Book Transpacific Cartographies

Download or read book Transpacific Cartographies written by Melody Yunzi Li and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transpacific Cartographies examines how contemporary Chinese diasporic narratives address the existential loss of home for immigrant communities at a time of global precarity and amid rising Sino-US tensions. Focusing on cultural productions of the Chinese diaspora from the 1990s to the present -- including novels by the Sinophone writers Yan Geling (The Criminal Lu Yanshi), Shi Yu (New York Lover), Chen Qian (Listen to the Caged Bird Sing), and Rong Rong (Notes of a Couple), as well as by the Anglophone writer Ha Jin (A Free Life; A Map of Betrayal), selected TV shows (Beijinger in New York; The Way We Were), and online literature -- Melody Yunzi Li argues that the characters in these stories create multilayered maps that transcend the territorial boundaries that make finding a home in a foreign land a seemingly impossible task. In doing so, these “maps” outline a transpacific landscape that reflects the psycho-geography of homemaking for diasporic communities. Intersecting with and bridging Sinophone studies, Chinese American studies, and diaspora studies and drawing on theories of literary cartography, Transpacific Cartographies demonstrates how these “maps” offer their readers different paths for finding a sense of home no matter where they are.

Book The Contemporary Femme Fatale

Download or read book The Contemporary Femme Fatale written by Katherine Farrimond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The femme fatale occupies a precarious yet highly visible space in contemporary cinema. From sci-fi alien women to teenage bad girls, filmmakers continue to draw on the notion of the sexy deadly woman in ways which traverse boundaries of genre and narrative. This book charts the articulations of the femme fatale in American cinema of the past twenty years, and contends that, despite her problematic relationship with feminism, she offers a vital means for reading the connections between mainstream cinema and representations of female agency. The films discussed raise questions about the limits and potential of positioning women who meet highly normative standards of beauty as powerful icons of female agency. They point towards the constant shifting between patriarchal appropriation and feminist recuperation that inevitably accompanies such representations within mainstream media contexts.

Loop Tracks follows simple twists of fate around history and women's lives, in an utterly compelling novel. 'A world full of human damage and human courage' -Bill Manhire, Emeritus Professor, Victoria University of Wellington It's 1978. Charlie is sixteen and pregnant and the only legal abortion clinic in Auckland has been forced to close. She has to fly to Sydney, but the plane is delayed on the tarmac. It's 2019. Charlie's quiet life in Wellington with her neurodivergent grandson is shattered by the arrival of his first girlfriend and the father he has never met. As the Covid-19 pandemic takes hold and the country goes into lockdown, Charlie must counsel her grandson through his new relationships and confront the choices she made decades earlier. Told in a dry and playful tone, Loop Tracks is utterly compelling. Ingrid Horrocks says- 'It's about abortion and euthanasia, conspiracy theories and intergenerational guilt, but mainly it's about the love between a grandmother and her grown-up grandson.' Loop Tracks is a major New Zealand novel, written in real time as the Covid-19 pandemic, New Zealand general election and euthanasia referendum in 2020 unfolded.
