Whose gets to live a ‘good’ life, and whose ideas of morality, propriety and ‘good’ prevail? What is the connection between the ‘good’ and the ‘just’ in urban life? Rather than philosophizing the ‘good’ and proper life in cities, the book considers what happens when urban conflicts and urban futures are carried out as conflicts over the good and proper life in cities. It offers an understanding of how ethical discourses, ideals and values are harmonized with material interests of different groups, taking up cases studies about environmental protection, co-housing schemes, political protest, heritage preservation, participatory planning, collaborative art production, and other topics from different eras and parts of the globe. This book offers multidisciplinary insights, ethnographic research and conceptual tools and resources to explore and better understand such conflicts. It questions the ways in which urban ethics draw on tacit moral economies of urban life and the ways in which such moral economies become explicit, political and programmatic. This statement asks for a new approach to Urban Planning, more attentive to regenerating existing urban fabrics than extending them. Within this context, Mass Housing Estates and their renovation become an issue of great relevance. Being one of the 20th century's genuine forms of urban growth, their accelerated and very explicit obsolescence demands profound reflection on strategies and interventions. This book shows some descriptions, thoughts and tentative designs on this particular urban form. Opened to an international scope, most of the presented materials and writings are referred to Barcelona and its MHE, since it is an exceptional case study in this matter, as it is in many other fields related to urbanism. The large number and diversity of housing estates that were developed throughout the last century set the framework for the analysis of three challenges that MHE renewal will face in the future: guarantee of basic living conditions; urbanity provision and metropolitan integration. "The relevance of MHEs was the opportunity to build residential neighbourhoods with a much greater po-tential than traditional ones. Some specific cases have shown us how to design residential environments and others show us precisely the opposite, how not to. MHE shouldn't have been located in isolated sites with an excessive insistence on a certain type of architec-ture. Today the centre of our metropolitan reality continues to be Barcelona: it is a key element, extremely important. But let us look with a renewed attention at the metropolitan context. The baricentre of this metro-politan Barcelona is certainly not located in Ciutadella, but somewhere in Collserola. It is in this change of scale, it is in understanding the real city, that we will find the key to redefine MHE as an integral part of a much broader and more complex system than the former periphery where they were once built. Now we have the capacity and sufficient perspective to discern what was a mistake from the positive assets we can recover from these territories"

Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of the challenges that cities in Latin America and Asia are facing regarding the preservation of their tangible and intangible heritage. It argues that urban heritage has a value that transcends the mere object’s value, constituting a crucial source of identity for urban inhabitants. The same is true for the urban intangible values and practices that are often associated with places or buildings. The empirical research is based on case studies of Kathmandu in Nepal, Yogyakarta in Indonesia and Recife in Brazil; three cities that still comprise core areas with a high percentage of historic fabric and distinctive cultural expressions. The comparative study of the three areas reveals the similarities and differences of urban conservation policies, past and present upgrading strategies in the core areas, and the importance of tangible and intangible heritage. All three cities demonstrate that urban heritage, habits and beliefs are still of importance to the population. While there are significant differences in the kind and level of protection the respective legal system provides, partly uncontrolled urban dynamics pose a threat to all of them. The text is based on a PhD thesis submitted to the Institute of Geography, University of Innsbruck, Austria.

Towns were crucial sites of music-making. Kevorkian explores how performance was integrated into and indispensable to everyday routines, celebrations such as weddings, and political culture. Training and funding likewise emerged from and were integrated into urban life. Ordinary artisans, students, and musical tower guards as well as powerful city councilors contributed to the production and reception of music. This book illuminates the processes at play in fascinating ways. Challenging ideas of "elite" and "popular" culture, Kevorkian examines five central and southern German towns—Augsburg, Munich, Erfurt, Gotha, and Leipzig—to reconstruct a vibrant urban musical culture held in common by townspeople of all ranks. Outdoor acoustic communication, often hovering between musical and nonmusical sound, was essential to the functioning of these towns. As Kevorkian shows, that sonic communication was linked to the music and musicians heard in homes, taverns, and churches. Early modern urban environments and dynamics produced both the giants of the Baroque era, such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann, and the music that townspeople heard daily.
