Book Naval Forces Defense Capabilities Against Chemical and Biological Warfare Threats

Download or read book Naval Forces Defense Capabilities Against Chemical and Biological Warfare Threats written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-08-03 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. naval forces must be prepared to respond to a broad array of threats. Of increasing importance are those from chemical and biological warfare (CW and BW). To help review its current state of preparedness, the Chief of Naval Operations asked the National Research Council (NRC) to assess the U.S. Navy's defense capabilities against CW and BW threats. In particular to what extent are they being developed to enable naval forces to sense and analyze quickly the presence of chemical and biological agents, withstand or avoid exposure to such agents, deal with contamination under a broad spectrum of operational conditions, and over what period will these capabilities be realized. This report presents the results of that assessment. It provides an overview of the potential threats, and an evaluation of the Navy's operations, non-medical programs, and medical countermeasures designed to confront those threats. The report also presents a series of general and specific findings and recommendations based on these assessments.

Book Chemical and Biological Warfare A Manageable Problem

Download or read book Chemical and Biological Warfare A Manageable Problem written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is about CBW and CS weapons effects on U.S. military operations. Areas researched include: the foundation of CBW concern, practical problems (limitations) with CB weapon delivery, and hypothetical CBW combat scenarios (Desert Storm 1991 and Desert Storm 2003). The intent is to provide combat forces with a logical and realistic framework to accurately assess the CB threat enabling a proper balance of force protection and mission accomplishment. The United States military is well-prepared to conduct operations in the CBW environment and CB weapons will have minimal impact on combat effectiveness. Contrary to what some would have us believe, effective dispersal of CB agents is not as simple as filling a crop-duster with sarin gas or anthrax spores and spraying troops in the open. Besides the negative political aspects, there are significant practical difficulties incorporating CBW into a useful military course of action. History shows that CB weapons have had the greatest impact on unprotected, poorly trained, and ill disciplined ground forces. Even so, the CB contribution has been small (or even negligible) to the overall outcome of the conflict.

Book A Chemical and Biological Warfare Threat

Download or read book A Chemical and Biological Warfare Threat written by Donald C. Hickman and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Water and the systems that supply it are national critical infrstructures [and are] particularly vulnerable to chemical or biological attack. Air Force water supplies are particularly assailable. This study identifies critical points, which if vulnerable could be targeted with chemical or biological weapons to functionally kill or neutralize USAF operations ... The author proposes four thrusts to improve force protection: comprehensive threat and risk assessment, focused water system vulnerability assessments, re-evaluation of the CW/BW conventional wisdom, and a review of Civil Engineering water system outsourcing and management practices."

Book Strategies to Protect the Health of Deployed U S Forces

Download or read book Strategies to Protect the Health of Deployed U S Forces written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Gulf War veterans have expressed concerns that their postdeployment medical symptoms could have been caused by hazardous exposures or other deployment-related factors. Potential exposure to a broad range of CB and other harmful agents was not unique to Gulf operations. Hazardous exposures have been a component of all military operations in this century. Nevertheless, the Gulf War deployment focused national attention on the potential, but uncertain, relationship between the presence of CB agents in theater and symptoms reported by military personnel. Particular attention has been given to the potential long-term health effects of low-level exposures to CB agents. In the spring of 1996, Deputy Secretary of Defense John White met with the leadership of the National Academies to discuss the DoD's continuing efforts to improve protection of military personnel from adverse health effects during deployments in hostile environments. Although many lessons learned from previous assessments of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm have been reported, prospective analyses are still needed. Strategies to Protect the Health of Deployed U.S. Forces: Force Protection and Decontamination, which addresses the issues of physical protection and decontamination, is one of four initial reports that will be submitted in response to that request. Specifically, this report includes a review and evaluation of the following areas: the adequacy of current protective equipment and protective measures (as well as equipment in development) the efficacy of current and proposed methods for decontaminating personnel and equipment after exposures to CB agents current policies, doctrine, and training to protect and decontaminate personnel and equipment in future deployments (i.e., major regional conflicts [MRCs], lesser regional conflicts [LRCs], and operations other than war [OOTWs]) the impact of equipment and procedures on unit effectiveness and other human performance factors current and projected military capabilities to provide emergency response
