Book Unzipped

Download or read book Unzipped written by Suzi Quatro and published by Hodder & Stoughton. This book was released on 2008-07-24 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You've seen Suzi Q, the feature documentary about legendary 70s rocker Suzi Quatro. Now read Unzipped, the story of how Little Susie from Detroit grew up to become an international superstar musician - as told by the glam rock sensation herself. The glam rock icon behind such hits as 'Can the Can', 'Devil Gate Drive' and 'Your Mamma Won't Like Me' has sold over 50 million records worldwide and has worked, partied and rocked out with legendary figures such as Noddy Holder, Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop. Suzi Quatro's transformation from girl to glam rocker was fuelled by huge talent, determination, hard work and a fabulous sense of humour, but it wasn't easy. In Unzipped, Quatro tells her story of life behind the scenes and in the thick of it as one of the first major break-out female rock bassists. Later, she went on to Hollywood to join the cast of Happy Days, juggling her acting and music career with a turbulent personal life and constant touring around the world. Through it all, she never lost her passion to perform or her sense of adventure. Suzi Quatro remembers it all in this brilliantly personal and funny book, a thrilling account of a life lived going hell for leather.

Book excerpt: Peta Wheeler measures time differently now. Before the couch. After the couch. Before the couch, Peta knew who she was. A 34-year-old information-dissemination professional, married to the man of her dreams and thinking about motherhood. She'd never been late for work, drunk beer or kissed a stranger. After the couch, Peta hits a cyclist, tries to get pregnant, tries to make sure she isn't pregnant, avoids her husband and family and friends and colleagues, drinks too much coffee, and falls in love with a girl. And that's just the first week. Nicki Reed was born in 1968, and lives in Melbourne with her husband and three sons. She says writing Unzipped, her first novel, was the best fun she ever had. 'Reed is a very good writer. Intelligent, sure of herself and emotive without going overboard. There are some truly lovely descriptive passages and a lot of snappy, reads-like-real-life dialogue. I hope straight women don't feel embarrassed about buying this book. It's not lesbian erotica, it's just a love story, minus a man.' Sunday Star Times 'The writing is reminiscent of a Bridget Jones style, albeit without the diary entries. The quirky humour is there as are the lists of dos and don'ts and the moments of hilarious humility. This is a light fun easy read with genuine erotic passages that should delight most women readers.' Readings Monthly 'Hilarious, intelligent, snappy and sassy: Unzipped is a knockout.' Toni Jordan 'Unzipped is like every girl-meets-boy story, but better. Oh, and it's girl-mets-girl.' Jessica Rudd 'Unzipped is a mix of Mills & Boon, the raunchy 50 Shades series and comedy. It's romantic, detailed and more than naughty enough that it should be kept out of the reach of young readers.' Dominion Post Weekend 'This is chick lit—perhaps that should be les lit—with a bit of class.' Saturday Age 'First-time novelist Nicki Reed writes with an assured voice and Unzipped has a singular charm all on its own.' Saturday Age 'This entertaining sexual romp comedy is enhanced by the personalities of BJ, who knows herself almost too well for one so young and Peta's mouthy sister Ruby, who will steal the show when the movie version gets made.' Book excerpt: Hardly are there any issues in life that are more emotive and contentious than religion. Part of the reason for this is that rarely do any two religions agree on most of their teachings about deity and humanity: there is so much divisiveness and mutual distrust. Christianity is not spared these mutual acrimony and disaffection, even within itself. Thus, there are inside it such characterizations as Orthodox, Pentecostals, Evangelicals, etc, with each claiming superiority of spirituality over and above one another, and citing portions of the Bible to argue its positions. But this has erected confusion in the minds of many, who find it difficult to dissect what are right or wrong doctrines in the face of one group of Christians accepting certain practices or beliefs, while another group condemns the same things. Unzipped! traces these doctrinal crises, in part, to misrepresentation of the two parts of the Bible: Old and New Testaments, submitting that biblical Christianity is all about what Christ and His disciples taught and practiced. In other words, it posits that if Christ and His apostles did not teach or practice a doctrine, Christians do not have to bother about it. The book challenges all who call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to look up to, and live for Him, as the author and finisher of their faith. It therefore contends that biblical Christianity, as opposed to its religious version, does not admit of syncretism.

Book excerpt: ANALYZE THIS . . . Chrissy McMullen has made a career leap, all the way from slinging drinks at Chicago’s most notorious nightclub to dispensing psychotherapy from her sleek new practice in L.A. Even if she can’t quite shed her too-loud, too-curvy alter ego–or the brawling family that insists on claiming kinship. So when her most famous client, buff football star “Bomber” Bomstad, starts chasing her around her desk and getting, well . . . unzipped . . . Christina gets just a little miffed–until Bomber has the bad manners to drop dead at her feet. Enter Jack Rivera, a no-nonsense detective with a grim attitude and a great butt, who’s determined to prove this cocktail-waitress-turned-shrink was engaging in some very unethical behavior. Persuading Rivera that she’s not a murderer isn’t going to be easy. Plunging headfirst into a city full of people in need of some serious therapy, Chrissy will have to use all her street smarts, a good deal of sex appeal, and a little love to clear her name–and cancel an appointment with a killer. Praise for Unzipped “Lois Greiman is a modern day Dorothy Sayers. Witty as hell, yet talented enough to write like an angel with a broken wing.”—Kinky Friedman, author of Ten Little New Yorkers “This is an amazingly good book with tons of twists and turns. And it's funny. Chrissy's internal thoughts are hilarious, as are the situations she gets herself into. Plus, the sexual tension between Chrissy and Rivera spices things up but never detracts from the pacing. Greiman has put out a winner that will hopefully become a series.”—Romantic Times, Top Pick

Book excerpt: Being overweight, you are judged on a daily basis because of how you are on the outside and rarely ever because of whom you are on the inside. I had visions of walking into a party and people staring at me. A zipper appears close to my chest and I unzipped it and a skinny person was revealed to the surprise of everyone in the room. I was finally exposing my true inner being and no longer hiding or surrounding myself in “fat.”. We also unzip when we are about to do something intimate and personal. We unzip for the purpose of changing, exposing or releasing in some form. In order to be your true self, you have to have the courage to expose yourself physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. We all have a story that is being written daily. Characters come and go for the purpose of moving the story along. Some scenes are sad and dark, some are comical and light. We hold the pen and dictate where we want to take our audience watching.. Some of us choose to keep it to ourselves and some of us want to use it as an opportunity to help and inspire others. I am the latter.. This is my story…

If we can’t explain some of humanity’s past, what do we know of our future? Genesis Unzipped asks big questions about the origins of humanity and the universe, and gives answers based on years of author Lucio Licciardello’s personal research. By mixing modern science and the author’s own theories with existing theories about the Book of Genesis; ancient aliens; and Babylonian and Sumerian texts, a retelling of Earth’s history emerges. By looking in new ways at our past, we can look in new ways at what our future might be.

Book excerpt: Have you ever had everything you love snatched from your hands in the blink of an eye? Do you know what it’s like to watch helplessly as those you cherish burn to a crisp? Have you ever heard a mournful cry for street justice and then realized that the only person left to heed the call was you? Pearl Baines is a straight Harlem stunna. She and her twin sister, Diamond, are chased by some of the most notorious ballers in New York City. But while their father, ex-gangsta Irish Baines, devotes his life to rehabilitating young thugs, his sexy twin daughters fall hard for the glamour and glitter of strip clubs and street life. Unlike Diamond, though, Pearl is able to shake off the trappings of the hood in search of a better future. After graduating at the top of her class, Pearl becomes an FBI agent and plans to get as far away from the grime of Harlem as possible. But fate is cruel and the streets always get their due. On what should have been the happiest night of her life, Pearl’s family perishes in a ball of merciless flames—flames intentionally set on the orders of Mookie Mason, her father’s archenemy and the most ruthless gangsta in Harlem. Crazed with grief, Pearl becomes unzipped. Hell-bent on retribution, she prepares for battle in New York’s urban jungle. With the help of Menace, an ex-lover who once trampled all over her heart but was deeply loyal to Irish Baines, Pearl puts her FBI training and tactical skills to work in a murderous mission designed to do what her father wasn’t able to: take down Mookie Mason, and his entire crew, one at a time.

Download or read book My Soul Unzipped written by Carol Wawrychuk and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June of 2016, Carol's, safe predictable life was uprooted. The red Toyota BOXRRAV loaded with a couple of suitcases, a few plants, some bonsai tools, and her white boxer Spud, headed east toward the Land of Enchantment. In 2006, she began documenting the journey of finding her Nana and the subsequent cleanup of the cemetery at the State Mental Hospital in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Maybe, this crazy God-adventure was initiated then. If it was, she certainly didn't feel it. In fact, it only served to remind her of the sadness that she had kept hidden in the recesses of her mind. She loved the vast expanses of open landscape, the blue skies with white clouds unlike anywhere else she had ever been. Cactus, pinion trees, rugged mountain ranges, and glorious sunrises and sunsets had been blotted out by memories of family struggles and loss. But as Nana slowly made her way back home, so did Carol. She was being called not out of the desert but back to the desert. In probably the most unlikely twist since deliberately choosing God as her partner, he was making straight the path to return home, shepherding her soul back to New Mexico. This is a tale of second chances-of following one's heart. It is a story of paradox and contradiction, of mountain peaks and valley floors, of sadness and rejoicing. But most of all, it is the story of a soul set free.

Book excerpt: The dark and dirty secrets of the mating and dating scene are exposed as Courtney Weaver hears all from her friends--and tells a few secrets of her own--in this true-life Bridget Jones meets Tales of the City. Sexuality in the '90s is a different animal: While men and women have been given the tools to communicate, they haven't been given the instructions. With audacious, witty, and sometimes scandalous writing, Courtney Weaver's Unzipped follows her life and those of her friends as they attempt to navigate the waters of intimate relationships without paddles. Weaver, whose column "Unzipped" was "Salon magazine's most popular feature, lends an indulgent ear to her friends as they wrestle with the lure of having sex with exes, predict bedroom prowess from kisses, and search for the most tactful way to reclaim favorite pieces of clothing left behind after messy breakups. Harriet is convinced that a concrete set of '50s-era rules is the only way to catch a mate, while Jemma turns to her own shocking set of rules in order to fulfill her desires. Meanwhile, Weaver's single-mom hairstylist Marie lends a sympathetic ear and an acerbic tongue when she too uncovers a sexual scandal in her own backyard. In the tradition of Tales of the City, but peopled with characters you might actually meet, Unzipped is a work of narrative nonfiction that explores all the complexities of sex in the '90s.
