Book excerpt: In the United States, more than 55 million young people are enrolled in elementary and secondary schools.1 Because young people attend school about six hours a day approximately 180 days per year, schools are in a unique position to help improve the health status of children and adolescents throughout the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with state and local education and health agencies, developed the School Health Profiles (Profiles) to measure school health policies and practices. Profiles has been conducted biennially since 1996 and includes state, local, territorial, and tribal surveys of principals and lead health education teachers in middle and high schools. Profiles helps state, local, territorial, and tribal education and health agencies monitor and assess characteristics of and trends in school health education; physical education; school health policies related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) prevention, tobacco-use prevention, and competitive foods (i.e., foods and beverages sold outside of the United States Department of Agriculture [USDA] school meal programs); asthma management activities; and family and community involvement in school health programs.

During the past 10 years, based on input from education and health agencies, Profiles has evolved to provide a more comprehensive assessment of school health policies and programs.

For each middle or high school that was sampled, the principal and the lead health education teacher (i.e., the person most knowledgeable about health education at the school) each completed a self-administered questionnaire. This report presents information from 47 states, 19 cities, 4 territories, and 2 tribal governments with weighted data from both principal and lead health education teacher surveys and 2 states (Colorado and New Mexico) and 1 territory (Marshall Islands) with weighted data from the principal survey only (Table 1). Principal and lead health education teacher data from Illinois and Puerto Rico were unweighted and are not included in this report. Palm Beach County obtained weighted data but did not grant CDC permission to include their data in this report. This report also examines both long-term (1996-2010) and short-term (2008-2010) trends in school health policies and practices among states and cities with weighted data for both years. (Contains 7 figures and 48 tables.).

Book excerpt: A 3-step Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was conducted to identify and understand the various profiles of students who experienced and/ or were exposed to certain health-risk behaviors. The health-risk behaviors of interest, the latent variables, were school-related violence, physical activity, screen time, and sleep. Using LCA, results show that there are four significantly different typologies, or profiles, of student health-risk behaviors: Level 1 The Most Support Needed (TMSN), Level 2 Suicide Prevention Needed (SPN), Level 3 Coping Mechanism for Bullying Needed (CMBN), Level 4 Least Support Needed (LSN). In tandem, contextual factors such as age, sex, grade level, race and ethnicity were significantly associated with the odds of belonging to some of the groups. This study is connected to longer-term work. Implications of these groupings on school policies, student health outcomes, and building a school-based coordinated health system will be discussed.
