Book Unwanted

Download or read book Unwanted written by Andreas Schmidt and published by utzverlag GmbH. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 9 essays collected in this volume are the result of a workshop for international doctoral and postdoctoral researchers in Old Norse-Icelandic Saga Studies held at the Institute for Nordic Philology (LMU) in Munich in December 2018. The contributors focus on ›unwanted‹, illicit, neglected, and marginalised elements in saga literature and research on it. The chapters cover a wide range of intra-textual phenomena, narrative strategies, and understudied aspects of individual texts and subgenres. The analyses demonstrate the importance of deviance and transgression as literary characteristics of saga narration, as well as the discursive parameters that have been dominant in Saga Studies. The aim of this collection is to highlight the productiveness of developing modified methodological approaches to the sagas and their study, with a starting point in narratological considerations.

Book excerpt: “Terrific read. Stories of stolen valor you won’t believe, and those who hunt them down and participated in writing legislation to restore dignity to all those who have truly served in combat.” —Peter C. Lemon, recipient, Congressional Medal of Honor Stolen valor occurs when a person lies about receiving military decorations that he or she has in fact never earned. It has become a major societal problem that has been discussed numerous times in the news; according to the New York Times, the Department of Veterans Affairs paid disability benefits to more than six hundred people falsely claiming to have been POWs in the Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars. The number of stolen valor cases reported to the FBI has tripled in the last decade. In fact, more imposters lie about earning high military declarations for battlefield bravery than the actual number of real-life hero recipients. These imposters trade on tales and the trappings of military valor to secure privileges such as career advancements and even unearned veterans’ benefits. In Restoring Valor, Doug Sterner provides riveting case studies of the stolen valor imposters he’s investigated and exposed and the serious crimes—including murder—they’ve committed. He chronicles the evolution of stolen valor from the inception of the republic to today. Sterner shows why the federal law he and his wife, Pam, helped to enact—the Stolen Valor Act—is necessary. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

In a world where people serve ideas and causes because they care, the very same people are exploited for their apparent weakness, a gross lack of respect. Values of honour and rights have been lost or tarnished, voices drowned by the noise of money. Somewhere, it has been decided that the world has lost its moral compass, and the time has come to provide the stimulus to create a new direction, and a fresh level of responsibility to others. Watch out .... You don't know us. But we know you..... We harness global communications systems to watch closely when values of honour and rights have been lost or tarnished, voices drowned by the noise of money. And we use the cyberpower at our fingertips to take swift and slick action. With or without your approval. Take care. We have the resources to implement a new religion of Respect. Piece by piece the puzzle builds up to an uncomfortable awakening. Someone out there is taking steps to dispense with the people exploiting others and showing lack of respect for the society they live in. If you are on the List, be prepared to listen to the Message, or take the consequences. This work speaks of a new and different age, drawing on the power of science and technology to prompt ethical change. Where those don't address their own moral shortfalls, there are other people whose role it is to step in with a message, and the results can be terminal...
