Download or read book Unwrapping Christmas written by Daniel Miller and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age of secularization and the decline of ritual, Christmas has emerged as the most promising candidate for the first global festival. It is celebrated in the Christian West as well as in many countries with either a minority or no Christian population. How is it that Christmas is not merely surviving, but actually gaining in importance? Unwrapping Christmas is the first comparative study of the Christmas phenomenon, based on direct observation of how the festival is actually celebrated in diverse social contexts. It begins by presenting general theories of Christmas and includes the first full English translation of "Father Christmas Executed" by Claude Levi-Strauss. The focus then turns to two controversial issues: the relationship between Christmas and materialism, and the debate over the place of the family in Christmas celebrations. Both of these issues are examined and interpreted in a variety of cultural contexts; including the USA, Japan, Britain, Sweden, and Trinidad. Christmas is rapidly becoming the focus for a constellation of activities including gift-giving, the marking of the seasons, and the celebration of extended family networks. This collection, the first systematic analysis of Christmas, represents a fascinating and significant contribution to understanding how and why this holiday has developed into the global festival celebrated today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to focus on Christ during Advent Most Christians agree that Christmas is all about Jesus, yet most of us spend little time preparing our hearts to celebrate Him. Why is this? Partly because we don’t know how. In Unwrapping the Names of Jesus, Asheritah Ciuciu leads readers through the four weeks of Advent (Hope, Preparation, Joy, and Love). Each week: Begins with an interactive family devotional that equips readers to celebrate Advent together Offers five daily reflections that focus on that week's name of Jesus Includes suggestions for fun-filled family activities or service projects This devotional can be used by readers in their own personal worship times or as a tool to engage in family worship during the busy holiday season. Either way, participants will gain a greater sense of awe and wonder at who Jesus is. By focusing on the person and character of Jesus throughout the Advent season, readers will prepare their hearts so that when they admire the live nativity, sit in the candlelight service, or wake up on Christian morning, they can join the faithful who sing from the bottom of their hearts, "O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!"

Book excerpt: This innovative volume challenges contemporary views on material culture by exploring the relationship between wrapping materials and practices and the objects, bodies, and places that define them. Using examples as diverse as baby swaddling, Egyptian mummies, Celtic tombs, lace underwear, textile clothing, and contemporary African silk, the dozen archaeologist and anthropologist contributors show how acts of wrapping and unwrapping are embedded in beliefs and thoughts of a particular time and place. Employing methods of artifact analysis, microscopy, and participant observation, the contributors provide a new lens on material culture and its relationship to cultural meaning.

St. Nick does know that Theo is grieving however, so he shows her four scenes from her life that give her hope, but he's also had cryptic messages from the Christmas Higher Powers that lead him to begin Theo's training as the first ever female Christmas Angel - a role Theo is not sure she is cut out for. Theo's training is soon derailed by St. Nick's evil brother, filled with jealousy and spite over his brother's popularity and, with confidence dented, and saddened by society's spiraling levels of expectation and greed, St. Nick begins to falter. Theo does everything she can to defeat Nick's brother and to lift St. Nick's spirits, but as the deadline for Christmas miracles draws close, she realises she must complete them herself - but is she up to the job?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyra was determined to have a classic, good old-fashioned, traditional Christmas this year complete with snow, gingerbread houses, lights, and wrapped presents. Even if that meant she had to have it completely on her own. And that was the plan as she drove out of the City and up into the steep hills of Vermont toward some secluded cabins where she could have what was totally not going to be a depressing head-in-the-oven-Christmas-For-One. She never quite made it to the cabins. And, along the way, found that while a Christmas alone wasn't all that great, a Christmas for two, yeah, that was pretty amazing...
Download or read book The Physics of Christmas written by Roger Highfield and published by Back Bay Books. This book was released on 2008-12-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why might Rudolph's nose have been red? Why do we actually give Christmas gifts? Why has smell become an important component in the Christmas shopping experience? Roger Highfield, science editor of London's Daily Telegraph and co-author of the highly acclaimed The Arrow of Time, has taken a long-overdue look at our most cherished holiday from the rigorous (but highly entertaining) viewpoint of a scientist. What are the thermodynamics involved in cooking a turkey? What are the likely celestial candidates for the Star of Bethlehem? Is the concept of a virgin birth scientifically feasible? What happens to us physically when we overindulge in alcohol? How does snow form? Why are we always depressed after Christmas? How does Santa manage to deliver all those presents in one night? (He has, in fact, little over two ten- thousands of a second to get between each of the 842 million households he must visit.) The Physics of Christmas is that rare science book that manages to be as delightful as it is informative.
