The book balances the current scientific knowledge with the uncertainty and risks associated with hydraulic fracking. In addition, the authors offer targeted approaches for helping to keep communities safe. The authors include an overview of the historical development of hydraulic fracturing and the technology currently employed. The book also explores the risk, prevention, and mitigation factors that are associated with fracturing. The authors also include legal cases, regulatory issues, and data on the cost of recovery. The volume presents audit checklists for gathering critical information and documentation to support the reliability of the current environmental conditions related to fracking operations and the impact fracking can have on a community. This vital resource: Contains the technical information and mitigation recommendations for safety and environmental issues related to hydraulic fracturing Offers an historical overview of conventional and unconventional oil and gas drilling Explains the geologic and technical issues associated with fracking of tight sand and shale formulations Presents numerous case studies from the United States EPA and other agencies Discusses issues of co-produced waste water and induced seismicity from the injection of wastewater Written for environmental scientists, geologists, engineers, regulators, city planners, attorneys, foresters, wildlife biologists, and others, Environmental Considerations Associated with Hydraulic Fracturing Operations offers a comprehensive resource to the complex environmental and communication issues related to fracking.

Download or read book Underground Gas Storage written by D. J. Evans and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2009 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK became a net importer of natural gas in 2004 and by 2020 will import up to 90% of its requirements, leaving it vulnerable to increasing energy bills and risk of disruption to supply. New pipelines to Europe and improvements to interconnectors will meet some demand, but Government recognises the need for increased gas storage capacity: best met by the construction of underground storage facilities. Energy security has also raised the likelihood of a new generation of coal-fired power-stations, which to be environmentally viable, will require clean-coal technologies with near-zero greenhouse gas emissions. A key element of this strategy will be underground CO2 storage. This volume reviews the technologies and issues involved in the underground storage of natural gas and CO2, with examples from the UK and overseas. The potential for underground storage of other gases such as hydrogen, or compressed air linked to renewable sources is also reviewed.

Download or read book 8th World Salt Symposium written by Rob M. Geertman and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. These two volumes are the proceedings of the 8th World Salt Symposium, held 7 - 11 May 2000 in The Hague, the Netherlands. The papers in the proceedings deal with all aspects of salt and show how important salt is for mankind. Salt: life depends on it is not a fancy catchphrase, it is a simple fact. An example of its many vital roles is the use of salt as carrier of micronutrients. Iodization of salt prevents Iodine Deficiency Disorders, which affect or could affect the lives of billions of people. The papers in these proceedings show just how much progress has been achieved.Salt and health is only one of the myriad of topics dealing with salt presented in the proceedings. Geology, solution mining and production are of course well represented. In line with the increased competition in the salt markets and the increased environmental awareness of the salt producers and the salt consumers, salt processing, salt markets and the relation bet

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Radioactive Materials in the Oil and Gas Industry comprehensively discusses the TENORMs generated from various types of oil and gas processes and their associated adverse human health effects, effective TENORM waste management strategies, and the quantitative risk analysis. The book thoroughly investigates current knowledge, addressing the three main gaps identified in available studies: 1) Exposure to radioactivity, 2) High volume waste as a source of radiation exposure, and 3) A lack of uniform, international safety regulations. This book offers researchers, scientists and graduate and undergraduate students a comprehensive and well-researched reference that covers fundamental concepts, problem identification and solutions development. It is an ideal, comprehensive guideline for professionals involved in the oil and gas and nuclear industries who are concerned about radiological issues. - Demystifies NORM and TENORM concepts and redefines TENORM from technical and nuclear scientific perspectives - Addresses statistically representative data of quantitative risk assessment and dynamic accident modeling - Stresses the need for legislation and consistency of safety standards relating to radiological risks posed by TENORM on health and the environment
