Book The Geology Mineral and Hydrocarbon Potential of Northern Yukon Territory and Northwestern District of Mackenzie

Download or read book The Geology Mineral and Hydrocarbon Potential of Northern Yukon Territory and Northwestern District of Mackenzie written by Donald Kring Norris and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the regional geology of the northern Yukon and north-western District of Mackenzie, based on original field work in the early 1960s and updated in light of more recent detailed investigations. After introductory chapters on the original reconnaissance survey, the physiographic setting of the study area, and the geological setting (tectonics, seismicity, tectonostratigraphic sequences), subsequent chapters describe the geology (including stratigraphy, paleontology, paleogeography, lithology, and tectonics, as applicable) of individual geological eras or periods from the Proterozoic to Tertiary. The following chapters cover the geology of the Beaufort Sea continental shelf; the White, Barn, and Campbell uplifts; the petrology of the northern Yukon intrusive suite; and the mineral and hydrocarbon potential of the study area. Includes a catalogue of stratigraphic sections and an index.

Book The Permian of Northern Pangea

Download or read book The Permian of Northern Pangea written by Peter A. Scholle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Permian was a remarkable time period. It represents the maximum stage of Pangean continental assembly, includes a major global climatic shift from glacial to nonglacial conditions (icehouse-greenhouse transition), and is ter minated by one of the most profound faunal/floral extinction events in the Earth's history. In addition, Permian oceans, although poorly understood, must have had some quite unique characteristics. Permian seas reached the most extreme values of carbon, sulfur, and strontium isotopic ratios ever achieved in Phanerozoic time, and the isotopic ratios of all three elements abruptly returned to more "normal" values at, or very close to, the Permo Triassic boundary. Finally, the Permian is marked by an abundance of important sedimentary mineral resources. It has large fossil fuel concentra tions (coal, oil, and natural gas), enormous phosphate reserves, and very extensive evaporite deposits, including gypsum, anhydrite, and halite, as well as a variety of potash salts. Study of the Permian has been hampered, however, by a number of factors. These include a scattered geologic literature (presented in a variety of languages), a confusing regional and global stratigraphic framework (based, in part, on inadequate type sections), and largely provincial, often poorly correlatable faunas. All have contributed to the sparsity and inadequacy of overviews of this critical geological interval. These two volumes attempt to bring together some of the widely scattered observations about these fascinating rocks, at least for the northern (predominantly nonglacial) parts of Pangea.

Book Upper Paleozoic Stratigraphy of the Eagle Plain Basin Yukon Territory

Download or read book Upper Paleozoic Stratigraphy of the Eagle Plain Basin Yukon Territory written by H. L. Martin and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upper Paleozoic strata in the southern part of the Eagle Plain Basin are termed the Imperial Formation of Late Devonian age, the unnamed shale unit of Devonian and Mississippian age, and the Hart River Formation of Late Mississippian (Chesteran) age. The latter is formally subdivided into the Birch, Canoe River, and Chance Sandstone Members. Both the Birch and Chance Sandstone Members are reservoir rocks where oil and gas have been discovered in commercial quantities. The hydrocarbons are present in non-argillaceous, conglomeratic sandstone whereas the intervening Canoe River Member is a siliceous shale in the southeast grading to a siliceous limestone in the central and western parts of the basin. The strata are believed to have been deposited in a deep water trough subparallel to the present-day Richardson Mountains which form the eastern border of the basin; turbidite flows are considered to be responsible for the formation of the conglomeratic sandstone.

Book Petroleum Resource Assessment of the Eagle Plain Basin Yukon Territory Canada

Download or read book Petroleum Resource Assessment of the Eagle Plain Basin Yukon Territory Canada written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to investigate the hydrocarbon resource potential of the Eagle Plain, northern Yukon. After an introduction on terminology & the resource assessment procedure, the report describes the regional stratigraphy, depositional setting, structural geology, and geochemistry. It also reviews the petroleum exploration history of the Plain and available seismic data. Hydrocarbon potential volumes are then derived using a series of Excel templates combined with the RISK set of programs. This assessment involved analyses of 12 conceptual plays (seven gas and five oil & gas), each of which includes a reservoir description and discussion of undiscovered potential. Finally, the total gas & petroleum resource potential is discussed.

Book Lower Paleozoic Stratigraphy of Northern Yukon Territory and Northwestern District of Mackenzie

Download or read book Lower Paleozoic Stratigraphy of Northern Yukon Territory and Northwestern District of Mackenzie written by D. W. Morrow and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies of the lower Palaeozoic in the Eagle Plain & Richardson Mountain area of north-west mainland Canada in the Yukon & Northwest Territories have dealt either with outcrop or surface sections, or with subsurface well sections, but did not integrate these data. This has led to the development of inconsistent stratigraphic nomenclatures and an inability to form a consistent sequence stratigraphic model for the lower Palaeozoic in this area. This bulletin presents a stratigraphic synthesis based on data from surface exposures in the mountains surrounding Eagle Plain and on subsurface borehole data from beneath Eagle Plain and from the interior plain bordering the east flank of the Richardson Mountains. An internally consistent stratigraphic framework is developed, including reaffirmation of some previous nomenclature, restriction to certain areas of others, and definition of new stratigraphic units. The positions of carbonate-to-shale transitions which commonly exert a strong control on structural evolution and on the occurrence of sedimentary mineral deposits & hydrocarbons are more accurately delineated. A detailed sedimentological analysis of the Ogilvie Formation, the most prospective lower Palaeozoic unit for the occurrence of hydrocarbon reservoirs, is also included, along with a map of thermal maturity at the top of the unit.
