This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IUTAM Symposium on Probabilistic Methods in the Mechanics of Solids and Structures, dedicated to the memory of Waloddi Weibull, was held in Stockholm, Sweden, June 19-21, 1984, on the initiative of the Swedish National Committee for Mech anics and the Aeronautical Research Institute of Sweden, FFA. The purpose of the symposium was to bring together mathema ticians that develop the theory of stochastic processes and methods for reliability analysis, with engineers that apply these theories and methods to model loads, strengths and structures for the advancement of structural safety. Waloddi Weibull was a pioneer in this field with his many publi cations from the thirties until his death in 1979. He also took an active part in the formation of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics during the forties, and subsequently initiated foundation of the Swedish National Committee for Mechanics, through which Sweden joined IUTAM as a member. 116 participants from 21 countries attended the symposium, and 55 invited papers were presented in 7 scientific sessions.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the Solid Mechanics Program at the Office of Naval Research (ONR), our primary mission is to establish a basic research program which addresses the funda mental issues in solid mechanics where a clear scientific understanding is lacking. Our approach involves first identifying the various scales at which material and structural response and failure occur. Within each level of behavior we address the basic mechanical phenomena for which a clear physical description is not available. ONR's program emphasizes experimental research to identify and quantify the interacting behavior and response mechanisms. Theoretical and computational approaches are developed to explain the details of the physical processes and to establish the technology necessary to control the thermomechanical behavior of materials and structures. Within the Department of Defense, it is a natural evolution that all new systems must generally operate in more demanding environments than the systems they replace. Thus, structural designers are pushed towards lighter weight, precision structures utilizing new materials. In such an environment, structural design mar gins simultaneously shrink and become more critical. Such trends make it essential that a well founded scientific base for the nondestructive detection and assessment of subcritical flaws in structural materials and structures exist. Within the ONR Solid Mechanics Program we are interested in both the identification of flaws and assessment of their degree of criticality.

Download or read book Advances in Fracture Research written by K. Salama and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 3063 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Held every four years, the International Congress on Fracture is the premier international forum for the exchange of ideas between scientists and engineers involved in producing and using materials resistant to fracture and fatigue. This major six-volume work which forms the proceedings of the Seventh International Congress on Fracture therefore provides the most comprehensive account available of the current status of research into fracture and fatigue, and the application of this knowledge to the design, fabrication and operation of materials and structures. As such, it will be an essential reference for materials scientists and mechanical, structural, aeronautical and design engineers with an interest in fracture and its prevention.
Download or read book Durability Methods Development written by S. D. Manning and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical evaluation of three analytical approaches is made to determine their applicability and/or potential for analytically assuring airframe durability during the design stage. A suitable analytical format for quantifying durability damage is developed based on U.S. Air Force durability design specifications and durability analysis needs. Air Force durability requirements are briefly reviewed and discussed. Three potential approaches for durability damage analysis are conceptually evaluated and discussed: (1) Conventional Fatigue Analysis (Palmgren-Miner Rule); (2) Deterministic Crack Growth Approach; and (3) Probabilistic Crack Growth Approach. The resulting evaluation provides the prerequisite work needed to develop a durability analysis methodology. The probabilistic crack growth approach is found to be the most promising for developing the durability analysis methodology under Phase I.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of the 80's there has been an increasing need for analytic and numerical techniques, based on a thorough understanding of microstructural processes, that express in a manner suitable for practicing engineers the reliability of components and structures that are being subjected to degradation situations. Such situations fall within the framework offracture mechanics, fatigue, corrosion fatigue and pitting corrosion. Luckily, such techniques are now being developed and it was felt timely to combine in one volume reports by the leaders in this field who are currently making great strides towards solving these problems. Hence the idea of this monograph was born and I am pleased to be associated both with it and the contributors whose chapters are included in this volume. A very large part of the credit for this monograph must go to the authors who have taken time out from their busy schedules to prepare their submissions. They have all worked diligently over the last few months in order to get their manuscripts to me on time and I sincerely thank them for their help throughout the preparation of this volume.

Download or read book Stochastic Approach to Fatigue written by K. Sobczyk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of engineering materials is a very complicated process that is difficult to accurately describe and predict. It is no doubt nowadays, that a fatigue of real materials should be regarded as a random phenomenon and analyzed by use of stochastic theory. This volume of the lectures sumarises the latest achievements in stochastic modelling and analysis of fatigue. The lectures cover the following important aspects of modern analysis of fatigue: methodology of stochastic modelling of fatigue, tools for characterization of random fatigue loads, physical and mechanical aspects of random fatigue, basic stochastic models for fatigue and the estimation of fatigue reliability of specific structural systems.
Download or read book Aircraft Fatigue Management written by Lorrie Molent and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue occurs under cyclic loading and can significantly degrade the operational capability and safety of metallic aircraft components and structures. This book provides summaries of some metallic aircraft structural integrity issues, innovative but established examples of maintaining operational capability—airworthiness, and assessments of safe in-service fatigue lives. These topics are based on a through-life fatigue management philosophy that ensures safe and continued operation, including during life extensions that are almost inevitably required. This philosophy is underpinned by observations of the behaviour of fatigue cracks in actual structures subjected to realistic service loading conditions. The book includes topics like aircraft design requirements, individual aircraft fatigue loads monitoring, airframe fatigue testing, sources of fatigue-nucleating discontinuities, and prediction of fatigue crack growth from these discontinuities. All these aspects contribute to discussing methods of assuring the structural integrity and operational capability of realistically cracked structures. The book also discusses the exponential behaviour of lead or dominant cracks—those leading to first failure—and the practical significance of differences between fatigue fracture topographies produced under constant amplitude and variable amplitude loading. The book can be a valuable reference for researchers and professionals interested in aircraft fatigue management and allied fields.
