For all the 10 years of her life, H&à has only known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, the warmth of her friends close by, and the beauty of her very own papaya tree. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. H&à and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope. In America, H&à discovers the foreign world of Alabama: the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food, the strange shape of its landscape, and the strength of her very own family. This is the moving story of one girl's year of change, dreams, grief, and healing as she journeys from one country to another, one life to the next.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller In the tradition of Out of My Mind, Wonder, and Mockingbird, this is an intensely moving middle grade novel about being an outsider, coping with loss, and discovering the true meaning of family. Willow Chance is a twelve-year-old genius, obsessed with nature and diagnosing medical conditions, who finds it comforting to count by 7s. It has never been easy for her to connect with anyone other than her adoptive parents, but that hasn’t kept her from leading a quietly happy life . . . until now. Suddenly Willow’s world is tragically changed when her parents both die in a car crash, leaving her alone in a baffling world. The triumph of this book is that it is not a tragedy. This extraordinarily odd, but extraordinarily endearing, girl manages to push through her grief. Her journey to find a fascinatingly diverse and fully believable surrogate family is a joy and a revelation to read. * “Willow's story is one of renewal, and her journey of rebuilding the ties that unite people as a family will stay in readers' hearts long after the last page.”—School Library Journal starred review * “A graceful, meaningful tale featuring a cast of charming, well-rounded characters who learn sweet—but never cloying—lessons about resourcefulness, community, and true resilience in the face of loss.”—Booklist starred review * “What sets this novel apart from the average orphan-finds-a-home book is its lack of sentimentality, its truly multicultural cast (Willow describes herself as a “person of color”; Mai and Quang-ha are of mixed Vietnamese, African American, and Mexican ancestry), and its tone. . . . Poignant.”—The Horn Book starred review "In achingly beautiful prose, Holly Goldberg Sloan has written a delightful tale of transformation that’s a celebration of life in all its wondrous, hilarious and confounding glory. Counting by 7s is a triumph."—Maria Semple, author of Where’d You Go, Bernadette

Download or read book Born Again Atheist written by Lance Gregorchuk and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an old saying that invention is the mother of necessity and this book is a result of that idea. There would never be a need for such a book if the religions and religious authority would practice their traditions like Native Americans or the Australian aborigines. We know they have their gods, costumes, and traditions and just about everyone (bar a few religious fanatics) respects cultural heritage and wants them to revel in their anthropological significance. In the same token, the likelihood that a Native American or aborigine is going to show up at your door preaching that Bahloo, the sun god, is the reason man hates snakes and if you do not accept Bahloo as your savior, you will be walking the desert forever, is essentially non-existent. Your author, Lance Gregorchuk, designed this book to give the free thinker, agnostic, atheist, fence sitter and even believer the facts for the arguments that there can be no god or gods.

Book I m Not Going Down This Road Again

Download or read book I m Not Going Down This Road Again written by Lady Dee and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book begins the barriers that cause breakups in marriages and relationships. I tell my story of how God restored me through my separation and divorce. You have to get rid of the junk in your trunk such as, anger, bitterness, revenge, low self-esteem, hostility, resentment, rejection, trust, and ability of letting go. Through Jesus you can start healing and renewing your mind and spirit through forgiveness, edification and a positive mental attitude that brings peace, restoration, and joy. Once you have sought the kingdom, then there is joy at the end of the tunnel. To know that in order to live a peaceful and joyful life one must through the love of God put themselves on the right track and cut off all vices. Joyful living is achieved through Godly thinking. The most important condition of a joyful life is obeying Gods standards for your life by simply practicing what we have heard and seen. Examples of the fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. Living virtuous lives in accordance to Gods plan takes discipline and obedience. God tells us in Galatians 5:25 to not only live in the Spirit but walk in the Spirit, and it continues in verse 26, which is telling us not to be vain in glory, provoking one another and envying one another. God points out that we have three great weapons to arm ourselves in pursuit of his kingdom: faith, hope, and divine love. Provides an update on my life today, dating, and enjoying life at the fullest. Being happy and at peace with myself.

Book excerpt: Based on a true story: A magnificent portrayal of chaos, darkness, and adventure in Asia's Golden Triangle as the war wages in Vietnam Adrift at the end of the Vietnam War, Paul Roberts and his girlfriend, Fay, are arrested at the Burmese-Thai border for smuggling a couple of ounces of hashish. Stranded in a small Thai prison, they become part of a grisly contest played out by opium warlords, corrupt border patrol police, and two AWOL GIs.
