Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity Unshackled follows the development of Western thought over the last 2,000 years, showing how Christianity has grown up side-by-side with Western philosophy. Great errors have resulted from that entanglement, primarily because Western philosophy has its roots in the ancient Greek worldview. After untangling that mess, Harold R. Eberle rebuilds a Christian worldview, laying biblical truths on the ancient Hebrew foundation. This yields a worldview which is liberating, answers the questions of today's society and stands up against the most fearsome attacks from Christianity's modern opponents.

Book Harnessing Harmony

Download or read book Harnessing Harmony written by Billy Coleman and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the creation of the United States, profound disagreements remained over how to secure the survival of the republic and unite its diverse population. In this pathbreaking account, Billy Coleman uses the history of American music to illuminate the relationship between elite power and the people from the early national period to the Civil War. Based on deep archival research in sources such as music periodicals, songbooks, and manuals for musical instruction, Coleman argues that a particular ideal of musical power provided conservative elites with an attractive road map for producing the harmonious union they desired. He reassesses the logic behind the decision to compose popular patriotic anthems like "The Star-Spangled Banner," reconsiders the purpose of early American campaign songs, and brings to life a host of often forgotten but fascinating musical organizations and individuals. The result is not only a striking interpretation of music in American political life but also a fresh understanding of conflicts that continue to animate American democracy.

Book Memoirs of James Gordon Bennett and His Times

Download or read book Memoirs of James Gordon Bennett and His Times written by Isaac Clarke Pray and published by New York : Stringer & Townsend. This book was released on 1855 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a biography of Bennett, the founder, editor and publisher of the New York Herald. After many failed attempts at starting a newspaper, Bennett began the Herald in May 1835. Bennett was known for a lot of journalism "firsts," including the pay-in-advance policy for advertisers, adding illustrations produced from woodcuts, and, in 1839, being granted the first exclusive interview with a United States President, Martin Van Buren. While the Herald was officially independent in its politics, Bennett endorsed William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, James K. Polk, Franklin Pierce, and John C. Frémont. He supported James Buchanan as tensions rose over slavery and endorsed John C. Breckinridge for the 1860 presidential campaign, then shifted to John Bell. He promoted George B. McClellan in 1864. Bennett favored the Union, although he opposed Abraham Lincoln, he later took the lead to turn the president into a martyr after his assassination. He favored most of Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction proposals. By the time Bennett turned control of the Herald over to his son James Jr. in 1866, it had the highest circulation in America. However, under the younger Bennetts' stewardship, the paper declined, and, after his death, it was merged with the New York Tribune.
