Book Urbanisation and Its Trends in India A Case of Gujarat

Download or read book Urbanisation and Its Trends in India A Case of Gujarat written by Vijay Jariwala and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urbanisation is considered to be an index of transformation from traditional rural economy to modern industrial one. It is a long term process. Urbanisation is a product of demographic explosion and poverty induced rural-urban migration. It has been observed that the pace of urbanisation has always faster than the pace of population growth. The rapid growth trends are observed, particularly in a metropolitan city in India and also in Gujarat. Gujarat has been one of the most urbanised states in the country with 46 percent population resides in urban areas. Due to faster growth of the economy of state, urbanisation leads to widening gap between demand and supply of essential goods, services and infrastructure. This entire problem makes Gujarat's cities and town polluted, unlivable, inefficient and vulnerable to disasters. Policy relates to proper urban planning where city planning will consist of operational, developmental and restorative planning. There is the need to balance the process of urbanisation with proper development center in an integrated manner; people should get maximum social economic benefit rather than financial gain only.

The concept of peri-urbanization is grabbing the attention of urban planners and policymakers globally. To understand the dynamics of the peri-urban region it is crucial to examine multiple rural and urban characteristics. This book studies major changes in population, land and development with the integration of remotely sensed data and census data for 615 peri-urban villages surrounding Ahmedabad city of India. The chapters of the book are designed to cover key aspects of peri-urban change with geospatial methods. Book Urbanisation Citizenship and Conflict in India

Download or read book Urbanisation Citizenship and Conflict in India written by Tommaso Bobbio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urbanisation is rapidly changing the geographic and social landscape of India, and indeed Asia as a whole. Issues of collective violence, urban poverty and discrimination become crucial factors in the redefinition of citizenship not only in legal terms, but also in a cultural and socio-economic dimension. While Indian cities are becoming the centres of a culture of exclusion against vulnerable social groups, a long-term perspective is essential to understand the patterns that shaped the space, politics, economy and culture of contemporary metropolises. This book takes a critical, longer-term view of India’s economic transition. The idea that urban growth goes hand in hand with the modernisation of the country does not account for the fact that increasingly higher portions of the urban population are comprised of lower-income groups, casual labourers and slum dwellers. Using the case study of Ahmedabad, this book investigates the history of city and of its people over the twentieth century. It analyses the contrasting relationship between urban authorities and the inhabitants of Ahmedabad and examines instances of antagonism and negotiation – amongst people, groups and between the people and the public authority – that have continuously shaped, transformed and redefined life in the city. This book offers an important tool for understanding the bigger context of the conflicts, the social and cultural issues that accompanied the broader process of urbanisation in contemporary India. It will be of interest to scholars of Urban History, studies of collective violence and South Asian Studies.

Book excerpt: Negative Impacts Of Liberalization Policies Were Recognized Soon After Launching Of These Policies And The Need For Ameliorating Measures Was Recognized To Give It A Human Face. The Processes Of Globalization And Economic Liberalization Ushered In The Early Nineties Have Contributed To The Acceleration Of Economic Growth. But They Also Appeared To Have Resulted In Widening The Gap Between The Rich And The Poor. They Also Seem To Be Contributing To Further Regional Inequality, Family Level Food Insecurity, And Unemployment. Liberalization Has Resulted In A Greater Degree Of Skewness In The Pattern Of Development, Perhaps Leading To The Marginalization Of Some States In The Overall Dispensation. The Problems And Constraints Associated With Agriculture Sector Seem To Have Worsened Under The Reforms Regime.

Download or read book Gujarat Under Modi written by Christophe Jaffrelot and published by Hurst Publishers. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012 Narendra Modi became the first Hindu nationalist politician thrice elected to lead a state of the Indian Union, his stewardship as Chief Minister of Gujarat being the longest in that state’s history. Modi and his BJP supporters explained his achievement by pointing to economic growth under his leadership, yet detractors point out that Modi has been more business-friendly than market-friendly—to the benefit of large industrial corporations, and at the cost of great social polarisation. In 2002, an anti-Muslim pogrom of unparalleled ferocity occurred in Gujarat, leading to the biggest number of Muslim deaths since Partition. The state’s Hindu majority immediately rallied around Modi. No serious riot has occurred in Gujarat since, but polarisation was key to Modi’s strategy there, and he has deployed that strategy again and again since he became Prime Minister of India in 2014. For Modi has cultivated a communal image. A marketing genius, his messaging combines the politics of Hindutva with economic modernisation, to the clear appreciation of Gujarat’s middle class. Christophe Jaffrelot’s revealing book shows how Modi’s Gujarat served as the laboratory of Modi’s India, not only in terms of Hindu majoritarianism and national populism, but also of caste and class politics.

Book Rural Transformation in the Post Liberalization Period in Gujarat

Download or read book Rural Transformation in the Post Liberalization Period in Gujarat written by Niti Mehta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the pattern of non-farm development at the national level and identifies the correlates and determinants of occupational diversification for the major states. It is one of the few studies that unravels the dynamic processes associated with growth and development at the sub-national level; wherein it elucidates changes in rural employment pattern and its implications for urban growth. The book fills a crucial gap in current research, notably, an understanding of conditions that enable large villages to assume an urban character. By providing micro-level study of census towns to capture the nuances of the dynamic situation in the countryside, the book would offer useful insights and provide reference material on the social and economic impacts of urban growth, thereby satisfying the needs of students, researchers and practitioners of regional economics, rural development, and sustainable urbanization. The book is the outcome of financial support received under the Research Programme Scheme of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi, India.
