Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite ongoing efforts to find alternatives, oil is still one of the most critical—and valuable—commodities on earth. This two-volume set provides extensive background information on key topics relating to oil, profiles countries that are major producers and consumers of oil, and examines relevant political issues. Aside from air and water, oil is perhaps the most valuable natural resource. Oil supplies the tremendous energy needs of the modern world. What exactly is "oil," where does it come from, how does it get consumed, and who is using it? This encyclopedia provides clear answers to these questions and more, offering students entries on the fundamentals of the oil industry and profiles of the countries that play a major role in oil production and consumption. Volume 1 presents topical entries on critical concepts, key terms, major oil spills and disasters, and important organizations and individuals relating to the oil industry. Entries define terms such as "barrel" and "reserve," cover incidents such as the BP oil spill, and explain the significance of organizations such as OPEC. The second volume spotlights specific countries that are major producers, consumers, exporters, and importers of oil, from the United States to Russia to Saudi Arabia to Venezuela. Each profile shows readers the importance of oil in that country through a brief background history, data on its oil usage or production, information about major trading partners, and an explanation of political issues.

Book Life in the Oil Fields

Download or read book Life in the Oil Fields written by Roger M. Olien and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been said about the great gushers, the notorious wildcatters, and the raucous boomtowns of oil field life, but the stories of the people who lived their lives in the shadow of the derrick have mainly gone untold. This book is a fascinating look at the everyday life of oil field workers and their families, told through oral recollections and eighty photographs. The surviving culture of the oil patch has become perhaps more significant than the diminishing reserves remaining under the surface of the ground. It is a culture that reveals itself in the popular phrase: "You can take the Texan out of the oil field, but you can't take the oil field out of the Texan." As Texas changed from a rural to urban/industrial society, no group experienced this passage more vividly than oil field workers and their families. This book is a compelling chronicle of those times. -- from Book Jacket.

Book Contemporary Issues in Politics International Relations

Download or read book Contemporary Issues in Politics International Relations written by Nesrin Kenar and published by IJOPEC PUBLICATION. This book was released on 2021-12-26 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Conflict” is a phenomenon as old as human history. Although the actors and reasons have changed, conflicts have occurred in every period of history. In the pre-Cold War era, conflicts in the international system were experienced between states. The conflicts during the Cold War mainly were interstate conflicts arising from the rivalry between the two blocs. In this period, it was expected that the threat to the security of a state would come from outside the borders of the state and from other states. For this reason, all the regulations made by the League of Nations, which was established at the end of the First World War, and the United Nations, which was established after the Second World War, to protect international peace and security included the measures to be taken against the attack or threat of attack by one state against another state. However, the developments that took place right after the end of the Cold War confirmed that the risk of interstate conflict decreased, and new security threats emerged in this period. The conflicts that emerged in the post-Cold War period were separatist conflicts due to ethnic and religious reasons, such as the former Yugoslavia and Georgia, or intra-border conflicts that occurred for other reasons, such as in Syria. Upon the inadequacy of international organizations and international law to intervene in intra-border conflicts, the concept of "security" was redefined, and a transformation from the security of the state to the security of the individual took place. New security threats such as environmental security, human security, food security, terrorism, weapons of mass destruction and pandemics have been identified. One of the reasons for the decrease in conflicts between states in the post-Cold War period is that states mostly use "soft power" instead of military force in achieving their foreign policy goals. The structure of the international system is also a dynamic that affects conflicts. After the end of the bipolar system, the transformation of the international system is not yet complete. One of the most critical problems in today's world is the competition and struggle between states to become the future superpower. While the US wants the current status quo to continue, China is trying to change the status quo in its favour. The European Union is to become the dominant power in the international system after its transformation in the post-Cold War period.
