  • Publisher : Geological Society of America
  • Release : 2010-01-01
  • ISBN : 081372466X
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book The Ordovician Earth System written by Stanley Charles Finney and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Ordovician period is a significant chapter in Earth's history that included the great Mid-Ordovician biodiversification event, the Hirnantian glaciation, and long-term greenhouse conditions. Ordovician rocks are widespread on most continents and the recent finalization of a modern chronostratigraphic classification of the Ordovician system now facilitates high-resolution correlations that allow for integrated multidisciplinary research. The diverse papers comprising this volume address orogenesis, paleogeography, climate modeling, sedimentation, biodiversity, and isotopic excursions; together they promote an integrated view of the Ordovician earth system."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How will patterns of human interaction with the earth's eco-system impact on biodiversity loss over the long term--not in the next ten or even fifty years, but on the vast temporal scale be dealt with by earth scientists? This volume brings together data from population biology, community ecology, comparative biology, and paleontology to answer this question.

Book The Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event

Download or read book The Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event written by Barry D. Webby and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-14 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the greatest evolutionary events in the history of life on Earth occurred during Early Paleozoic time. The first was the Cambrian explosion of skeletonized marine animals about 540 million years ago. The second was the "Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event," which is the focus of this book. During the 46-million-year Ordovician Period (489–443 m.y.), a bewildering array of adaptive radiations of "Paleozoic- and Modern-type" biotas appeared in marine habitats, the first animals (arthropods) walked on land, and the first non-vascular bryophyte-like plants (based on their cryptospore record) colonized terrestrial areas with damp environments. This book represents a compilation by a large team of Ordovician specialists from around the world, who have enthusiastically cooperated to produce this first globally orientated, internationally sponsored IGCP (International Geological Correlation Program) project on Ordovician biotas. The major part is an assembly of genus- and species-level diversity data for the many Ordovician fossil groups. The book also presents an evaluation of how each group diversified through Ordovician time, with assessments of patterns of change and rates of origination and extinction. As such, it will become the standard work and data source for biotic studies on the Ordovician Period.

Book The Appalachian Geology of John M Dennison

Download or read book The Appalachian Geology of John M Dennison written by Katharine Lee Avary and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dr. John M. Dennison spent his career studying the Appalachians, teaching and mentoring his students and professional colleagues, publishing papers, leading field trips, and presenting ideas at regional, national and international conferences. This volume is a collection of papers contributed by former students and colleagues to honor his memory. Learn about stratigraphy and paleontology ranging in age from Ordovician to Mississippian in Kentucky, New York, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia; Devonian airfall tephras throughout the eastern United States; a Devonian lonestone; a Middle Eocene bentonite in North Carolina and its relationship to a volcanic swarm in western Virginia; and a 3D model of a ductile duplex in northwestern Georgia. The stratigraphic and geologic diversity of the papers reflect Dennison's many interests and relationships with a large group of geoscientists"--

Book Foundations of Macroecology

  • Author : Felisa A. Smith
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2014-08-22
  • ISBN : 022611550X

Download or read book Foundations of Macroecology written by Felisa A. Smith and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroecology is an approach to science that emphasizes the description and explanation of patterns and processes at large spatial and temporal scales. Some scientists liken it to seeing the forest through the trees, giving the proverbial phrase an ecological twist. The term itself was first introduced to the modern literature by James H. Brown and Brian A. Maurer in a 1989 paper, and it is Brown’s classic 1995 study, Macroecology, that is credited with inspiring the broad-scale subfield of ecology. But as with all subfields, many modern-day elements of macroecology are implicit in earlier works dating back decades, even centuries. Foundations of Macroecology charts the evolutionary trajectory of these concepts—from the species-area relationship and the latitudinal gradient of species richness to the relationship between body size and metabolic rate—through forty-six landmark papers originally published between 1920 and 1998. Divided into two parts—“Macroecology before Macroecology” and “Dimensions of Macroecology”—the collection also takes the long view, with each paper accompanied by an original commentary from a contemporary expert in the field that places it in a broader context and explains its foundational role. Providing a solid, coherent assessment of the history, current state, and potential future of the field, Foundations of Macroecology will be an essential text for students and teachers of ecology alike.
