We could hear them up ahead, close, but we couldn't see them as visibility was close to nil. I reached for some dirt to sift through my fingers and track the breezes. The elephant were almost stationary, languidly browsing. Judging from the contented purring of their stomachs, they had no idea we were there. We inched closer, the heat and the tension oppressive. Twenty yards; ten yards; ten feet. We could see them, but couldn't make out one end from the other, nor could we see any ivory. Big gray slabs of wrinkled hide was all that was discernable, and even that seemed to pulse and dance out of focus in the heat and thorn. Lati touched my shoulder, motioning to back off. At mid-day the breeze was bound to give us away. We backpedaled, guns ready...." The countries of East Africa were getting independence in the 1960's and the Teachers of East Africa Program, run by Columbia University, was one vehicle used to expand the staffing of the secondary schools so these countries could quickly muster the manpower necessary to run their own affairs. I was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the teachers, and this book is the story of my four years spent in Tanzania: teaching, hunting and touring. In the process I had many wonderful experiences with the people, some close calls with the elephants, climbed an active volcano, presided over a polling station in the first Presidential election in Tanzania, and hunted with ear gatherers. I tried to skim Dan's book after we returned from Africa. But it's not the sort of piece you should skim. I really enjoyed all of it, but especially the writer's voice and consciousness -- young, male, enthusiastic, brash, reflective, smart, brave, appreciative and oh so full of life! I loved it! Book excerpt: This is a study of the genesis, evolution, adaptation and subordination of the Kikuyu squatter labourers, who comprised the majority of resident labourers on settler plantations and estates in the Rift Valley Province of the White Highlands. The story of the squatter presence in the White Highlands is essentially the story of the conflicts and contradictions that existed between two agrarian systems, the settler plantation economy and the squatter peasant option. Initially, the latter developed into a viable but much resented sub-system which operated within and, to some extent, in competition with settler agriculture. This study is largely concerned with the dynamics of the squatter presence in the White Highlands and with the initiative, self-assertion and resilience with which they faced their subordinate position as labourers. In their response to the machinations of the colonial system, the squatters were neither passive nor malleable but, on the contrary, actively resisted coercion and subordination as they struggled to carve out a living for themselves and their families.... Many books have been written about specific events or individuals but readers who simply want to know what it was like to have been in East Africa during the colonial era are faced with a confusing choice of source material. The modern tourist or business visitor to East Africa is often puzzled at how things got the way they are and has no idea of the achievements of the men and women who were responsible for its transition from a wilderness to a modern group of states. This book is designed to fill the gap by presenting a light-hearted but none the less serious history of the bwanas and memsahibs of East Africa how they came into being, how they lived and loved, what they ate and drank, and why they left the scene so precipitately. As time goes by, there will be fewer survivors of the colonial era left to tell the tale and the current wave of interest in various aspects of the British Empire will face a lack of eye-witness accounts. While the author is sympathetic to Africas problems, he is gravely concerned about its future and suggests that the road to independence which was trodden so hastily in the 1960s was cynically created by European politicians for selfish reasons. Hitherto unpublished material has been included in the text and though the author has told most of it in his own words, the book has been enlivened by the personal experiences and favourite anecdotes of a wide circle of ex-East Africans. The aim has been to give someone a good read and academic niceties such as footnotes and references have been deliberately avoided. The policy has also been followed of not mentioning living persons unless they happen to be public figures.
