A benchmark-standard multistage transonic research compressor was developed by modifying the Purdue High-Speed Axial Compressor to feature new IGV and stator rows representative of modern high pressure compressors. A quantitative understanding and predictive capability for multi-stage blade row forced response was developed by analytically and experimentally investigating the fundamental flow phenomena. Experiments at Purdue investigated and quantified the interacting blade row unsteady aerodynamics and resulting vane vibration and stress response. Duke University developed a new computationally efficient unsteady aerodynamic analysis of multistage flows associated with flutter and forced response. The inherently small damping of complex higher order modes was addressed by investigating techniques to control the flow induced vibrations. The issue of robustness was also considered.

To avoid surprise HCF failures or to design blades for longer life, accurate vibratory stress predictions are crucial. This requires validated design systems. As multistage blade row interactions drive most HCF problems the key barrier research issue is MultiStage Interaction Steady and Unsteady Aerodynamics. Hence, multistage forcing functions, their mutual interaction, and the resultant blade row steady and unsteady aerodynamic response, including three-dimensional and transonic flow conditions, must be addressed. To validate or direct the development of advanced models and the complete aeroelastic design system, data obtained in an appropriate multistage flow environment are required. Of particular interest is defining these three-dimensional blade row flow fields with enough detail for use in CFD code verification and development, thereby enabling the limits of applicability and the modeling inherent in the various codes to be addressed. To accomplish this, first appropriate experimental facilities which experimentally model the fundamental three dimensional steady and unsteady flow' phenomena are required. These are either currently available or are in progress funded by AFOSR at Purdue University. Hence, the key experimental issue is nonintrusive instrumentation capable of three-dimensional whole flow field measurements. Under this grant, instrumentation has been acquired to be utilized to quantify the three-dimensional blade row steady and instantaneous blade-to-blade velocity field.

The fluid dynamic environment of a blade-row embedded within multi-stage turbomachines is dominated by such highly unsteady fluid flow conditions. The production of wakes and circumferential pressure variations from adjacent blade-rows causes large unsteady energy transfers between the fluid and the blades. Determination of the forced response of a blade requires the ability to predict the unsteady loads which are induced by these aerodynamic sources. A review of research publications was done to determine recent investigations of the response of turbomachinery blading subjected to aerodynamic excitations. Such excitations are a direct result of the blade-row aerodynamic interaction which occurs between adjacent cascades of blades. The linearization is based on the Euler equations of fluid motion and is motivated by the need for an efficient aerodynamic analysis that can be used in predicting the aeroelastic and aeroacoustic responses of blade rows. The field equations and surface conditions required for inviscid, nonlinear and linearized, unsteady aerodynamic analyses of three-dimensional flow through a single, blade row operating within a cylindrical duct, are derived. An existing numerical algorithm for determining time-accurate solutions of the nonlinear unsteady flow problem is described, and a numerical model, based upon this nonlinear flow solver, is formulated for the first-harmonic linear unsteady problem. The linearized aerodynamic and numerical models have been implemented into a first-harmonic unsteady flow code, called LINFLUX. At present this code applies only to two-dimensional flows, but an extension to three-dimensions is planned as future work. The three-dimensional aerodynamic and numerical formulations are described in this report. Numerical results for two-dimensional unsteady cascade flows, excited by prescribed blade motions and prescribed aerodynamic disturbances at inlet and exit, are also provided to illustrate the present capabilities of the LINFLUX analysis. Book excerpt: This report describes the development of an implicit, viscous method for the solution of the quasi-three-dimensional flow equations for rotor-stator interaction in transonic turbomachinery. The flow algorithm is described, followed by the implicit time-marching scheme, and the one-equation turbulence model. The algorithm is implemented on an unstructured grid arrangement of locally structured micro-blocks called 'patches.' Solution-dependent adaptation is used to refine the grid in regions containing flow features which require enhanced resolution. An overlapped sliding grid interface is used to transfer flow equation information between the respective blade grids. The resulting computational algorithm has been used to perform a number of validation exercises and has been demonstrated on a modern transonic turbine stage. Where possible, these results are compared with experimental data and show the ability of the method to accurately capture the unsteady flow physics in a robust and computationally efficient manner.
