This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern, magical twist on the Gothic Romance and Girl Detective genres, this book will appeal to fans of both Beautiful Creatures and the Mortal Instruments series. Reviewers have praised the take-charge heroine and the spellbinding romance. Bound together. Worlds apart. Kami Glass is in love with someone she's never met—a boy she's talked to in her head since she was born. This has made her an outsider in the sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale, but she has learned ways to turn that to her advantage. Her life seems to be in order, until disturbing events begin to occur. There has been screaming in the woods and the manor overlooking the town has lit up for the first time in 10 years. . . . The Lynburn family, who ruled the town a generation ago and who all left without warning, have returned. Now Kami can see that the town she has known and loved all her life is hiding a multitude of secrets—and a murderer. The key to it all just might be the boy in her head. The boy she thought was imaginary is real, and definitely and deliciously dangerous. "A sparkling fantasy that will make you laugh and break your heart." --Cassandra Clare, New York Times bestselling author "A darkly funny, deliciously thrilling Gothic." --Kelley Armstrong, New York Times bestselling author "Readers will laugh, shiver, and maybe even swoon over this modern Gothic novel." --Melissa Marr, New York Times bestselling author "Breathtaking--a compulsive, rocketing read."--Tamora Pierce, New York Times bestselling author "Captures the reader with true magic."--Esther Friesner, author of Nobody's Princess "A laugh-out-loud delight." --Publishers Weekly

Book Unspoken Heroines Depictions of the Maternal in the Works of Frank O Connor Frank McCourt and Edna O Brien

Download or read book Unspoken Heroines Depictions of the Maternal in the Works of Frank O Connor Frank McCourt and Edna O Brien written by Caitlin M. Farmer and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reading Frank O'Connor's "Man of the House" and "My Oedipus Complex," Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes" and Edna O'Brien's "The Country Girls" side-by-side, one sees a vivid illustration of the changing depictions of the mother character within Irish literature. The portrayal of mother characters in these works is significant to the literary representation of the social development of several generations of women within the Republic of Ireland. The depictions of the mother as see in the works of O'Connor, McCourt and O'Brien are also vital to the development of the female presence in literature bot as completely developed characters and as narrators, beginning with the see-but-rarely-heard mother, transitioning to the mother as family-advocate-and-constant, and ending with the sexually-driven-but-repressed mother teaching her daughter to evolve beyond tradition." from abstract

Download or read book The New Heroines written by Katheryn Wright and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the next generation of teen and young adult heroines in popular culture are creating a new feminist ideal for the 21st century. Representations of a teenage girl who is unique or special occur again and again in coming-of-age stories. It's an irresistible concept: the heroine who seems just like every other, but under the surface, she has the potential to change the world. This book examines the cultural significance of teen and young adult female characters—the New Heroines—in popular culture. The book addresses a wide range of examples primarily from the past two decades, with several chapters focusing on a specific heroic figure in popular culture. In addition, the author offers a comparative analysis between the "New Woman" figure from the late 19th and early 20th century and the New Heroine in the 21st century. Readers will understand how representations of teenage girls in fiction and nonfiction are positioned as heroic because of their ability to find out about themselves by connecting with other people, their environment, and technology.

Book Heroines of Sport

  • Author : Jennifer Hargreaves
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-01-11
  • ISBN : 1134585306
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Heroines of Sport written by Jennifer Hargreaves and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heroines of Sport looks closely at different groups of women whose stories have been excluded from previous accounts of women's sports and female heroism. It focuses on five specific groups of women from different places in the world: Black women in South Africa; Muslim women from the Middle East; Aboriginal women from Australia and Canada; and lesbian and disabled women from different countries worldwide. It also asks searching questions about colonialism and neo-colonialism in the women's international sport movement. The particular groups of women featured in the book reflect the need to look at specific categories of difference relating to class, culture, disability, ethnicity, race, religion and sexual orientation. In her account, Jennifer Hargreaves reveals how the participation of women in sport across the world is tied to their sense of difference and identity. Based on original research each chapter includes material which relates to significant political and cultural developments. Heroines of Sport will be invaluable reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of sport sociology, and will also be relevant for students working in women's studies and other specialized fields, such as development studies or the politics of Aboriginality, disability, Islam, race and sexuality.

Book Better Left Unsaid

Download or read book Better Left Unsaid written by Nora Gilbert and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Better Left Unsaid is in the unseemly position of defending censorship from the central allegations that are traditionally leveled against it. Taking two genres generally presumed to have been stymied by the censor's knife—the Victorian novel and classical Hollywood film—this book reveals the varied ways in which censorship, for all its blustery self-righteousness, can actually be good for sex, politics, feminism, and art. As much as Victorianism is equated with such cultural impulses as repression and prudery, few scholars have explored the Victorian novel as a "censored" commodity—thanks, in large part, to the indirectness and intangibility of England's literary censorship process. This indirection stands in sharp contrast to the explicit, detailed formality of Hollywood's infamous Production Code of 1930. In comparing these two versions of censorship, Nora Gilbert explores the paradoxical effects of prohibitive practices. Rather than being ruined by censorship, Victorian novels and Hays Code films were stirred and stimulated by the very forces meant to restrain them.
