book Use of Honey Mesquite Prosopis Glandulosa to Enhance Sustainability of Southwestern Rangelands

Download or read book Use of Honey Mesquite Prosopis Glandulosa to Enhance Sustainability of Southwestern Rangelands written by Piedad Esther Mayagoitia González and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa Torr.) is a potential forage resource due to its high protein content. However, consumption by ruminants is limited by secondary compounds. Our main hypothesis was that honey mesquite could represent a viable livestock foraging resource in the Chihuahuan Desert during periods of low forage quality. The objective of the first study was to determine if feeding activated charcoal could increase intake of honey mesquite leaves by lambs. Twenty wether lambs (36.6 kg ± 0.6 SE) were randomly assigned to four levels (0, 0.33., 0.66 and 1 g · kg−1 of BW) charcoal supplement. No differences (P = 0.52) in the intake of mesquite leaves were detected among supplement levels. However, consumption of mesquite leaves varied greatly among lambs, ranging from 1.24 to 6.25% of the diet. For the second study, phenological changes in the nutrient content of mesquite leaves, flowers and pods were assessed at 2-week intervals during 2012. Crude protein (CP) content of leaves decreased ( P 0.05) from 25.4 to 10.8%, while acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) increased (P

Book Mechanisms of Range Expansion and Removal of Mesquite in Desert Grasslands of the Southwestern United States

This book was released on 2001 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 150 years, two species of mesquite trees in the Southwestern United States have become increasingly common in what formerly was desert grassland. These trees have spread from nearby watercourses onto relatively xeric upland areas, decreasing rangeland grass production. Management attempts to limit or reverse this spread have been largely unsuccessful. This paper reviews studies regarding mesquite natural history and management strategies, emphasizing studies published during the past decade. Mesquite possess a deep root system and are capable of fixing atmospheric N, rendering them capable of accessing resources unavailable to other plants in open rangeland. Their seeds, which remain viable for decades, have a hard exocarp and require scarification before germination. Consumption by cattle provides a means of scarification and seed dispersal, and is a major factor contributing to the spread of mesquite in open rangelands. Increases in atmospheric CO2 and winter precipitation during the past century also contribute to enhanced seed germination. Removal techniques have included herbicides, prescribed burning, grazing reduction, and mechanical removal. For increased effectiveness of these techniques, management goals must be clearly articulated; these goals include complete removal, no removal, and limited removal. Of these, limited removal appears the most feasible, using an initial herbicide application followed by periodic prescribed burning.

Book Rangeland Biomass Utilization

Download or read book Rangeland Biomass Utilization written by Charles Hoitt and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a descriptive study of Mesquite (Prosopis spp.) as a useful crop in bio-energy and agroforestry and landowner interest in the utilization of mesquite. Mesquite historically had been seen as a useful plant until sometime after the 1980's attitudes shifted to it being a noxious invader of arid and semi-arid grasslands of the Southwestern United States. These attitudes combined with lack of knowledge by landowners in the Southern United States of native biomass and wood based biomass feedstocks for energy production lead to landowners being unlikely or neutral about the utilization of mesquite. As the United States government wants to shift to more sustainable "green energy", mesquite is poised to be an energy crop in Texas and with the world population ever expanding poised to be a source of energy and protein for both animal and human consumption.

Book Rangeland Systems

Download or read book Rangeland Systems written by David D. Briske and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-12 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. This book provides an unprecedented synthesis of the current status of scientific and management knowledge regarding global rangelands and the major challenges that confront them. It has been organized around three major themes. The first summarizes the conceptual advances that have occurred in the rangeland profession. The second addresses the implications of these conceptual advances to management and policy. The third assesses several major challenges confronting global rangelands in the 21st century. This book will compliment applied range management textbooks by describing the conceptual foundation on which the rangeland profession is based. It has been written to be accessible to a broad audience, including ecosystem managers, educators, students and policy makers. The content is founded on the collective experience, knowledge and commitment of 80 authors who have worked in rangelands throughout the world. Their collective contributions indicate that a more comprehensive framework is necessary to address the complex challenges confronting global rangelands. Rangelands represent adaptive social-ecological systems, in which societal values, organizations and capacities are of equal importance to, and interact with, those of ecological processes. A more comprehensive framework for rangeland systems may enable management agencies, and educational, research and policy making organizations to more effectively assess complex problems and develop appropriate solutions.
