Book excerpt: Description Gordon Shippey is a fierce campaigner on local issues in his native Middlesbourough. In this book Gordon takes on, amongst others, the local Council, developers who are pushing out poor families and local companies who's record on environmental protection leaves much to be desired. Gordon exposes many a cover-up and hypocritical stance as he attempts to discover what the people in power are doing to ruin our lives. Though Gordon may be tackling issues local to Teesside, these issues will be common across most of the UK. Gordon is doing us all a service; in acting as the eyes and ears of society he is in the frontline of the battle against the gentrification, destruction and dehumanisation of the UK. Support Gordon by reading this book - be inspired to campaign in your local area, on issues you care about! About the Author Gordon Shippey was born in May 1973 in Middlesbrough, where he still lives. Gordon is a trained physicist and is skilled in electronics, he worked for some time in the nuclear industry. After suffering an accident, Gordon developed acute epilepsy, and was exposed to the gross inequality facing many people with different disabilities. Over the years, he became disillusioned with the ethos within the health system. This lead him to write his account of the awful experiences many people had within the health and disability services, the resulting book 'Disabled Gehhto' was re-published by Chipmunka in 2005. He has become a campaigner for civil rights, particularly for those with disabilities, and even ran as a candidate for the 2003 local elections.

Book excerpt: The Cardiff Soul Crew are recognised by police intelligence officers as the most violent football hooligan gang currently active in Britain. Their 400-plus members have been involved in mass disorder at matches for more than twenty-five years. Yet they have largely escaped the notoriety of their English counterparts - until now. Two men closely involved with the gang tell its history from its origins through to the present day: their leaders, their fashions, how they organise and who they fight. Soul Crew relates how an infamous clash with Manchester United's Red Army in the mid-Seventies was the impetus for the formation of the mob. A core group of hardcases from the tough Docks area of Cardiff was joined by alienated, unemployed youths from the valleys and former pit villages of South Wales. They took their name from their love of soul music and adopted the casual fashion of designer-label clothes. In time they would fight fierce battles with rivals like the Frontline Crew, the Bushwhackers, the Gooners and the Central Element. Soul Crew also reveals for the first time the network of alliances and communications between the leading hooligans around the country: the so-called "Category C" thugs who organise much of the violence. And it tells of their cat-and-mouse relationship with the police spotters who now follow them everywhere Soul Crew is the best evocation yet of life running with a soccer mob.

Book excerpt: Preaston, California is headed for a staggering shake up unlike no earthquake can create, by virtue of teen identical triplets Terrell, Derrell, and Jerrell Jenkins. However, their road to excellence is paved with many potholes to make their journey jarring and difficult. With each brother having their share of problems, Terrells troubles seem to eclipse the others by far. Being overly good-natured brands him an easy target for public harassment, ridicule, and disregard, and if that wasnt enough, the strong tie he always had with his brothers is quickly unraveling. Terrell feels obligated to preserve unity within the family, since it was the one thing the boys father routinely instilled in them, right up until the time of his mysterious death. As Terrells optimism declines, his discovery of three mystical stones, which grants the brothers with incredible mental powers, is just the remedy to give his diminishing hope an upsurge. The stones were once owned by gifted Asian children, born over two thousand years ago, and identical triplets as well. The vitality of these extraordinary gems establishes a special meaning for both generations of triplets, and sets the course for adventure that will ultimately change the city of Preaston and mankinds lives forever.

Download or read book Roy s World written by Barry Gifford and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tie-in to the new documentary, Roy's World, directed by Rob Christopher narrated by Lili Taylor, Matt Dillon and Willem Dafoe, these stories comprise one of Barry Gifford's most enduring works, his homage to the gritty Chicago landscape of his youth Barry Gifford has been writing the story of America in acclaimed novel after acclaimed novel for the last half-century. At the same time, he's been writing short stories, his "Roy stories," that show America from a different vantage point, a certain mix of innocence and worldliness. Reminiscent of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn and Ernest Hemingway's Nick Adams stories, Gifford's Roy stories amount to the coming-of-age novel he never wrote, and are one of his most important literary achievements--time-pieces that preserve the lost worlds of 1950s Chicago and the American South, the landscape of postwar America seen through the lens of a boy's steady gaze. The twists and tragedies of the adult world seem to float by like curious flotsam, like the show girls from the burlesque house next door to Roy's father's pharmacy who stop by when they need a little help, or Roy's mom and the husbands she weds and then sheds after Roy's Jewish mobster father's early death. Life throws Roy more than the usual curves, but his intelligence and curiosity shape them into something unforeseen, while Roy's complete lack of self-pity allow the stories to seem to tell themselves.

Book excerpt: Brighton Up: The Inside Story of Brighton & Hove Albion's Journey From Despair to Triumph and the Premier League tells the story of how Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club bounced back from the heartbreak of missing out on promotion to the Premier League by the narrowest of margins, to achieve that ultimate goal earlier this month. Acclaimed sports journalist Nick Szczepanik, a lifelong Brighton fan with strong contacts at the club, documents its travails over two turbulent seasons. The book explains how the Seagulls, written off as certainties for relegation to League One before the 2015-16 season, overcame the loss of one of their own in the Shoreham Air Show tragedy to go on a record unbeaten run. But although top scorers in the Championship, they fell agonisingly short of their target of automatic promotion by a single goal, then lost out again in the lottery of the play-offs. The football world expected them to be crushed by disappointment and outspent by the big guns of Newcastle, Norwich and Aston Villa, but instead they regrouped and came back stronger in 2016-17. Led by experienced and inscrutable manager Chris Hughton and backed by owner Tony Bloom - the world-class poker player nicknamed 'The Lizard' for his ice-cold blood - they played with a determination not to let the heartbreak happen again.

Book excerpt: In April 1992, a handful of young physicians, not one of them a surgeon, was trapped along with 50,000 men, women, and children in the embattled enclave of Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina. There the doctors faced the most intense professional, ethical, and personal predicaments of their lives. Drawing on extensive interviews, documents, and recorded materials she collected over four and a half years, doctor and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sheri Fink tells the harrowing--and ultimately enlightening--story of these physicians and the three who try to help them: an idealistic internist from Doctors without Borders, who hopes that interposition of international aid workers will help prevent a massacre; an aspiring Bosnian surgeon willing to walk through minefields to reach the civilian wounded; and a Serb doctor on the opposite side of the front line with the army that is intent on destroying his former colleagues. With limited resources and a makeshift hospital overflowing with patients, how can these doctors decide who to save and who to let die? Will their duty to treat patients come into conflict with their own struggle to survive? And are there times when medical and humanitarian aid ironically prolong war and human suffering rather than helping to relieve it?

Book excerpt: Cast your mind back to the mid-1990s. The Premiership was shiny and new, England weren't terrible at football, and exciting foreign players like Gianfranco Zola, Eric Cantona and Georgi Kinkladze were lighting up our game. In an industrial town in the north-east of England, a little Brazilian magic was the catalyst to thrust a previously provincial, middle-of-the-road club into the full glare of the global footballing spotlight. The Little Fella: How Middlesbrough Fell in Love with Juninho is the story of Juninho Paulista and his three-act association with Middlesbrough, culminating in the League Cup win of 2004, which today still remains Boro's only major trophy. It examines the World Cup winner's part in a rollercoaster 1996/97 season, which saw Boro lose two cup finals and end up being relegated; to the redemptive, triumphant 2003/04 season. With contributions from some of Boro's other star names of a golden period, such as Fabrizio Ravanelli, Emerson, Gaizka Mendieta and Gareth Southgate, The Little Fella attempts to translate into words the magic football fans witnessed on the pitch during those heady days.

Book Road Map to Scale Up Solar Irrigation Pumps in Bangladesh 2023 2031

Download or read book Road Map to Scale Up Solar Irrigation Pumps in Bangladesh 2023 2031 written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This road map shows how Bangladesh can swap diesel irrigation pumps for solar powered systems to reduce fuel imports, increase farmers’ incomes, and support the country’s clean energy transition. It provides guidelines for the installation of up to 45,000 solar irrigation pumps, which could cut annual diesel consumption by 300,000 tons. The plan would support 1.3 million farmers and give them the chance to sell surplus electricity. Setting out financing proposals, the publication explains how the zero-carbon pumps can drive more sustainable groundwater use, reduce poverty and inequality, and help Bangladesh better adapt to the growing impacts of climate change.
